Great video, can you clarify what's wrong with the statement: nightmode does lower the peek (this is easy to see with any visualisation) and as you state more compressed.
So if the HIFI is comfortable at 90% in game volume
And nightmode is comfortable at 100%
Your quiet sounds would be slightly louder on baseline
I'm unsure what your experience is in game, I dont doubt your audio abilities but there is a noticeable difference in loud nightmode and loud hifi, in terms of how uncomfortable hifi gets with explosions and shots -
I also dont believe your tests were accurate with the tinnitus, as they is run of a timer only (it's a hard cutoff)
The man himself
I think (I am not experienced on this so I am possibly wrong) what is wrong with the statement is that rather than it making sounds quieter in general night mode makes sounds further away louder and closer quieter (opposite with HiFi) it lowers or uppers the baseline while those loud/quiet sounds are happening rather than being a constant lowering/uppering
What would you recommend? From what I’ve heard hi-fi makes louder sounds (explosions and gunshots) louder while night mode makes it easier to hear foot steps I was just wondering if this was true. Also I love your content I found your channel a few weeks ago and you’re so entertaining to watch.
As much as finer details are really good to have for bettering gameplay, you gotta take into account that most problems we face atm in siege is due to 2 things:
1.game in unreliable with consistency of sounds it makes i.e. Out of 20 simultaneous sound, it can't prioritise them in given situations. Not to mention blatant removal of vital sounds.
2. The binary audio technique (which i hope it is) they used for sound engine is absolutely trash, no other way to put it.
So in order for these finer details matter in game, we need a rework, not an overhaul, of the sound engine.
I'm using nightmode like @zironicdk teach me :) . I'm waiting for the Tall guy responds.. Nice Video btw
Honestly just use whatever, you won’t be able to hear anything over your friends screaming in the mic anyways
Good point 😆

Just pick any option. The sound is going to be bugged anyway.
It's perfectly normal for me try buying a headphone edit : seems like I triggered some folks I played this game for 3 years and I never had a sound issue until now. Sounds were still confusing sometime ago but that was caused by bouncing and made some sense but ever since I got back in siege sound were so so fucky and had nothing to do with bounce at least Ubisoft addressed the issue and patch is coming this week.
lmao I feel that statement on a personal level
Someone got ash rushed 5 seconds into the round
Bro when are they going to fix that sound glitch
@@BluWGhosT no it's true. Played this game for over 4 years and the sound is completely fucked

Same hahahaha
Clash be like: UNLIMITED POWAAAAA
None of these matter when you hear an enemy below you when they are actualy above you
thats literally the worst. i dont get how ppl distinguish the two.
This problem will be fixed on PS5 and Xbox Series X
Sound will always take the quickest route to you. Make small holes so it goes through the holes. Will give an obvious sound instead of a loud thunk.
@@swainstormh Well, not when you are on the stairs. Sound coming from upstairs bounces off the floor below you for some reason.
That's why i don't like playing vertically, it's impossible to tell where the sounds are coming from
What I learned from this video:
1)Use Hi-fi
No, its night mode. He even said that at the end. "Night mode is oftenly the most right option"
U trolling right

This is a really dope video. Gives some real solid info on how each setting works. Good job CZcams recommended.
Rogue-9 said something wrong? The end times really are upon us...
I thought the exact same
I don't think there's anyone wrong here tbh
well his tests only consisted of how loud/quiet the sounds were, not based on where the enemies were, so hes correct on the fact that it makes it easier to hear but not as good to locate people
Thank you so much for making this video, i've been looking for someone to explain this properly for so long!
Thank you for clarifying how the sound settings really work. Great video keep it up !
Very interesting, thank you for posting this. The background audio track I found a bit obnoxious, I was trying to hear the subtle differences between the audio modes and the track playing overtop was distracting. But the graphs were great illustrations.
When I started using Nightmode, I stopped being able to actually locate enemies accurately based on sound. Thank you for this.
I’m just gonna
If you are anything like me, you searched out ANYTHING on sound for R6s. EVERYONE was of the opinion that NM was the best setting. I will use HiFi simply because an audio engineer has made a vastly better explanation that I can at least appreciate.
@@gregroberge5035 you gotta appreciate people of experience and knowledge who actually explain why certain setting can have a certain drawback. I knew that Hi-Fi had a larger range; intuitively I thought that making quieter sounds louder and loud sounds quieter would help me with how perceive enemies based on sound. This video explained that while that could be true in a sense of hearing quiet sounds better, it can also throw your perception off. I believe whoever plays on Nightmode can do a lot better on Hi-Fi, they just need to try it and pay close attention to the difference it makes.
Same I thought it was my headphones
@@EliasReda Night Mode gives you a distinct tactical advantage (I say this as game Sound Designer) because it has reduced dynamic range BUT at first it may cause you to think enemies are closer than what you're used to.
Expectations : Ok im gonna use Hi-fi and play like pro

