I'll probably never get into any kind of traditional painting myself since digital painting is just so comfortable... but I do love the rich brush work in oil painting as well as thicker guache painting styles.
Currently the safest way for me to paint is to use the lasso tool, the hard round brush and an airbrush. But that approach absolutely lacks the personality from traditional looking painting styles. Any advice on how to translate a traditional style like oil painting to digital painting? Is it just about having the right brushes and not overblending stuff? Is there a secret magic trick behind transitions in soft edges? It's like, I'm looking at it but I'm too understand the concept behind it.

With the right brushes, sure you can simulate the same workflow. But I think for digital artists it’s just easier to stick with your own workflow and brushes but change brushes for the eraser n smudge for simulation. Then when it’s done, paint over for texture. I have seen workflow like yours with every lasso shape, the gradient is smudged in then edges smudged out for the effect. Rinse n repeat

I love oil painting too. Have you heard about using cooking oil to clean brushes instead of solvent?

Yea I did. Sunflower oil. It works but not as clean.
