The bedroom could've been a cool place to collect in-game achievements by awarding accessories for the room.
Could've been cool to have a board where you could go back and look at the photos you get after every gym and titan pokemon and such... *sigh*

It feels like the bedroom was going to be a decoration simulator thing but then they realized that would melt the wii or whatever it runs on so they had to scrap it and leave a shitty empty room.
But that would take effort from Game Freak
they actually did some level of that in Black and White, you get trophies in your room when you complete certain missions

Probably why everything else has play-dough texture

technically there is a couple fights that (somewhat) scales, but it's just because it's Nemona and she's obviously taking into account how many badges you have by the time you fight her again.
... what she probably ISN'T taking into account is how many Titans and Team Star bases you've ALSO defeated, so there's a nonzero chance you can be overlevelled for her fights too.
Ehh, honestly I don't actually want scaling, but I'm sure the rant will be funny.

You could almost say the professor's stiff animations were on purpose, but EVERYONE moves like a fucking robot so there's no excuse.
It's amazing how they've been moving like robots since the transition to 3D and there's barely been an improvement. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad how they can get away with so much and still break records with every release
@@DuskoolIt's not even that hard to do as games like Pokemon Masters have pretty good character animations - they at least didn't have that weird waving hand hitch Clavell seems to have here which didn't seem to use the basic animations tool for it.
@@Duskool So many games on the switch to boot even years ago show its not that hard to have `good` 3D animation, Xenoblade chronicles, Astral chain, No more heroes and so on just being some good examples i would say in general.
Because i think many would of rather just get a Lets go Eevee/Pikachu `continuation` that would follow the events of Gold/Silver/Crystal`s games with a twist and maybe had the mascot type of mons of generation 2 instead of pikachu & eevee.
Maybe have later entries with pachirisu, Riolu (except it can actually evolve into lucario), munchlax and so on if they kept up with that trend...
Because atleast it would be incredibly easy todo, not need any extremely overly fanciful gimmicks, can be written off as a remake, use very simple texture swap ups for outfit customization, have an ACTUAL pokemon multi-player properly then simply VS battles and thats about it and could easily bring back any previous region gimmicks to reinvigorate the fanbase who loved those mechanics and hate they have to use unofficial materials to play with them again in a new environment.
Anyway i already gave it its fair shake with scarlet/violet after not touching sun/moon/USUM/Lets go/etc. when i got motivated that things were getting better with Legends Arceus, so one can only hope they don`t play yet another game of never showing any actual gameplay footage for Z-A till after they soaked in the anticipation beats and it turns out to be very bland and generic again with maybe 1 or 2 gimmicks that should of been present many years ago and the fanbase still coping are acting like they will be present in later entries...which they didnt really do for legends arceus and scarlet/violet, since even if they were being made around the same time, it wouldn`t of hurt for them to cross compare development with eachother to polish problems out and improve the over all quality...
All the money in the budget went into licensing an Ed Sheeran song, graphic team had to make due.

It was like the cringe of hearing someone starting to sing awoke some super power in me where my reflexes went into overdrive allowing me to find and grab the remote to press the mute button in less than a second! Can't believe that made it into a mainline Pokemon game before proper voice acting (or even voice clips! ...Pikachu and Eevee anime voices don't count.).

21:15 Fun fact about that Eggman scene: The JP version actually has the Eggmans continue arguing as the scene slowly transitions. The english version never recorded lines for that part, so it just has the awkward sound effects and the motions of an argument only.

I mean, most of the routes in the series-especially in the past couple of generations-are basically just glorified hallways
It's like they split a whole map into a hallway region (Galar, and Alola to a degree) to a all-ways region (Paldea, with barely any indoor settings).
I'm just imagining Game Freak employees freaking out as alarms blare and a switch levitates in the air. Electricity arcing off the switch and then the camera is viewing the earth from orbit. Is a little blip visible from the switch exploding.

so we do actually know why the game's performance is so atrocious: some goon somewhere decided that the game should, at all times, render the entire ocean, which is the size of the literal planet and has realistic earth curvature, as well as the ENTIRE SKYBOX, which is THE SIZE OF THE SUN.