Whats a sound bug?
fatson sometimes it’ll sound like someone’s to the right but in reality they’re directly behind you

Not really. Thats just 'normal' siege sound. Sound bug is when they make no noise at all.
I like how real tinnitus takes forever to recover from but in video games it's just a couple seconds
I feel bad for laughing at this.
this was a really cool video, i feel like i actually learned something it was very interesting keep up the good work

thank you for this video man you are very informative!
holy shit I just found this gem of a video of why I can always hear more stuff with hi-fi than my friends who use nightmode, thank you for the video
Kinda wish this was tested with footstep instead of the airjab but hey, this opened up more insight. Thanks!
I used the airjab because it's easier to visually identify in a spectrogram, but everything should more or less translate to footstep sounds.
@@AlteraSound any plans for an episode 2? More tests, especially some focused on footsteps would be great. Footsteps heard through reinforcements, a floor above/below, from different operator armor levels, etc.
By far the primary focus for changing sound settings in siege is for better locating enemies, not range, crispness, etc. The youtubers' logic may have been flawed, but did night mode accomplish the goal anyways?
Please test it with footsteps:)
Amazing video. Thank you for the info.
Amazing breakdown
This was actually very helpful

Your point at minute @6:44 reminded me of the time I discovered I could listen to high quality flac tracks for a longer period of time and at a higher volume compared to regular 320kbps tracks. The loudness war continues.
finally ,ive been trying to prove that hifi sound ok to me rather than night mode but all these vids kinda forced me to use nightmode, i get called hacker a lot more now due to my good reaction and better sound cue intel ,thanks

