    You're obviously a stunning beauty. But honestly, your passion about veganism is even more beautiful and makes you even more beautiful. It warms my heart to hear someone speak the exact thoughts that I'm having .. I'm alone with this way of thinking in "real life" and it's so nice to be able to connect with other vegans online.

      My family has two cats .. (The cutest and friendliest and prettiest cats ever and I love them SO much). And every time I feed them cat food I'm like yuck .. This is disgusting .. This can't be right for them, this can't be healthy. But I haven't done research on that topic yet .. Also I'm at uni and my parents are not vegan so they don't really think outside of the box .. As I'm already arguing all the time with them about their food choices it'd escalate if I mentioned that they should change the cats food as well .. It's difficult!

    Lucy, I recently came across your Vegan Transitions video which was suggested to me whilst watching something else & have since watched your vegan story, vegan food trials and obviously this one too. I'm so happy to find out that you're now vegan, as I am vegan too (since March) after watching Cowspiracy and many other documentaries & youtube videos on the subject. I have been an avid MIC fan, having watched it from the very beginning and sad to find out that you've left however I'm excited to hear what your plans are and wish you all the luck with them :) You were suggesting the high street brands alot and I really sugggest you watch The True Cost, which sheds light on the big fast fashion industry. It's available on Netflix and is really eye-opening about the damage caused to the environment and the workers involved. Also, I'm raising a little vegan :) x

    As a very strict vegan I think it's so wrong when vegans feed their carnivorous animals on a 100% vegan diet. I think it's really cruel and completely contradictory of the lifestyle we choose. As oxymoronic as 'ethical meat' sounds - I think as long as you're getting your meat from good, organic, free range sources then I think you're doing the best you can.

    • @polychordal

      you don't know anything about my dogs! My male dog actually much prefers his food now he's not eating meat. Before he would often leave it. My vet has said that the food I give them now if far better for them than the commercial rubbish most people feed their dogs. My dogs are happy, healthy, full of energy and content. So before you go claiming anything about other people's dogs you have never set eyes on, perhaps do some research!

    Well done for donating some of the profits from selling your leather stuff to animal charities Lucy, i was going to suggest you do so if you hadn't said that you do. Also i think you have to draw the line with pets and veganism - as you rightly say, they are naturally carnivorous and would hunt meat for survival in the wild. It's not hypocritical, it just is what it is. The only solution would be to not have pets but that's obviously not realistic. Keep doing what you do :)

    I'm so glad you touched on the vegan pet owners debate as not many do so, you are not being a hypocrite feeding your pets what they would eat naturally, it would be unfair to deprive them of meat. As you said, humans can live off a plant based diet but carnivores can't really, dogs can thrive off a mixed diet of vegetables and meats x

    • @Emilymml
      @Emilymml Před 7 lety +2

      I'd suggest speaking to a nutritionist rather than a vet as they don't learn much about nutrition when training to be a vet. A canine nutritionist would give the best advice :) At the end of the day though we are completely different to cats and dogs, dogs are omnivores and cats are true carnivores so there is a very fine line on what is healthy for them. Personally I don't think a vegan diet is healthy for either.

    don't know if u can get it in the uk or not, but look into v-dog food. cats do need meat to survive and be healthy, but dogs are omnivores so with the right balance they can actually be really healthy on a vegan diet. i switched my dog to v-dog not because of me being a vegan but because of how unregulated the dog food industry is--most of the meat (& fish) they put in dog food is crap that's been deemed unfit for human consumption--i.e. rotting or completely devoid of nutritional value. my dog's been vegan for over 6 months now and the vet says she's 100% healthy.

However giving them vegetables is great! Less rice as rice bloats. Dry food is great! Try salmon oil for giving them good fat nutrients and amazing coat! (Research if you don't believe me) however I give it to my dogs I've noticed a difference energy wise and on the outside. Rice can be quite dangerous for dogs! I would recommend cutting the rice out of your dogs diet. Fruit and veg is the best for your dog! Dried dog food can often contain meat in without explicitly saying it does. Dog food can even contain dead cats/dogs as the law/guidelines on dog food is nothing compared to human food. Feed them lot's of fruit and veg if you want them to live a long time. x

    I have two kittens and I feed them both meat. They're rescues and cats' natural diet is meat. In my opinion as long as you're not supporting breeders/mills the animals are already in existence and would be fed meat anyway, so as much as I don't like having meat in my house, it's only supporting the pet-food industry (I never buy meat/fish from the 'human' isle for them).