Wait, that's the reason? Not to just have it load by chunks like every other open world game? Literally just have the entire map, even places we have no way or no reason to go to, loaded. ... No wonder the game runs like playing Cyberpunk on a 5 year old laptop.

Well, the skybox makes sense right? It's a dome that surrounds the entire world, but it's essentially just a sphere or a dome model with a texture inside that might rotate and have a few extra graphical effects, and since you can see it at nearly any angle that's not down, it's generally easier to load it at all times than to deload it when parts are gonna go out of view, just to load them again

@@TheRogueVocaloid skybox size is not super relevant, it's the texture resolution and polygon count that matters. The entire ocean, however, absolutely. No reason for the entire thing to be rendered at all times
That "Don't bring your pokemon indoors" nonsense is going to color my observations of this entire series going forth...
It is bizzare as there are many examples of past regions where some Pokemon do appear indoors, while also having the school have FREAKING POKEMON INDOORS TOO. 🤣
It really feels like a coded "f you we're not rendering more pokemon than we need to, no you can't have friends following you like from the past games", and then they have the gaul to have tons of pokemon walking around indoors. Some at official positions AT DESKS!
Meanwhile the giant ass Gengar in the back of the class is like "uh... is he telling me to leave?"

The school classes could not be more boring. There is no gameplay. Better idea: field trips. For the art class we should go to Artazon to make art, or Tagtree Thicket and learn about Grafaiai. Instead, every class is just pressing A and answering questions. You can play and finish the entire game without really needing to spend time in classes. Massive waste of time.

I always thought the pokemon games (aside from Coloseum) took place over summer break and all the other months out of the year everyone was going to regular school. Scarlet and Violet are the only one so far to show the player attending a school, despite not really going to any classes regularly or following a daily schedule.
yep. absolutely agreed. i bought violet and was pressured into lumping indigo disc ($$$$) into my purchase which i did, because i like collecting cool pokemon. but after being subjected to the teeth pulling session that is navigating the school in the tutorial with the game's universal pace of near-frozen molasses i got out of there as fast as i possibly could and didn't look back. i haven't touched the school at all after that, i haven't played the game in a few months, and i don't plan on going back to get my money's worth from the dlc because the thought of going back to the academy and slugging through 3 hours of pokemon conversations makes me want to die.
i would much rather come to terms with the fact that i thouroughly wasted 40 bucks instead of experience the riveting gameplay that is press a, wait 2 seconds for the person i'm talking to to turn to me, wait for their text to scroll, pick my dialogue option that does nothing but give me the illusion that i'm playing a game instead of watching a forced cutscene, wait for their animation to finish, wait for the game to process something, wait for the camera to pan, wait for this person to stop explaining something that i already know (yes this area is cool, yes that's a unique pokemon, YES MY SKILLS ARE IMPRESSIVE,), wait for the camera to pan again, wait for that person to finish running away, wait for someone else to walk towards me.
i have fun playing pokemon, but the frustration outweighs the fun at points like this.
also, zooming out from just the game itself for a bit, the classes are sort of useless, aren't they? even new kids who play this game have google at their fingertips now. it's leagues faster to check a wiki or a reddit question thread than it is to travel to the school and take an entire class. i understand it's a terrible idea to have a game where the rules aren't explained in it somewhat, even in a game franchise as popular as pokemon, but come ON, classes are a waste in every regard when it comes to your own time and information efficiency and animation/production resources.

I had a math teacher years ago, and albeit towards the start of a financial focused course, she gave us what seemed to be a pretty basic math problem about how much something would cost. This was all so she could rug pull and be like "Nope, what about sales tax?"
School is why I have trust issues and anxiety over answering the most simple questions...