Great video, sir
Great video!
Interesting test and great video.
A few opinions:
Regarding HiFi, as you said it yourself, HiFi is more of a "sound in your face" type. Don't you think, especially while shooting your gun, having a loud noise distracts you from e.g. aiming? From this, TV might be the best of both worlds?
A different approach could be using an equalizer to turn foot steps louder, right? What's your opinion on that?
I think that's where it comes down to personal preference. Personally I'm not distracted by loud sounds, but someone who is might prefer TV or even Night Mode. I've heard most pros use TV mode.
As for using an EQ, it's not really a practical solution for Siege. Most sounds, with a few exceptions like the Airjab, cover the whole frequency spectrum. Footsteps are slightly bass-heavier, but so is gunfire, so you're turning that up too by using an EQ.
@@AlteraSound Thank you!
Thank you this is amazing
Thanks for the video!
Great video! Thanks!
good work, please do more sound tests of R6 and point out bugs/errors and how to "read" them, thank you!
Going from long term hifi use to night mode, the immediate difference was that gun fire sounds were reduced which seemed to make footsteps and other relatively quieter sounds standout more, and this allowed me to be more comfortable raising the master volume to hear those sounds even louder.
It was odd and I didn't like it at first as it felt unnatural but I stuck with it and I've gotten used to it. It does seem like I'll miss out on certain sound cues more often now, such as broken barricades, etc. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's due to bugs.
Thanks for the audio breakdown. I'll have to give hifi another go for a better comparison.
Can you comment or make a video on if there's any difference between sounds on floors above and below you?
Ho2 is the change are you still on nightmode?
U changed!
I feel the same way… I’m not really sold on this videos advice. I’m not trying to hear the whole dynamic range of a footstep… I just need a directional sound queue
The only sounds that bother me are reinforcements and breach charges. They’re ear busters
Then pick night mode it suposedly makes noises like that more balanced with the rest so lower
Honestly that's a good point, why do reinforcements have to be so frickin loud lol
So fooking loud
Drones too 🤮
LMG MOUNTED, AND LOADED
I know this is two months after this was uploaded but do you think you could test the affect of the 20 health or less part of them game and how long it takes to recover? Loved the video by the way :)
If you hear a step mostly depends on your headphones and wether they stink or not.
The differences are minimal and the reduced duration of the tinnitus effect probably is the biggest advantage any mode can give.
Problem in Siege currently is that the direction a sound is played from doesnt always match with what its produced at. So an enemy which you can clearly hear stepping and even shooting to your right will often be hard left in Sieges current state. I remember the time when this wasnt the case but Ubisoft somehow broke it and still didnt fix it yet.
Thank u from South Korea. I've been using Night Mode on XB PS4 and PC R6 for years due to the CZcams I watched (exactly the example one you showed in your video). I've been questioning how come default sound mode (HiFi) has a disadvantage. Now I am going back to HiFi :) I am using Astro A50, I am not sure which preset is closest to the original game sound source if you happened to know... lol
Great video, now I just need you to tell me the best settings for my G6 Sound Blaster
Something I would love to see you do is analyse rainbow six siege audioprofile and find out what frequency range would be the most beneficial to boost in your EQ to hear footsteps over ambient and possible other background noises. Also flipping out your phone/drone camera feed, reloads, C4 rips etc. Thank you for great content, subbed and liked.
This
Aw man...! thank u so much :)))
someone finally did it with a logical explain
please upload more siege content. you are pretty good and i love a mute main lmao.
I was hoping you would discuss R6's sound production more indepth as I think it is deserving to go even deeper. Graet video and just some thoughts as I feel this is a side of the production that doesn't get the kudos they deserve. At least from my stand point as a lifelong musician and someone who'd done audio work professionally in music and video production setting. I actually give the sound guys and gals a lot of props wonder if they are creating Impulese Responses for the maps. I could see them modeling it pretty easy nowadays but still to be able to process and handle all of that performance bandwith that it would need is amazing.
Night Mode I think is mainly masking and shaping. I feel the fact levels are pretty even between TV and NM shows that i they are just using the usual tricks to get more bang for their buch.