    I believe dogs are omnivores and can thrive on a vegan diet. the oldest dog in the world in the UK at one stage was a dog who was fed a 100% vegan diet. he lived to be 189 in human years, his name was Bramble! cats i think have no sweet receptors on their tongue and are natural carnivores.

      What, like the enzymes to digest meat and a need for vitamin B12 which is found exclusively in animal products..? Come on, I'm vegan but I'm not buying into the idea that humans are natural herbivores, it's pseudoscience. All our evolutionary ancestors were omnivores so it makes no sense for us to be herbivores. The reason we don't have a lot of the characteristics of an omnivore is that we evolved using tools to kill animals.

    • @Laura-pk2fd
      @Laura-pk2fd Před 7 lety

      Hi Alice, B12 can also be found in fortified cereals, marmite and nutritional yeast. Yes, humans did evolve to be omnivorous but that is not the sole reason behind tool use nor were all of our ancestral species omnivores! The main reason for a diet inclusive of meat was to gain enough calories for expensive tissues to function (in our case the brain), however nowadays it's perfectly possible to be a very healthy vegan/vegetarian given the availability of food :)

    • @Alice-ni1se
      @Alice-ni1se Před 7 lety +1

      Laura I know it's healthy to be vegan, I just don't want fellow vegans going round saying stuff like "we are natural herbivores" because people will think we are silly (more than they already do...) so it will be bad for the movement. I agree with your comment :)

    As someone who has been veggie since the age of 12, I think one of the most upsetting aspects of the meat industry is just how unnecessary it all is. Unless you're going to starve to death, or you have a medical condition that requires you to have meat in your diet, then there isn't any justifiable *need* for animals to die for you. With cats however, meat *is* a necessity - they're obligate carnivores and not only don't process carbs very well, but also need certain proteins to survive. If you don't eat a burger, you'll be fine. If your cat doesn't eat meat, it will have a very poor quality of life, including blindness and heart problems, potentially even death.
    Most meat in pet food *is* actually a byproduct of the human meat industry, unlike fur and leather, and often comes from animal parts that would have been destroyed - but some of it isn't necessarily what you would like your pet to eat (google 'meat and animal derivatives' if you're brave)
    IMO sticking with Lilly's kitchen (and other ethically recognised brands) is the most moral thing you can do for your cat, and I would recommend talking with a vet about whether or not your breed of dog could live healthily on a meat-free diet.

    I think dogs can be healthy on a vegan diet with some supplements but cats have to have meat of some sort or else they will get sick! a youtuber called unnatural vegan did a useful video on the topic 😊

    I don't think you need to get rid of your car, i think thats over the top when we live in this non vegan world!, as animals by products are literally everywhere on modes of transport, such as plane fuel and roads etc.

    Both cats and dogs are meant to eat meat, that's what they've evolved to eat. Even fish isn't necessarily the best if it's all they're getting (in terms of protein). I don't think it would be hypocritical to buy meat for them if you're not going to eat it, as long as it is from the best source where the animal has had a good life, since they're biologically made to eat meat. Whatever you decide will be the best decision you think you could have made I'm sure :)

    Lucy check out Benevo and Ami - they offer amazing vegan organic pet foods. I've been feeding my dog Benevo and my cat Ami food since I got them when they were bubbas and they have always been really healthy and couldn't be happier! Their foods are nutritionally complete and balanced so great for everyday.

    just a side comment, dogs are not carnivores. they are omnivores and can survive and thrive on a vegan diet, however it most definitely takes more effort from the owners point of view. someone as dedicated as you though would have no problem. don't be scared to try the diet, dogs can get the same nutrients from plant sources for sure!

  • @emma4332

    Dogs are actually omnivores so they can thrive off either plants or meat, cats are carnivores and humans are herbivores :) I did a lot of research as I have a dog and wanted the best for them and the other animals too! hope that helps xx

    Hi Lucy, I have 2 cats and I feed them science plan cat food. It's dry and contains meat/fish but on the other hand is good for them. they are carnivores and while they like to come and sniff my vegan food it is not what they are designed to eat so I have to accept it.

    Hellooo :) in a vegetarian trying to become vegan but dogs and cats should not be on a vegetarian or vegan diet, maybe you could find a farm shop that that raises its own chickens organically and kills them themselves that way you no it's had a good life and it hasn't be transported live, that way your animals can still have their natural diet as eating meat for them is natural but it cuts out the cruelty xx

    Iv heard that dogs can actually thrive off a vegan diet, cats on the other hand can't! So might be worth researching into vegan dog food :)
