Pioneer Model VSX-1021-K Stereo Reciever Repair

  • This video details that aspect of troubleshooting that involves systematically eliminating potential sources of trouble until the root cause is determined. In this case, a 2011 Pioneer VSX-1021-K surround sound stereo receiver did not have any power. A unique method of troubleshooting using a temperature probe revealed a single zener diode had shorted out causing the standby switching power supply to go into protection mode and not start up. Hi,
Thanks very much for taking all the time to show how to troubleshoot and solve this amplifier repair. I've got a Pioneer VSX-920 that was given to me. At first it worked for a few days, but now it's totally dead. I pretty sure your video will help me to get my VSX-920 up and running again.

Thank you very much for this detail video. I truly appreciate it. FYI, I'm working on a VSX-522-K model and the funny thing the same zener diode is bad on it, believe it or not, however the PS board is much smaller than the one you are working on this video, (less than 1/2 the size, its very very small Power Board, with very few components). This board has total of 7 diodes and 3 of them are Zener Diodes. and 1 of them on mine is shorted out on both way testing, and its located right next to the relay.Anyway, I thought I share that with you and your viewers for my model. Again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, your video was a HUGE help.

That zener did its job. Its whole purpose in the circuit is to fail in an emergency. Zeners tend to fail by shorting out. That's why that zener has no resistor to limit its current. It acts as a crowbar and protects the rest of the device. At some point there was probably a surge that caused the zener to conduct and immediately overheat and fail, shorting the secondary, causing the current limiter in the chip to activate and shut it down.

Thanks for this video. I have to troubleshoot this amp for network and front USB not powering. Since everything else works, I suspect a power line failure down the board. Lucky I found the repair manual online. Now I have to apply my ohm-meter and weak skills to it.

Your comment just saved me! I saw other people saying that "enter" and "auto surround" fixed it, but that didn't do anything. Thank you! I was using some bigger speakers I don't normally use and turned them up pretty loud and it turned off with no sign of turning on. The fuse inside was fine so obviously I thought I needed to look inside(since everyone else's advice was wrong I thought I had no other choice). But nope. Thank you!
Kuddos to the video too, though. This is an incredibly helpful video for someone who doesn't even know much about hardware.

One of my receiver is the same exact model and it has been in service for 3 years, the features are excellent but sound output is average, bass is not solid, good for movie but not for pure music.
But it still is a very decent receiver just top high-end on sound.
There are some problem with its design, i.e HDMI pass-though works one of 10 time you try, network remote constantly doesn't work well, that explains on this thing, too many feature back in year 2011 was a pioneer but it does has some bugs on this unit.
It is not unusual for this happen if the previous owner plays load PCM signal for a long time to burn the power part

Way to go! That's what I call a proper attitude towards the Hi-Fi equipment. A lot of thinking and effort went into that sweet baby of Pioneer's so it's only logical to appreciate it and put some effort into diagnosing it and trying to repair it. Congratulations on the successful repair. I fix retro computers and other equipment from time to time, so I know what it's like to take care of electronic equipment that is dear to the owner. Greetings from Poland.

So I took mine apart and it looks like I have an issue with the same diode. Does anyone know the part number? According to the video it looks like MTZJ6.2A. I can’t find this as of 3/2018. I do see another part MTZJ6V2SA that may work but looks like it’s back ordered.
Does anyone have a good website or source for these parts?

Hard to believe that a Little shitty 50 cents zener cause the total shutdown of the unit, before that i knew that the problem was the zener I was blaming the switch mode power supply some burn trace at the PCB,so it was a really great idea to hookup the temperatura test on that zener, anyway great job very clean and you did not have to spent in unecessary components, thanks for share

I'm gona take a looksee if you have any more videos like this, I have a pioneer VSX-90TXV receiver that the TV input's don't work, the HDMI or right/red, left/white, video/yellow, plugs. I have my TV connected up to the DVR/VCR1 input to get my sound through my receiver now, but there is no HDMI port for that input..... And I need to replace the power button (it will only turn on and off by the remote). Can you give me any advice or point me in some direction? If I can figure it out I don't even know where to by parts, maybe radio shack, and where did you get your schematics'? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does overheat protection circuit have to be high or low?
I had a flashing hdmi so. I disconnected the power amp board. I tested all the mosfets and transistors but they all tested ok.
I'm ready to replace the board, but with it unplugged I get an "overheat" error and then it powers off. I know that this is because of protection mode.
I seen an article that said to place a 300ohm resistor between the pins of The posistor to bypass the protection, but alas I have 3 wires, namely
    Aso, radi_thermal, and tr_thermal.
I tried the resistor in between the triad in various configs and still get the overheat message.
So I'm wondering if it's normal to be getting an overheat error with the power amp disconnected. The only wire that is plugged in is the only for thermal (a 3 pin with 2 black and a white).
    Any help would be appreciated.

Use an ESR tester to test capacitors in circuit. I had a guy drop off a unit like this with a power-supply problem. I can take out this power-supply board, but I wanted to check the other high-voltage boards, such as the amplifier. I cannot figure out how to remove the top SMD IC board. Big capacitor on power supply are expensive maybe thats why a lot of company using cheap caps for power supply unit, and that is bad decision.