I wanna point out:
Pokemon Crystal Clear had the open world, gym leaders scale based on badge count thing that this game uses, and originally came out about 7 years ago, IIRC.
And that had 17 teams for 16 gyms.
It's also my favourite Pokémon game!

Actually, I am sure RadicalSoda is just setting this up for a diappointment and jokes later but... this game doesn't have level scaling in its gyms (and Titans and Star bases). Sure, you can technically battle them in any order you want but there is a "correct" intended progression and their levels are set. So if you leave the bug type gym for last, which you totally can, you will fight level 14-15 Pokémon with your team of level 60+.

Crystal clear is also developed by a nutcase, so one point to gamefreak for that at least.

And it was the sign of the end times, for pokemon at least. The very flismy excuse to not have the Battle Frontier in ORAS, that people today don't have attention spans for games because of phones.
The fact that they thought they would need to compete with phones was the wrong thing to take away from the rising popularity of phones. A ton of games are free on phones, meaning you can just start playing it right away and don't have to commit to it. Meanwhile pokemon games cost money and require commitment from the player, they are not competing with games on phones.
ORAS was so good, man. 3D flight world, Pokemon-amiee, infinite safari zone, and hunting shiny pokemon was actually feasible for most players to do. Just hunt the same pokemon using the radar over and over, and eventually it will be shiny. Best endgame until they made shiny pokemon as common as water in SV.
@@Benzinilinguine Emerald, Platinum and HGSS have far better postgames than ORAS. If anything ORAS has one of the most empty postgames in the series.
@@okagron nah fam. Have to disagree. Its about what you want out of the games. For the 3DS era ORAS was goated.
@@Benzinilinguine There's barely anything to do in ORAS postgame. You have an hour long lame story with no substance, a copy and pasted Battle facility from the game right before and catching legendaries that people had already caught a million times. It's about as empty as XY's postgame and that game got criticized for its poor postgame. Plus catching shinies is not even postgame.
Emerald, HGSS and Platinum actually have multiple battle facilities, new areas and activities for the player to engage with. ORAS has a fraction of it and overall feels empty.
And i'll mention Soaring is one of the lamest features in a pokemon game because It's just a much slower Fly. If i want to fast travel to a specific ctiy or towns, Fly is much faster. There is also next to nothing to find in the sky outside of what, like Wingulls? The only other thing are the portals for the legendaries, but those could have easily been actual dungeons on the ground for the player to explore to get to the legendaries. Because instead legendaries are just standing on a small island or a void on the other side of the portal, and that's lame as shit.

I still think the school system was a huge missed opportunity for this game. I’m not asking for…. Persona Calendar System, but I wish they implemented the school in more clever ways. Like joining clubs to fulfill tasks and even discover new locations, take supplemental lessons to improve battle strategies, make it feel like the setting is a hub to make it more sense to the growth of our character and region.
But nooooo….. it just had to be Tutorial Hell.
The school would have been perfect as a hub to do things like EV training and grinding items for IVs and have battle points for other items!
Imagine if the start of the game is just you excelling at being a trainer and because you excel they give you special permission to do the gym challenge and you can accept to do it or not
Or better yet, imagine if the game is just you in school dealing with team star and all that stuff, and the gun challenge takes place as endgame content because you were the one to stop the team and save the world
Wish they'd made the Tera Orb something you earned by attending Battle class and winning a tournament or something.
thats so unsanitary, just imagine youre out and about having a nice picnic with your pokemon and your female incineroar squeezes out a steaming 25 inch egg and plops it in the same place you store food. Like its still moist and everything.

I absolutely LOVE the way you're handling this review, as someone that played the game you're building up so much anticipation for the "big reveals" (aka the most baffling problems).

The way he kept harping on and on about how open the world is makes me believe he already is painfully aware, like some sort of cosmic foreshadowing
The worst part of Koraidon curling it's tail up like that just to have it look like a wheel is it doesn't even use it to jump.
Like that would've been a much better justification for curling the tail instead of just "we need it to look like a wheel so Koraidon can resemble a bike".
And that's why I'd always choose Violet version.

