Metal Workbench Build

- I built this metal workbench for metal work and welding small parts. I thought this would be a good metalworking project to knock the rust of my welding skills. I used 2x2 inch box steel for the frame and 1/4 inch steel for the top and shelf of the workbench. I will use this as a weld table for a while until I build a dedicated one on wheels but I wanted the bench to be solid and stable so I decided not to add casters. I painted the frame with a farm equipment spray paint from Ace Hardware (Ford Grey) and finished the top and shelf of the bench with paste wax.
As for the video, I wanted to try something a little different. Metalworking is a little dirtier and grittier than woodworking(in my opinion) and I wanted to get that vibe in the video. I hope you like it! Thanks for watching!
Here is the paste wax I used to protect the top and shelf (affiliate)

Like the combination square technique for the bottom shelf cut outs! Table turned out great!
Νά ένας σωστός πάγκος εργασίας.Απλός,λειτουργικός και όμορφος.Απλά τέλειος.Μπράβο!
I've been looking at different metal bench builds, think I found a winner...this one really is simple, practical and SWEET! Nice job Sir, nice job.
Thanks!
This is absolutely going on my fabrication list. Looks stunning.
Thanks!
Excellent build, practical & effective techniques. Very glad this craftsman shielded his arms from the extremely dangerous UV generated by the weld arc. To many times I've seen welding video on CZcams and a reluctance to use long sleeves or leathers to protect skin from UV! Thanx for sharing 😉
Thank you for the feedback!
Maestro de maestros, te ah quedado linda la mesa de trabajo. Felicidades...
That's almost exactly what I need to make. Great video. Thanks.
Rock Solid, sturdy, awesome are just a few words I can say to describe this Workbench, you’re a man of many talents 🍻👍👍👍
Thanks! It is a lit of fun to work with metal. It's been a while but I really enjoy it
Perfect 👌 enjoyed watching. That's how I'm building my shed work bench.
Awesome! Good luck with the build
Wow! That is seriously awesome. This is the first time seeing a metal workbench built. We had lived in Japan for many many years and experience earthquakes on a regular basis. I wish I had your bench to hide under. Although we dont work with metal I chuckled when I watched your video. We can relate because we partially open our garage and used a miter saw exactly as you did. Looking forward to your next project!
Thank you. The chop saw is pretty messy. Nice to shoot all the metal out the back door
Cool table! Thanks for sharing! Clean shop! 🤙🏻
Been trying to find a good metal workbench setup. Thanks for sharing. Great work
Thanks!
Excellent build and speeded up time lapse is like a well earned break from editing. Thank you for sharing and I wish you were able to come to Makers Central in two weeks here in the Uk. 👍😄
Thanks. It was nice to not have to talk through this one. Makers central would be cool. Have fun and report back!
Good job and very nice looking table Im getting ready to build me one just like that. Thanks
Tis a thing of beauty
Just getting ready to start a workbench similar to yours. Your video was very helpful for me.
That great! Thanks for watching!
I’ve been wanting to build a metal workbench and now I think I found one I can build thanks. Awesome job man
Thanks!
Nicely done.
That looks like a table made to last & fit for a hard working life😉
Thanks. I think it will be able to handle whatever I can dish out
Ver6 nice. Simple but very useful and looks quite professional
GREAT WORK
Now that's a work bench
Reminds me of the one I used in the Air Force - very similar. Miss that thing, it was very useful. Thanks for sharing this!
I really enjoyed watching this build, I need to get on making one myself to replace my shaky wooden workbench.
I have a 3'x10' metal bench made from 1/4" wall tubing and 1/4" steel plate that I'm selling. It rolls on (4) 6" casters that are height adjustable. I've had a Cummins diesel on this and it didn't budge. I'm asking $695 . Just putting it out there.
Nice bench, thanks! I'm going to make one very soon
good stuff Dave - great vid as usual! That table looks badass.
Thanks Rob! It was fun to try some different editing(and not do a voice over)
Right on!
Enjoyed watching your build. Great camera angles/settings and soundtracks (def dirty/gritty).
Great job. I’m building one that will allow me to install my two 44” tool boxes with a “desk” area in between. Thanks to your video I’m putting in that lower shelf.
Also new subscriber.
Thanks! Good luck with your build!
Very good project. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!

