Some say the outro is still going to this day, on a quiet day you can still hear it playing on the wind lol
Ronnie Van Zant is the vocalist. Allen Collins is playing lead guitar here, although they have three guitars going in their songs: Allen, Gary Rossington, and here, on their first album, Ed King. Bob Burns is on drums, Leon Wilkeson on bass, and Billy Powell on keyboards. This band's story is amazing. For the most part, they were poor street kids from Jacksonville, Florida who became one of the best bands ever. They recorded 6 albums (one live) from 1973-1977. With the addition of Steve Gaines on guitar, Ed King, who contributed greatly to their early success had left a year earlier, they were REALLY taking off. On October 20, 1977 their plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Both pilots were killed, the assistant road manager, backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister), Steve died, and the leader, vocalist, lyricist, and heart and soul of the band, Ronnie Van Zant. The remainder of the band suffered serious injuries. They reformed ten years later with Ed King returning for a time, and Ronnie's younger brother, Johnny on vocals. They still tour today, although it has never been the same without Ronnie.
That is an excellent comment James. You explained it well.
Gonna have to step in & correct you on this....
There were only two guitars on this album. Leon Wilkeson didn't play a single note on this album, Ed King played bass on this entire album. Leon didn't think the band was going to take off so he left the band about 8 months before they recorded this album at Muscle Shoals. I believe they talked Leon into coming back a couple of days before this photo shoot.
A little fun fact about this particular photo that made it onto the cover is the lighting bolt running behind Ed's head was real, you can see it passing in front of the light fixture. There is another photo that shows them ducking for cover the split second after this photo. It was enough that it made Gary Rossington throw up all over the sidewalk.
@@clayrush71 you are correct! 👍
@James MONTGOMERY Hey brother I didn't know that until a couple of yrs ago & I've been listening to them since the first album was released. Kinda showing my age there. It really says a lot about that album being so good that 50 yrs since it's release people are still blown away after hearing it
@@clayrush71 Skynryd FOREVER!!!
The greatest rock and roll song ever
This whole album is one of the best rock albums of all time. I can’t believe it came out FIFTY years ago.
It is a lot of fun watching people discover for the first time what I have been taking for granted for so long
So true, I love seeing young people "discover" the classics. I'm surprised a lot of times by the things they pick up on that l, in some cases, I never did or didn't until the 1000th listen.
You have to do the LIVE version from Oakland 1977.
Also the Fox Theatre Atlanta is a slightly different and special version.
Why do people want people to hear a lower quality sound?
One of the most requested songs of the 70s. Great reaction.
Do That Smell .... Call Me The Breeze
T. For Texas T. For Tennessee. Really, their whole catalog is good stuff.
In the beginning of this song it is Gary Rossington playing the slide guitar making those beautiful sounds. On the last half it is Allen Collins playing the lead. Allen wrote that riff at 16 years old. Left to right on that album cover you have Leon Wilkeson (bass ) Billy Powell (keyboards) Ronnie Van Zant (vocals) Gary Rossington (guitar) sitting in the center, Bob Burns (drums) standing behind Gary, Allen Collins (guitar) and Ed King (guitar) rounding out the guitar army. You can't go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Try The needle and the spoon or whatever you want because as I said you can't go wrong with LS.
Leon never played a single note on this album. Ed King played bass on this entire album
You now need to view the 1977 Oakland live concert. I went to it. It was one hell of a show. I was 33 then and am now 68 and still rockin and livin in the Philippines. Served 30 yrs. in the military and found the Philippines the best place to retire.
Respect and love to you sir.😃
And all those people in the crowd are grandparents now!!!
I’m 19 years old and from philippines and i’m rockin to lynyrd skynyrd and classic rock bands
@@LaurenzPaulOrdona-jh3hyThat's awesome! Do you have a favorite?
@@alapseinjudgementadultlang7787 Poison Whiskey is one of my fav skynyrd song
That Smell, Simple Man, and Sweet Home Alabama are their other biggest hits. I'm sure you've heard Sweet Home Alabama, unless you've been living under a rock.
amazing youve never heard this song, the most famous solo ever in the history of rock
The first line is actually a question Allens girlfriend ask him ( he later married her )
For more guitar magic, try UFO's Rock Bottom from the Phenomenon album.
You want some other Lynyrd Skynyrd recommendations? The closet is full of them. They Call Me The Breeze, Simple Man, Saturday Night Special, That Smell, Down South Jukin, Gimme Back My Bullets, Gimme Three Steps, Curtis Lowe, Sweet Home Alabama, Tuesday Gone and Comin Home are some to get you started.
