    If you are curious about Neil’s motorcycle travels, he wrote several books about them. “Ghost Rider” is quite deep, as he was dealing with the tragic losses of both his daughter and his wife a year later. Neil jumped on his bike and road over 55,000 miles to “heal” and search for a reason to live. It’s a great “how to” book for anyone who has endured a personal tragedy in their lives and it provides both hope and inspiration. Neil left us with a tremendous amount of his personal wisdom in his books and I would recommend any one of them wholeheartedly.

    On being a 3 piece I have heard interviews where when asked about adding another member they said either of 2 things, firstly it could spoil the synergy they have and secondly (and my favourite reason) "I think the fans like to see us struggle"😂
    It is true as a life long fan I would hear the new album back in the day and wonder how in the name of god will they manage THAT live? They always did. Amazing musicians and just 3 very nice people who loved each other and loved making music.

    J.S. Bach to Geddy Lee..."Hold my beer". Not sure how many get that but for those not in the know, Bach played the organ with BOTH hands and feet hundreds of years ago. He had a set of pedals at his feet that were a keyboard. There are still many out there today who can do this. With that said, Geddy, Alex, and Neil are by far the most talented set of musicians because they would do it live, night after night, after night around the world. I appreciate how you appreciate these gentlemen. It is nice to see there are still those out there who can appreciate music.

    This is not meant as any challenge to Rush because well, you already know. A band that formed about a year after Rush (1969) in England and made a huge impact early was Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They are also a progressive rock group that were coined as a "Supergroup" at the time. They have a great catalogue and for a start maybe you would enjoy "Lucky Man". "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "From the Beginning". These gentlemen had an incredible pedigree before they joined ranks and I think you will enjoy their special talent.

    • @markstromberg1148
      @markstromberg1148 Před 2 lety +4

      I agree that if there was a 3 piece contender to Rush's crown, it would be ELP. They were great musicians (particularly Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer) and provided a very full-sounding experience. HOWEVER, I have to say that the quality of the prog rock ELP created was, for me at least, less thematic, less melodic, and more convoluted, than that of Rush. After much reflection, what has stood out for me is the quality of Rush's compositions, most particularly what they were creating in a six album stretch from "2112," "A Farewell to Kings," "Hemispheres," "Permanent Waves," "Moving Pictures," and (though some might disagree) "Signals." Never before or since has there been an outpouring of such creative compositional genius in rock music. And I say that as a fan of some of the prog greats, including Genesis, Yes, Kansas, ELP, and Jethro Tull.

      @@markstromberg1148 I agree with most of your points and appreciate your comments very much. I think that Rush was a very accessible prog group and that is meant as a compliment. They really did create memorable melodic music and for that I think that makes their music timeless in many ways. Of course this began for me as a commentary of other 3 member bands that made great or moreover epic music and Rush really fills the bill. I confess that I have seen some legendary bands from the 60's like Cream and Jimi Hendrix Experience (both in 1968) and although amazing and filled with their own greatness they certainly weren't prog groups and not the least bit complicated. With the bands you mentioned above it is a very good example of some early prog music, interestingly often British that were of course bands with more members. I think that many would agree that Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin were very much in the Prog world but of course for me, those elements aren't the first thing I think about when I consider their sound. Over the last 25 years for my personal consumption I have probably been to see Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree (Steve Wilson), The Flower Kings, Marillion, Haken, Thank You Scientists more than any other groups. There sure is a lot of great music past and present. Thanks for the reply, cheers!

      ELP in studio could rival Rush as a 3 piece band but if you watch any of ELP's live performances they just could not do what these 3 guys could do, ELP's live stuff you'll find to be sloppy one reason I believe is Geddy, Alex, and Neil were always stone cold sober unlike most Rock bands, example is Zeppelin Bozo is right up there with Neil but he could hardly sit on his stool as he was wasted most of the time, which of course is what lead to his early demise

Neil has written a number of books as well. One I have read is Far and Away which he writes about his motorcycle adventures amongst other things. Yep, he's playin' it with his feet. I've seen footage of him where he's hammering-on/pulling-off on the neck of his bass, stomping pedals, and doing something on the keyboard with his right hand while belting out the vocals. All three of them individually are 4-star premium musicians - in spades. Neil with the MalletKat and the rest of the triggers he can beat on back there, never mind the actual drumkit itself - has a "backing band" of his own if he wants it, you've seen what Geddy can do, and Alex just keeps giving it his everything on the guitars and guitar-like instruments, and though it isn't usually visible, he's got a bank of effects buttons, AND a pedal-board like you saw Geddy running that he uses in the appropriate places. Put 'em all together, and you've got one helluva band. RIP Neil.

    One of the things I’ve always loved about Rush is that the bass was always right up front in the music. They didn’t bury it in the background like so many other bands did. But maybe that was a function of the bass player being the lead singer. No matter, I’m just glad they did it that way. One of the really cool things about this song is how it seems so almost like an orchestral piece with the different movements as it goes along.

The sex and drugs weren't what they were interested in (OK, SOME DRUG related shennanigans may have happened!!!). That's why they were soooooo f-ing good (no Kiss or Motley Crew here). This was their profession and more importantly, their passion, and that's exactly how they approched their career and every show they ever played. Small venue, big venue, for them it was about delivering the best performance they could. I went to see them every tour from 1980 until the end. With the exeption of one show I went to, they were absolutely phenomanol. They strived to be the best they could be. When I first heard it in 1978 I had a spiritual experience. The best live version is R40 in Cleveland. Hope you do this one next. Cheers!

    Before the motorcycle, Neil would be dropped off 200 miles from the arena they were going to play at and cycle on a bike to the gig. He also visted all the major musems in the country as well as the small ones. He rode bikes across Africa and China. You can read about it in his book "The Masked Rider"

    Neil Pier lost his daughter and his wife within around a year and he took off and road to Northwest British Columbia all the way down the West Coast Oregon California down to Mexico Central America into Southern America and then back up to Canada , over 50,000 miles on just that trip alone and he said it was soothing for his soul being in motion riding like a when they're upset you're trying to get them relax and go to sleep you taking for a ride in the car because the motion soothes the soul.

Hearing this song for the first time when it was new was just a mind blowing experience. As much as I enjoyed 2112 (that was the first tour I saw them live) Farewell to Kings just brought so much power and presence to the music. They are by far my favorite band of all time and the best live shows I've seen.

    I don't know if the motorcycle story is true, but I don't doubt it. He wouldn't have to worry about having to drive in winter. In Canada, the winter is slow for touring and most of the stadiums are busy at that time of year with hockey. Rush would use the winter to write songs and record. If touring is going to happen in winter, bands use that as their time to play the southern hemisphere, since it would be summer there.

    I don't think you will find a three MAN band with a fuller sound and you'd be hard pressed to find a band tighter musically than they are. they're all focused , they're all in time, they are all on point, always !!! I've seen them live several times and I never seen one of them out of sync, off tempo, out of time, nothing !! they're the fullest three man band ever and they are also the tightest band period, I've ever heard.