As all your builds a very well done and solid piece of craftsman furniture, well this is something I would definitely not be able to do in my shop 😉
Nice clean table and workshop. Well done.

Wicked sweet. I'm doing it. Also, nice vice.
Thanks!
Awesome vid! Subscribed
Excellent workbench would recommend using ear defender's in future when using a grinder.
Me encanta!!!
nice! i built a very similar one but used a thinner plate on top. And it warped a bit, damn.. but i can live with it :D
Nice table Dave...should give you years of use. Love the new / different look in this video. 👍
Thanks for the feedback Rob. I think this bench will take a beating for sure!
nice brother. Love from Bangladesh💚❤️🇧🇩
yo loved your work
Great build Dave :) You won't need to be replacing that in a hurry :) ॐ
Thank you. I think it will hold up for as long as I need it
Nice Job
Thanks!
Nice build. I'm about to make a metal work bench myself. It will be mainly angle iron 1/4in with very heavy duty legs. It's going to be built out of sections from a 25ft industrial racking upright.
Thanks! That's a good idea using the rack material. I see it all the time on craigslist and market place.
Nice table!
Thank you
very nice
Thanks!
Brilliant job, you truly have a creative mind and hands for something that looks so simple and practical but obviously took time and forethought. What were the overall dimensions, LWH? Thank you again!
Show de bola 🙂👏
Great work well done my friend .Now what would like to know is if there is a plan for it, or the exact dimensions of the bench in cm if possible.Friendly greetings from Greece.
Super cool project and I love the new video style. Also that is a bad ass vise to go on a bad ass table! Nice work!
Thanks! Yea the vise is a tank but should last for a while. Lol
I just bought a arc welder and this has to be my second welding project after building a belt grinder
A belt grinder is on my list of projects to make. Good luck with the build
Twisted Woodshop thanks man, good luck to you as well
My full swivel vises are on 2x2 tube, and they can slide into 2 receiver hitches, which I mount under the table top, on a reinforced sub frame, on the end, and on the side. They can be stored on the bottom shelf, and add almost 100 pounds to the table. Also, a sub frame at each end has casters, which can be locked up, or down. Easier to move a full table.
Voth sound like good upgrades. My vise takes up a lot of room on the top
Wow
Great job on that table build I like the vise idea with the hidden bolts. What are the dimensions?
Nice work, do you have a material list by chance?
I can believe those magnets held it square. I had to cut mine up twice before I managed to get it square enough to sleep at night.
Yeah, they aren't the best magnets but I think the sequence of welds kept it square. I'm definitely not a pro welder so it could have been just luck
Awesome work I’m gunna build one just like urs how much steel did us use?
💪🔧🔧✅
Awesome, do you want to around around to my workshop and make a couple of these for me!
Very nice bench! Could you ship it to me? Lol
damn i need to level up my welding skills
What thickness tubing did you go with? Looks like 1/8”? Can you confirm?
I’m sorry if someone has already asked but what are the dimensions of the tabletop? Awesome video!
Great build... I was just wondering that what if the vise is on the pipe structure instead of plate on all the corners... Just small pipe could have been welded underneath to the corner to make it more robust...
👍👍👍
Awesome video mate. Best DIY Video Ives seen in a while. Do you have dimensions or plans for it? Looks perfect for what I want
Thank you!. I don't have plans for this. The bench dimensions are 5 ft long x 30 inches deep x 36 inches tall. The bottom shelf is 18 inches wide
Excellent table and video. Can you share the dimensions of the parts?
Thanks
Good job buddy!! Great work. Can I have the true dimensions? thanks.
Great work! What did you apply to clean everything before painting and after it was done?
Thanks. I think acetone or denatured alcohol to clean it and I added paste wax to the bare metal surfaces at the end.
This bench looks simple yet sturdy and functional!
Thanks for sharing.
could you please post what kind of sanding you did on the top surface?
also, is that paint going to prevent rusting?
Thanks.
Thank you. I used a plastic disk to buff out the top. The disks are typically used to remove gasket material in automotive work. The paint is a farm and tractor paint and it has kept the base from rusting so far
@@TwistedWorkshop77 What did you use to coat the top with, some form of wax?
@@carlalm6100 yes, I used Johnsons paste wax
