  • In this video, I am explaining why extensions are so important on the cello (even though some cello teachers disagree) and how to do them correctly (www.thecellocorner.co.uk)

This is the best explanation and demonstration I have found on the internet for extensions! As an 87 yr. old trying to learn without a face to face teacher, this is brilliant help. I remember the day I realized: extensions just stretch across some notes I had already learned in order to reach the flat or sharp, much like piano keyboard. Thank you for your patient thorough details of explanation!

Thank you so much; it confirmed, but expanded on, what my teacher taught me yesterday. Zoom lessons can miss things!

Really well explained, especially about how the forward extension starts with the thumb movement. Thank you!

Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I have struggled with left hand positions for a while. Your videos help a lot.

I am a violinist/violist learning the cello. I find that I cannot even do a forward extension without the thumb moving with appropriate fingers, at least I cannot do it without tension and strain. However, I find that when I am about to begin a scale involving the stretch of a Major 3rd, like the A Major scale, I have to start with my hand positioned with the second finger on B and backwards extend to the A. That way, my hand can be fully extended so as to span the whole Major 3rd. Am I doing this right? And all of this I can only do properly in the "German" left hand position (as opposed to the French, with the fingers facing the bridge)..