Essentially it is much more than just extremely good audio proessing going on in the background of an already ectremely intense time dependent and complex game. Which is amazing in iitself considering the live game runs multiple IR responses in realtime where they te influenced by destruction to surroundings and position of character and objects in between The fact they can do this and it run as good as it does is just amazing. The Rougue 9 video was good but he was not taking into affect things that a sound person would.. Such as floor and cieiling counting as reflection points, or that a sound in certain enclosuers are forced to terminate before completion of wave cycle and the resulling audio distortions always make the source appear louder.
I think the thing about Night Mode no one has discussed is that it is using techniques to artificially get the result of making the audio less jarring. The main thing is sound masking more than compressor and limiters ( I believe they both have multiband subd compression in channel TV and Night Mode) but since It's a feature that is aimed at being able to play in close proximity without waking or disturbing ppl then this is the toolbox to go . I would guess that the compression and limiting is the diffence from hi-fi to Tv/night mode and that after this they are adding subtle masking and probably a host of other tricks to make it seem lower than it actually is, cut down on the distance the sound travels particularly noises that pique human concious like bombs, dogs barking, etc which could wake parents. It looked like you chould see a bit of this in your spectogrpaphy, and the other measurements indicate that this is as well. At this point they can just add in some dithering with noise shapping and some phase, offest, and binaarual techniques and tools to maintain the ability to play competitively while also allowing volume to be less disturbing.
Anyways. thanks for video and may dig into this now that I have so much more free time.
After 1500 hours, this is the best overall explanation I’ve heard, sound is still bugged and shit tho
Cant do nun bout the game being ass
Nice vid, night mode does lower the volume technically, but night mode is the only setting which can help u discern if an enemy is coming from your right or your left
i use 'tv' with open back headphones. I used night mode but i keep getting inverted sound but i think thats a bug rn, might revisit night mode later
I was getting the same bug that's why i started using hi fi
I got that using both settings i think its a game bug
I constantly get that bug (I use hifi)
Just classic Ubisoft, making dog shit games
Awesome video, great explanations and perfect in game examples. Any recommendation for headsets? I found this game much more complicated regarding understanding where the sounds comes from than before, maybe they’ve changed how the audio works or the age comes into effect 😂(haven’t played for 4 years).
i would love to see you configurate an equalisation for better hearing, for instance using Equaliser APO and Peace.
thanks for the video, maybe it is just me speculating but since a friend told me to play with nightmode, i've had the impression of having a harder time to know where the opponent is comming from etc, maybe that is the reason why.
A year late, but cool video! Will try out HiFi mode today.
I love the clips from other videos lmao
Oof, he’s really gonna do my boy Rogue-9 like that?
I only jest, of course. Very much appreciate the breakdown! As a console player, i never liked night mode and have always stuck to tv, but it seems i might just have to give hi-fi another chance.
I'm a big fan of Rogue 9, it was just a little frustrating to see him sharing slightly misleading info 😛
i think nightmode is still the best option bc it makes the loud noises quieter and allows you therefore to turn your volume up, meaning louder footsteps.
this gameplay is so good
5:40 conclusion
thanks
Your vid needs to get viral in the siege community man. Hey, whats your opinion on the 7.1 razer surround sound? Got a razer headset but the surround sound makes difficult to hear footsteps in r6.
The virtual surround stuff is very interesting. I'll probably make a dedicated video on the topic, but in my experience it's not very useful in Siege.
I experience a beeping in my right ear, kind of like tinnitus but I know I don't have it because it's only a thing that occurs when I play siege. I'm about to test out Hi-Fi now and see if it works! thanks for the help :)
This guy is a legend
Thank you so much
Thanks man, keep going, nice content btw
Definitely more Rainbow 6 Siege videos. What I would like to see is a video done with you and Rouge 9 on something like, the effects of destruction and sound in Siege. Maybe with some tips and tricks on certain spots that you can use to your advantage
This is really cool still kind of confusing, but I have a much better understanding of the setting now. I love Rogur-9 but I think you are much better qualified to comment on this subject. Also, I love Creep by Radiohead so that was cool that you threw that reference in there.
Finally someone who’s knows what they are talking about I have a Logitech headset so I can use the g hub to lower the sound of louder queues and raise the sound of lower audio queues
If only you made Astro EQ settings for these games.. amazing content though!