T-R-O-U-B-L-E
Needle and the spoon
Now that this has been requested, I got more for ya. You gotta do Tuesday's Gone, Simple Man, Gimme Three Steps, and Sweet Home Alabama for sure, all classics and any of them would be great!
Welcome to the Skynyrd Nation!!!!
Now. Right now go watch the live from oakland october 1977. Thank me later
Great performance and sound, but the worst camera work I have ever seen in concert footage. The focus is almost never on who is playing.
Curtis Lowe another great one that nobody below mentioned
Awesome song!! You really need to watch the live version from Oakland CA. Too many songs to list!! just dive down the rabbit hole, and you'll enjoy it!
Fun fact…they called themselves Lynard Skynyrd after a teachers name that told them that they would never amount to anything in life and they were failures. I wonder what that teacher thought when they got crazy huge and famous 😂
The teacher's name was "Leonard Skinner" btw, just in case people needed that.
Nah man thats some top tier trolling 😂
Other LS songs: Sweet Home Alabama, Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, Call Me The Breeze, Gimme Three Steps, Ballad of Curtis Loew, I know A Little, Don’t Ask Me No Questions, Working for MCA, T For Texas, You Got That Right. There’s plenty more.
In the 1977 concert in Oakland the band members were as follows lead vocals Ronnie Van Zant guitars Steve Gaines Allen Collins Gary rossington Leon Wilson artimus Pyle on drums and Billy Powell on piano.
May I suggest Call Me the Breeze and T for Texas for your listening pleasure., and I promise it will be pleasurable.
Your reaction said it all bro.my favorite band of all time.simple man and call me the breeze are the next two best of tbeirs
Got to love them southern boys!!!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Now.....
GOTTA DO LIVE,OAKLAND 1977!!!!!!!
"911, what is your emergency?"
"- Yes, I would like to report a MURDER OF A GUITAR!"
you need to check out this song live in Oakland.
Actually you really need to see the live version of this song, which was at the Oakland coliseum on July 2,1977, It will truly blow your mind. And the lead singer was the late great Ronnie Van Zant, who passed away in the plane crash on October 20 of 1977.
The banger all other bangers are judged against.
you only get to hear the freebird solo for the first time once
"T for Texas" live is another great song by them. There are a few video versions out there.
Treat yourself...
Watch the live version...
🔥
3:36 Ronnie Van Zant, and he was damn good
Yes, all are in the band. Three guitars, a bass, drums and piano. Of course, Ronnie on vocals. Allen’s solo is more than epic. This song, band is greatness personified. Best Southern Rock band ever, and that says something.
So another must hear is The Breeze on their album second helping
The lead guitarist name's Allen Collins, and the second lead/rhythm guitarist Steve Gains, the slide guitar and rhythm is Gary Rossington
ALL leads on FREEBIRD on first studio Record.
LARKIN ALLEN COLLINS. R I P.
All slide on FREEBIRD from studio album GARY ROSSINGTON.
THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME
Great reaction man. It's great how closely you pay attention and it seemed like you immediately started getting the power of it and the beauty of it. Along with Stairway to Heaven and possibly Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, those would be the holy triumvironment of the most revered classic rock songs of all time.
For a change of pace and shows a different side of them, but also a very beloved fan favorite, check out this song called, The Ballad Of Curtis Loew. Here is a link to what I think is the official audio. Sounds like a good mix to me.

First time I have ever seen one of your reactions. All I can say is welcome to the world of rock and the music of my youth. This is one of the best guitar solos in history. Now I'm going to check out your other reactions. Peace be with you and ROCK ON !!!
OK, Just had a look through and here's a couple of suggestions. "ACDC", Thunderstruck (Official Video) and "Guns and Roses", Sweet Child O'Mine (Official Video). If you like them I'll suggest more.
Best first albim in history, with the exception of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. LS is up with ABB as greatest American rock band ever.
Gary slide. Allen leads in the solo. Ed King the second main guitar in solo. Leon on bass.
WRONG! That solo is 100% Larkin Allen Collins! Leon didn't even play a single note on this studio album, Ed King played bass on every single song on this album
Should also give Sublime a check out. Santeria, What I Got, Doin Time, Garden Grove, Badfish, some of their biggest radio hits and they have quite a catalogue as well, totally worth a check out!
Chek out Lynyrd Skynyrd live at Oakland Collisium Free Bird 1977. 🐦
Check out the Winter Brother's song, "Tobacco Road" for another Banger with Guitar, Organ, Sax and Skat. Live version!