As someone who has had a college dorm, seeing pokemon give players THAT 18:33 is astounding. Not only is it HUGE and a one-person dorm, but it has a private bath, a KITCHEN and a bed with sheets AND a pillow? That's a friggin 5 star hotel room.
I'm gonna be honest: seeing Pokémon going through this downward spiral depresses me. I used to love Pokémon.

Most of the 3D era stuff is kind of sad imo. Not all of it, but a good chunk.
I only finished pokemon X and Pokemon Sun / Ultramoon of the 3d era. I got pokemon Sword now, after like.. five years after release or something, and I played it for a bit. I'm not hooked at all. The world feels empty, and it's like nobody is playing this game anymore (referring to wonder trades and the dynamax battles I had to do with npc's). It's just sad.
Same, pokemon used to be magical, but now it's just so compromised for maximum profit. Gen 9 was the first I skipped.

@@jemm113 oh they clearly can, notice how snappy Gen 5 engine was compared to gen4's, the issue is that the higher-ups cut corners and rush development that no dev has the time to improve the engine
I think it also has to do that none of them are skilled at programming 3D games... 2D games and Pokemon in particular were 2D specialist type deals

So I've never actually seen this much footage of the school segments, most videos gloss over them (for good reason). Are you really telling me that it takes THAT LONG to load such small scenes, and even then, they bug the fuck out like that?! I also like how they couldn't bother toggling off the lower-quality distant animation setting for the classroom cutscenes, making everyone look so choppy, along with how it seems to measure from the player character, and not the camera.
@trainershade1937 He does review games without any patches at all to be fair but even nowadays it is still really buggy post fixes and dlc. The framerate especially was never fixed completely
Hearing RadicalSoda bring up Forces in a situation where literally nobody would mention Forces feels like listening to somebody talk about a slightly traumatic experience that they just refuse to move on from. Soda the crash was four years ago, it wasn't your fault you can move on. Let go of your pain.
This game is about as charming as it is facepalm inducing. Stuff like Tyme being cheeky with the Premier Ball is balanced out with this game constantly reminding you of the glued together rushjob it really was.

These games really are just barely playable, which makes me sad because I'd love a properly made, fully fleshed out modern pokemon game. It really does boggle the mind that highest grossing franchises keeps making these absolute dumpsterfires AND keeps making money from them. Hopefully they make good games before spiraling into oblivion, assuming that will ever happen.

Because the main audience are easily having fun in the formula while GF is taking the minimum effort route...it's like if Mario games are always New Super Mario Bros games now because of how good they sell without much new innovation that is being introduced IMO.
I just did some digging, and I thought I would post this here. Pokemon's black characters have had controversy, but the one I remember was regarding Lenora. But it wasn't people screaming, "Eeek, a black woman in my game!" It was the usual suspects screaming that she was a racist, stereotypical depiction of a black woman. From an article.
"This character is called Lenora, and she is the gym leader for Nacrene City. However, her initial artwork sparked controversy as her big hair, bright lips, bandanna hair tie, and pink apron made many people uncomfortable. Many fans said Lenora resembled the "Mammy" archetype, an offensive stereotype of African-American women based on outdated slavery-era depictions that showed them as happily enslaved housekeepers and domestic servants. Because of fan outcry, Lenora's design was changed to make her resemble this stereotype less. In later art promoting the game, Lenora was no longer wearing the apron. Instead, she was shown carrying the apron over her shoulder like a cape."

The Gym Leader of Nacrene City in Pokémon Black and White, Lenora, also brought up concerns of racism. Lenora's original artwork, as well as her in-game sprites, depict her wearing a large apron. Concerns arose that people outside of Japan would allude Lenora to the Mammy stereotype. Similar to Lenora, the mammy is often depicted as a dark-skinned woman who wears a handkerchief on her head and an apron. Because of the similarity, Lenora's artwork was changed, from her wearing the apron to her having it slung over her shoulder like a cape. Despite this, Lenora's in-game sprites were not altered in the international releases of Pokémon Black and White or Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.
This would have been back in 2010, which is around the time a lot of this bad-faith, look-to-be-offended culture started to seep into the broader culture.
Ironic since Lenora is a million times better than Tyme.