@@bubbagump_shrimp I watched the whole video and I'm pointing out that with nightmode i hear better even if he says hifi is better, I have alot of siege experience and with hifi the explosions are louder same with gunshots well if you switch to nightmode the gunshots and explosions are quite but footsteps remain same volume so technically your making the footsteps louder while quieting everything else down yes hifi is better for sound but noone cares to here for explosions in ranked we wanna hear footsteps which that is why alot of people use nightmode

Great video. Does apps like DFX enhancer actuall disturbs the original sounds of the game? So basically, theres no EQ config for the game and its all determined by the quality of your headset ?
I'm not familiar with DFX, but basically any post-processing option won't give you any technical advantage, it just comes down to personal preference and what sounds good to you.
Wondering how valuable that 2 second less ring effect is when I switch between TV and HiFi. 🤔
barely, as it doesnt happen that often

No sibilance on your voices
I am so happy to listen to someone talk for once on CZcams
The latest patch definitely added some kind of audio glitch, been playing this game for years and always enjoyed how complex and engineered the audio was, but in the last month, it's confusing as hell and completely baits me in the wrong directions.
Yep, and sometimes it gets bugged and suddenly you start hearing things from your left which are on your right

I'd also love to see some videos on how different types and qualities of headphones recreate sound for siege and how they handle the spatial stuff to identify origins of sound.
Maybe like decent earbuds, a decent headset, and different budget /type good over ear headphone (closed and open). I keep trying to find good content and suggestions for how much these factors impact shooters and how big of a difference the open back soundstage makes a difference. But there p little content on that kind of thing.
@Tall Guy Films - 'Overly Loud' Gunshots (or, as the Dynamic Range encompasses, the 'punch' of the gunshot sound effects) are the primary reason people use Night Mode. The sound wave of a gun in rapid fire, with greater dynamics, accentuates the higher frequencies. There are also quite a few people who use ear buds - I'm not personally sure how much that factors in, but as the louder sound effects and in-game short music clips aren't playing 100% of the time; It would seem more sensible (given the primary reason) to use Night Mode's flatter dynamic range, at the right volume, for prolonged hours of play. Side Note: I'm not sure I've given an entirely reasonable explanation, so.. I'll probably edit this later (also after some additional analysis).
Hey Tall Guy Films, is HiFi better for listening for footsteps? Honestly, among the 3 dynamic range settings, that’s all I really care about.
Great video, I appreciate all the time you have put into this game to actually give us some concrete evidence. A question, what about the Default Format for Windows Headphones Properties. Should it be set to match your external Dac/amp sampling rate and resolution (for example 24/192 kHz) or match the audio format for the R6 audio engine. Also, would you happen to know the format for r6 audio engine. Thanks
When you change the sample rate settings in Windows, your DAC should adjust to match, and vice-versa. Rainbow6 will also match whatever setting Windows is running at. Typically sound effects in a game have a sample rate of 44.1kHz (or even lower in some cases) in order to save memory, but there's not any huge downside to running at a higher sample rate.
@@AlteraSound Thank you :)

Awsome u should make a video on the astro mixamp EQ setting that we should be using for gaming ur a pro for real👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I would argue that quieter sounds during a gunfight are less important (footsteps, hearing people swap weapons or get onto cameras etc), if you’re firing at someone behind cover, you know where they are its on your visual reaction time.
Finding a setting that helps hear quieter sounds before a gunfight is much more important. (The exceptions being hearing someone prepare a grenade or c4)
What about when you get shot and your hearing goes away when you’re low HP? Does this affect them in anyway? Does it come back sooner like with a breach charge or affect hearing sounds when you finally do get your hearing back? I think I’m gonna move my audio to tv just for the simple fact it’s a good medium. Thanks for the video!:)
Please do this with more games. Modern warfare has a lot of different options
Great video, but I'm not quite sure if I understand the part where night mode apparently makes you go deaf quicker, because in-game HI-FI defo makes shooting louder than night mode.
How quickly our hearing wears out is based on the average volume over time, not the level of the loudest sounds (unless the loudest sounds are loud enough to instantly blow out your eardrums). All the dynamic range modes have roughly the same average level, but if you turn up night mode it will have a higher average level and wear out your ears faster.
nightmode just makes footsteps louder and it sounded closer to me, i liked tv the most(dont judge me plz) cuz it makes louder noise like reinforcing and gunshot not that loud and it also brings foodsteps not too close to me so I won't prefire too close.
PPLEASE START MORE SIEGE CONTENT!!!
Can you do a video explaining how players shoukd set their mid, bass, and trebble? Pls
Would you describe the effect that leveling the dynamic range has on the ear as fatigue? So because everything sounds so similar in volume we become used to much of it and our brain starts filtering out a lot of things? I was running a T-Hunt in HiFi and noticed a lot of subtle sounds I hadn't really paid attention to before. The sound of the small fans running for instance.
That's exactly how I'd describe it!
Thanks
I’m really curious about what headset you use currently or would recommend. I’m on the hunt for a new headset with best surround in siege (I figured if it’s great in siege it’ll be great in any other game.
I tried the GSP 670 from Sennheiser, loved the sound quality, but had trouble with eq settings (I don’t know how to properly customize eq to my preferences so that’s more of a me-eduction/experience issue). What really killed it for me was the wireless dongle. The signal and range was terrible. The dongle was 1 foot from the headset in my PC in a USB 3.0 port. There would be moments in game when the sounds would start to cut out or get choppy or staticky. Definite problem. Would have easily been fixed if Sennheiser added a 3.5mm jack option on these as I typically prefer wired headsets for gaming, but they didn’t give the option.
I’m now trying out the steelseries arctis pro wireless. Again, I don’t know how to properly adjust the Eq aside from the headset, and don’t know what “side tone” means in audio settings. I’m coming from the Sennheiser game zero and I love them, but the hinges wore out beyond repair. I figure if I’m going to get something now, I want something with exceptional performance that I can use for at least 5 years with great performance.
I dunno what to do 😅. Any advice?
Bro the astro a40 is a beast i recommend it