Fyyyrrreee
Welcome to the world of Southern Rock, three guitars, no waiting. You really need to watch the live version, it's better and longer
Lynyrd Skynyrd was in a plane crash that took the lives of 3 of the members and their road manager, including the singer
That is a slide guitar in the beginning.
Kingsman church fight brings this song to me
I'm sure you're going to get requests to check out the live Oakland performance....
Maybe at a later date check it out. The ultimate live performance is the Knebworth show, that's the one you want to do a reaction video on. 10X better than the Oakland show
Look up freebird live oakland
“Call me the Breeze” Warning. Do not attempt to drive at the same time as listening to it.

Everyone wants to scream South Florida, ie: Ft. LAUDERDALE, Miami, Welp welcome to North Florida my guy Jacksonville Florida home of Lynyrd Skynyrd....

Oakland 1977.
Check out Led Zeppelin, Stairway to heaven, you won't be sorry.
They have 50 songs Pick any one. Live or studio. Their better live. Hard to beleave.
Meet the band that kicked the Rollng Stones butts off their own stage in the UK in 1976. Skynyrd unquestionably one of the top live acts ever.
The Stones were cooked in 1976, and at Knebworth, they spent the entire evening backstage getting high and drinking champagne at a Moet and Chandon party that included Jack Nicholson. The show had severe technical difficulties by the time 10cc arrived, and cancellation was imminent. Skynyrd was hungry and revitalized with the addition of Steve Gaines, while the Stones had been in the game for 16 years and were on the brink of disbandment. Moreover, their lead guitarist Mick Taylor (1969-1974) abruptly quit the band, which hurt their live act in 1975-76. So, if you want to champion Skynyrd beating a mediocre version of the Stones who were more interested in being rock stars and doing drugs, that's fine.
@@fuchsiaswing8545 I guess if you want to make excuses for The Stones, burn out is a good one. I’m sure all their paying fans that night understood. At least Skynyrd came to play. Legend had it, Skynyrd’s beatdown on your tired band reenergized the Stones.
@@jfrisaro Indeed, Skynyrd stole the show that day-no one will argue that. But context is certainly needed. With a band like the Stones, it's like the Wild West: the Stones were the fastest gun alive, and every "gunslinger" wanted a piece. It comes with being a great band and having a longstanding prestige.
I wonder if Skynyrd could have maintained the pace the Stones went at, as Ronnie was already talking about retirement the next year and experiencing his own version of "burnout." Wasn't he going to hand the reins over to Steve and shift his focus to the studio?
@@fuchsiaswing8545 A few years earlier, Skynyrd warmed up for The Who, by far a better live band than the Stones, and gave them a run for their money on stage. Ronnie’s mantra was always to blow the other acts off the stage. Yes, LS had their share of turmoil in 5 yrs. You act like the Stones were the only. Replaced Bob, who had a breakdown. Ed quit mid tour. Addictions were a problem. Ronnie’s voice was bothering him. Obviously Stevie breathed new life into LS. Street Survivors was about to be a massive album. Hard to imagine LS was slowing down. Would have loved to see how LS’s trajectory would
have been. It’s tragic we’ll never know. But they were badass and not afraid of a fight. Their 5 yr catalog of music ranks up with any band, ever. They dominated the Stones. History showed that and no one dominated them.
@@jfrisaro I greatly respect Skynyrd, and as a bass player, I always loved Leon's style. That said, I am not "acting" as if the Stones were the only band to experience turmoil. It's part of being in a band, but let's show a little respect for them as they defied enormous odds and helped pave the way for numerous others, such as Skynyrd. In fact, in the summer of 1964, didn't Ronnie, Gary, and Bob Burns form the earliest incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd (My Backyard) in high school after listening to the Stones' "Time Is On My Side"? That puts into context how long the Stones have been around.
The Who is one of the greatest bands, and they had a habit of overshadowing the Stones as a live act in the pre-Mick Taylor era. However, from 1969-1973, the Stones were an unstoppable force on stage. Although not as musically proficient as the Who, they could give any of the best live acts a run for their money, and Pete Townshend habitually fawns over them to this day.
I agree: they dominated the Stones at Knebworth, but as stated in my previous comments, the setting and situation could have been better. I never liked the arrangements during their 1975-76 tours, as Billy Preston and Ollie Brown were given too much emphasis as sidemen. Keith hated it, and that's why everything was scaled down to basics for the Some Girls Tour, which was one of the best in the Ronnie Wood era.
What the actual fuck just happened.
Watch I'm live , backing up the Rolling Stones, Slide guitar player pass away 3, 5 23 Gary Rossington , thank you, there all together now
Check out sweet home Alabama gimme back my bullets what your name that smell last of a dyin breed god and guns
