I really enjoyed this review. Noodler’s is my favorite ink. I enjoyed this ink review in particular. I really like how you took the time, David, to write out the quotations. I always enjoy your stories and the histories that you weave into your reviews. Bravo.
Thanks for the back story on Tolstoy. I honestly know very little about him. I have more Noodler's ink than any other brand. I love the range and variety and the simple fact that he tells us the properties of each of his inks. Oh, and, yes, he does tend to fill 'em up the the brim!
Thanks for the review and the information. I love Noodlers inks and have more of that brand than any other in my collection. It's always a tough decision about what to add next. One of my favorite things about the company is the history lesson available with each ink. Go Nathan! Thanks again David for a detailed review. Robbin
Thanks for the review -- I love putting these opaque/milky inks in my demonstrator pens -- it's nice to be able to tell the ink color by looking at the pen :)
David, thank you for another excellent review and plenty of information added to it, I always learn something listening to your channel, your brill... I love Nathan he's an Alchemist Grand Wizard...my opinion next OK... The reason I think Noddlers Ink bleeds and ghosts on paper like the blessed Tomoe River paper and a number of others is because of... Mordant. Look it up. Nathan's ink strikes / bites into the 'fabric' of papers which is why you can't get rid of it and it goes through the paper. You could go for the pH neutral inks which shouldn't go through. I have a number of Noodlers Inks including Baystate Blue which is very lovely but a pain to work with. You could get blue ghost uv ink and put a couple of drops in your ink for bulletproofness... test for reaction please in a small container like an ink sample bottle if your thinking of mixing. Noodlers was difficult to find at a decent price in the UK till I found PurePens who are Luxury Pens listed agents. Nathan is the best guy we have in the pen world for cost... selections and utility. Best wishes to all pen PenPeople LeZc @@
Interesting observation about Mordant. Thanks. I've tried a couple drops of Blue Ghost on rare occasions and haven't had any trouble yet, but like you said: test it first!
thank you for the review! i love the blue and it's really amazing how waterproof this ink is. as an artist im really interested in how this could react to wet mediums like watercolor.
Great review! I know this is an older video, but I wanted to say that really liked how you did this review with the different pens, quotes, and some great info. From the Russian series, I have Akhmatova and Pasternak and I love them - however those are not like the Tolstoy ink. Pasternak is an amazing gray (if there is such a thing), and Akhmatova is a darker, high-saturation, "forest" sort of green. Write-up reviews for this Tolstoy ink are mixed at best; citing poor flow, very poor saturation and/or overall dullness, and issues with bleed-through as you demonstrated. None of these were an issue with the aforementioned inks. Anyways…I'll be looking out for any other Noodler's reviews you've done!
From the milky look, this is a pigmented ink, not dye based. I have a few of Nathan's pigmented inks, very water resistant but as you saw will bleed through any paper, only write on one side. I've used other pigmented permanent inks, like Scribes, that exhibit similar characteristics. That also explains the minimal shading & quick drying.
Thx for the review David :D I have Noodlers Bad Blue Heron and am scared to use it cus I've allowed my head to become filled with all of the comments on forums and such like, about how the ink wrecks pens and blocks feeds, etc. Any tips for keeping my Pilot Custom 823 good, if I fill it with that ink? Thanks.
I studied Russian in high school and this is the first time in life it’s served a purpose. I’ve developed quite a mystique in my little community as a possible spy. Ironically I’m from Odessa. In Texas.
Great review, David! Thanks for sharing! I'll have to add this to my current set of Russian Noodler's inks. I was just kind of curious: are Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff not part of this series of inks? I know the last two of those are musicians not authors, but I figured Dostoyevsky, at least, would be part of it. Plus it's a brilliant turquoise. Anyway, thanks again for introducing me to this ink (or at least bringing it back to my attention again).
I know yours is a very old comment, but Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff are in the series. Sadly none of them garnered any rave reviews. The latter is a bright pink highlighter type ink, Tchaikovsky is a purple to bright purple (depending on the batch), and Dostoyevsky is a muted turquoise similar to Tolstoy.
Love Noodler's, and I think I like this better than 54th Mass. On my monitor it kinda resembles Iroshizuku Ku-jaku. I can't find this ink online, so what's up with that?
I tried this with my Twsbi vac 700 (f) and it didn’t work out. Not sure if it’s the ink or the pen but the feed doesn’t keep up with standard writing. Can anyone help?
Did not know Tokstoy was part of a series! Neither was I aware of his influence on Mahatma ganhdi. Guess I should finally give his books a go. Not really my colour and the flow is a bit too wet but I enjoyed watching this review. Thanks!
Great review, I don't care much for this ink in particular but all the work you put into it makes it interesting. I think I like your ink reviews more than your pen reviews, but either of them are quite good.
Huh. I had a bottle of Tolstoy last time it was released and hated it. It bled and feathered like crazy! I may pick up another bottle. I always really liked the color.
Buying Noodler's is like playing Russian roulette. You're going to get burned at some point. They're very inconsistent. Some of my favorite inks are Noodler's but I have enough experience with the brand that I almost don't see a point in recommending my favorites to others.
My bottle is a couple years old, so I haven't tried any of the recent batches. The bottle I have is very well behaved. As I mentioned, there can be variance between batches of Noodler's.
I'll just say this. The day after I left the company, ATF agents busted down the front door, raided our building at gunpoint, and were looking specifically for me. I told you I had stories...
I'm kind of confused why he didn't include Solzhenitsyn in this series. Solzhenitsyn's writings, particularly Gulag Archipelago, were crucial in exposing and bringing down the Soviet powers that held the nation in terror for decades.
Jordan Peterson recently did a forward on an abridged addition of Gulag that's coming out this month. He has read his forward on youtube in case it interests you.
@@gammondog Interesting. I'll have to look it up. Peterson is an interesting and controversial person for a publisher to select to write a forward. It would be interesting to hear Solzhenitsyn's thoughts on his writings.

I thought he was against particulate? Besides perhaps his 1776 safety inks.. though I do see that some have a milky look.

Newbie fountain pen user here! Can you expand on what is a music nib? Thanks!
I have an entire video dedicated to music nibs on the channel. Check that out and it should explain everything for you.
Figboot on Pens thank you sir I will check it out.
Are all the other Russian inks waterproof? Nice review btw.
Yes. Each of the current inks in the Russian line are waterproof.
Is the ink that pastel?, or is the bottle plastic?
The bottle is glass. The ink does have a milky texture to it.
Figboot on Pens thanks for the answer!

Yeah, that's what the folks at Goulet Pens told me as well. Such a pity...
