I have learned more from Prof. Vaknin than anywhere else. He is one of the few persons out there who are intellectually challenging and inspiring to me. He has brought clarity into my own life and has deeply affected my work. The good thing is that he not only has an extensive knowledge but also the capability to connect psychology to real life. Not all his videos are outstanding but most of them are and go beyond anything that you can learn somewhere else.

EGO distinguishes between “self” and “non self”

I learned something very good from Prof. I learned: externalization😮. But it really helped me. example: when I met a person, he became important to me, whether he was a friend, a boss, a partner. So I got too involved in these relationships that it was bad for myself. now I say to myself: this is external, outside. And it's actually easier for me to deal with mean people.

Greetings Dr. Vaknin, not sure if you'll read this but I want to think out loud and hopefully be guided in the right direction.
Jordan Peterson often refers to 'The Equilibriated State' from his Personality Lectures. The basic claim is this, a functional and moral ego integrates everything and everyone. You must act in a way that is good for you today, next week, next month, next year, and decades into the future. However, this must done in such a way that it incorporates your spouse, kids, family and friends, co-workers, community and country - in such a way that it is good for the collective today, next week, next month, next and next decade. The problem with this is what you say: "people are like the river, we can never step into the same water twice". Moreover, people's values and instincts often conflict with one another, especially when they are unconscious. They can be hypocritical for instance. Project their own dissonance onto others, etc. This makes Petersons' moral imperative difficult, for me personally, there is a lot of shame, guilt, resentment and cynicism associated with this endeavor.
Granted! - to avoid strawmanning Peterson - he has moral prescriptions to serve as antidotes to this inevitability. 'Make friends with people who want the best for you' which is quite synonymous with your video titled 'stay away from amoral and immoral people'. Peterson prescribes us to 'tell the truth or at least don't lie' which is serves to keep our reality testing intact. 'Set your house in order before you criticise the world' this is to temper the gradiosity of the ego, which sets too high-a-goal that it sets one up for failure and thus lead to shame, guilt, resentment, etc - put simply "the bad object " as I have come to learn from your work. 'Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient' this is to temper instant gratification - or as I've learned from you: keep the secondary psychopath at bay.
My question here is: moral and behavioral prescriptions seem rational and doable, but how does one make them intuitive when gripped by the strong emotions of the moment? Are we condemned by our instincts to a wretched fate? What are the limitations of moral teachings and psychological insights? Is Peterson's "Equilibrated State" a good conceptual model to start integrating one's Self in a pro-social way - if not, why not? How does your philosophy and praxis of Nothingness differ, compensate for, complement or outright reject and replace "The Equilibriated State" as acted out in the real world?
Please feel free to dissect this response as you see fit. Like I said, I'm just thinking out loud. I'm a huge fan of your work. Keep doing what you're doing. You are a light in this work.
P.S: I know you hate being compared to Peterson. I've watched that video too. This is not the intention of this comment. I am not looking for a duel of CZcams Intellectuals. This is simply and sincerely a moral, practical and philosophical enquiry. I would sincerely appreciate your response.

Search this channel and my main channel for "moral". As an aside: prosocial, communal narcissists can be extremely moral. It doesn't make them less dangerous to themselves and to others.

Oh, and I wanted to say that most of these ego haters are hypocrites. maybe Buddhist monks actually practice something like this, but for me the monastery itself and the rules within it are related to ego. Besides, all the rules of coexistence between people are aimed at ensuring that people do not spend their energy on shooting at each other and playing games with each other, but on constructive ego-action

Ram Dass told a story about a spiritual young man seeking enlightenment who goes to the guru at the top of the mountain. The guru gives him two potatoes and tells him to go to the lake, make his peace, eat the two potatoes, and report back. A hungry old woman sees him eat the first potato and pleads him to give her the second one as the first is all he needs as she is ever so hungry. He gives her the second potato. When he returns to the guru , the guru runs up to him and yells "You fool!! Why didn't you eat the second potato??" and the guru banished him. He went on to live a very respectable life. He found a beautiful wife, had three kids who prospered well. That's the end of the story. And that was from the first potato.....Is true enlightenment and loss of ego taking on a life where you live entirely selfishly? Does this sound a bit like narcissism?🤔

I'm very interested in those narratives that lead to personality disorders how could they play the role of the ego ??

Would you say that certain Buddism is similar to Gnosticism? In that both seem to be narcissistic pathologies which seek to internalise any external 'good object' to the point where the ego is dissolved/obsolete. The Shadow is projected wholly onto external, material reality. Then what is the 'demiurge'? Could it represent the formation of the ego before, or at, the event of psychological splitting?