I like that this series isn't truly hating on pokemon. It's more like, watching a children's sports game, so much is going wrong and you just know that they could do better if they actually put in a little effort so all you can do is encourge them with rage behind a lot of it

@@deazee2288 nah I like the battle systems Pokemon had to offer tbh. Both games have different battle styles and the Persona style and gameplay look is nothing like Pokemon. But persona games have wayy higher quality. The Pokemon Company should start giving gamefreak more time and gamefreak should get more employees. They are wringing themselves dry and this is the product.
Persona & Hogwarts Legacy are basically the only games that do school settings well.
It's forced in just about every other game I've played. I haven't played Bully though and I think it would obviously work there.
I remember someone saying it works in Persona because each half of the game would tire you out had they been isolated but the back and forth makes it the most overt "More than the sum of its parts" deal
Pokemon already had it's own form of that, catching wild animals vs the actual trainer shit so the school is like, not needed

I will say I didn't mind that ORAS didn't had the Battle Frontier but I get why it was a big deal, but it is true Ohmori's era except ORAS are clunkers and always makes me worried when he's a director of a game (which it has been in every new gen game recent times).

The frontier coming soon sign didnt make me despair at first, I legit thought it was something they were going to add a DLC/update down the line for because they literally didnt have enough time to finish it before release. I would have been fine with that if we got it a year later. But then they completely skipped Pokemon Z or anything else that could have been done with gen 6 and went straight to the absolute slop that is Alola.
Psyduck is not available in every mainline Pokemon game actually. Yes you can get obtain it in games such as Black and White and Sword and shield, but not by any means other than breeding or trading to said game.
However, as a knowledge bomb, Magikarp is technically the only Pokemon to appear in every single Pokemon game. Even in Pokemon Black and White, unlike Psyduck, you can obtain a singular Magikarp by a person selling it; a call back to the original games of buying one.
I think the term "available" is used when it is programmed in. "Catchable" may be the better term of what you're saying, but frankly this convo is moot as Pokemon always depended on other versions to complete even a regional Pokedex.
I know the sequels to BW aren't the same game, they did end up including Psyduck in Floccesy Ranch in B2W2. Psyduck was not in base SwSh, but was included in the first wave of DLC, in which you could still obtain the Pokémon without buying the DLC itself

It is..horrifically depressing how GOOD this game could have been. I honestly enjoyed the characters, the story, and a decent amount of the new Pokémon more than I have in several years at this point. The game was just horribly unoptimized. They even fixed the lifeless looking 3D models and added texture! It's a shame

Also, I'm totally in the same boat about Cyclizar. It feels a bit weird to be riding around on a Legendary Pokemon when everyone else just has a Cyclizar. I wish they gave us the ability to ride Korai/Miraidon a bit later and just gave us a Cyclizar to ride around on at first. I prefer it's "plainer" appearance when riding around tbh. Then when you DO get to ride on Korai/Miraidon, you could swap between the two if you prefer riding on one or the other.

"No politics in games" means to not put our world's issues into a game's world when the plot, setting, etc doesn't call for it. The reason for the unnecessary inclusion becomes all to clear, like a Catholic nun beating on a student for sucking their finger in class to relieve the pain she had just suffered from said nun, and the immersion is replaced with annoyance. There is also the possibility that the focus on political messaging takes away from everything this and other games sorely need focus on, like quality control.
I thini MY favorite thing about Pokemon is the consistent commitment to quality, and the fans, who keep that in mind and don't make excuses and tell you to kill yoursel-

Bioshock is a great game all about politics, however, if a character ever went "rapture wouldn't have gone to shit under female leadership hurhur" that would be forced politics and really annoying.
