Really into this, it snuck its way up in the order of stuff to demo. Highly recommended, beats out the behringer semi modular stuff by a mile, I feel beats out the Mavis and Mother 32 in price and features ((((and sound, don't tell anyone))))

Truly enjoy my East Beast. I sometimes just leave it running while I am doing chores, tweaking it as I like. It sounds good pretty much every way you use it. Add some effects and it is just a lot of synth. You can get some decent FM tones, and the random feature lets you create stochastic music sequences, in addition to all the generative. The sequencer being 'simple' is not really stopping me. I have more powerful sequencers if I want them, but standing alone, this creates great sounds that I think are useful for anything you want out of a mono-synth with one oscillator.
The east beast looks great but I’m holding out for the west pest. Either way I wish these existed when I was first looking for semi modular synths, they would be more useful in my current setup than my microbrute and werkstatt even though I still love and use both of them.
So waiting for the West Pest.... at the start of August.
Level up! You have now mastered the "loopop style" nice one bro. I have a lifeforms and the pittsburgh sound is just delightful. They truly are a quality manufacturer..
Such a powerful little beast... excellent review Jorb !
Really is a ripper. Cheers!
Well presented! You make a STRONG case for this Beast being a No Brainer! East vs West...East the more musical. I think it's pretty.
Very cool video! :)
I'm thinking about getting an east beast just for its juicy filter. :D
But currently i'm more excited about the West Pest which should arrive in about two weeks. Will there be a video on that as well?
Would be very curious about that, cause i like how you do gear demos.
Regarding the lowpass / highpass filter combination:
As far as i understand it, how it behaves depends on the phase relationship between both signals and their routing.
A serial routing of one into the other gives you a bandpass and is often the way how a bandpass is implemented. In an SVF like topology you typically have three points in the circuit on which you can get the different filter types. Even there a bandpass is like passing the signal through the highpass and then through the lowpass.
With a parallel routing and both signals in phase with each other, you get a notch and that's probably what happens here.
If you were to filp the phase of one of the filters by 180° (i.e. inverting its signal), you'd get a peaking allpass filter where all frequencies get passed through, but the resonance boosts the band around the cutoff point. A nice little trick which lets get way more out of of your eurorack filters if they have outputs for each filter type. Mixing those and inverting some of the signals can give some pretty nice results. :D
From what I've heard, I'm really impressed with both the East Beast and the West Pest, and want them both for no good reason.... I don't need them, but I do /want/ them. Badly. LOL!
Great wee box. I’d say it’s worth it for the filter alone, Ooft! Top vid man, I may have to find space for one of these blighters. Cheers man 👍
Much appreciated, cheers. I agree, filter is worth the price of admission
Thank you
"Come on!" 😂
Worth the price for the filter alone. I had never tried a Pittsburgh filter until recently when I got the Filter of Crows (also wonderful and gets gnarly). I'm really looking forward to what Pittsburgh Modular does next beyond their Safari series and coordinating with Cre8. Nice oscillator too, and it indeed is switching waveforms quickly to generate noise (which is also why it responds to V/Oct). Hope you get a West Pest to cover next!
This thing is so sweet!
Thx, please make more videos using the east beast
Good video man. This thing looks rad! And the filter sounds dope. Do you have plans to do the west pest?
Jorb… love the channel.
I’ve noticed you use a lot of pedals and I have been getting into pedals with my keyboards/synths recently!
Have you run into any (or a lot of) headroom issues with some of your pedals? Most guitar pedals are expecting a HiZ signal though some like the space echo and other stereo pedals seem to do okay with a line level source (and may have a selector for it).
My first pedal was the Mako R1 reverb. As a pedal it’s okay - I think the reverb might need a little EQing as it can make the top end a little metallic (and I may end up selling it for that reason) but I want to play with it a bit more.
Unfortunately the pedal didn’t have a lot of headroom and I had to keep my volume lower or the signal would break up. I ended up getting a radial engineering extc-stereo reamp box and now I can convert my line level signals to HiZ before running them into a pedal. Then the reamp box converts the return to line level and I can send it to my mixer. It is allowing me to use my Walrus Julianna in-line with my Vox Continental with more headroom which is great when tracking! Then I can use the balanced aux sends / returns on my SSL Big Six mixer to send a mix to my boss space echo and then to my R1 reverb then back to my mixer to blend in parallel with my mix! To use it in parallel I did need to look in the space echo manual to see how to get it 100% wet.
The nice thing about the extc-stereo reamp box is that it seems to give me way more headroom and allows me to use my unbalanced cables but still have a balanced connection to/from my mixer or interface.
Very good video Jorb!
I think this is killer for the price! So many features, that is so cool! The filter is probably really good for fat basses, but i wish it was a little dirtier. How does it do with distortion? Should i ever get a cre8audio i’d go for the West Pest i think, but if it ever pops up, used for a good price and i have the money, i‘d buy it.
Awesome review. Manual is a bit too high level and this video made it all make sense specially the sequencer/arp features. Good stuff Jorb.
🙏🙏Happy to do it
I chose Jorb for the first reviewer of this synth. He never let's me down.
🙏🙏🙏
Love how beat up that digital delay pedal is.
edit: regarding your oscilloscope, something is high-passing the signal ever so slightly and distorting the waveform.
I may just be ripping it through the send channels too hot, should compensate on the scope.
Thanks!
Goddamn it Jorb now I want one
SUCCESS lol
Nice video!
I know i'm late but.... considering your scope, i was wondering if you have it on DC coupling and not AC coupling. Cause the square wave def looks like an AC coupled square/pulse. AC coupling will basically filter out all steady voltages (which is a lot for a square wave ;) )
I want East beast a lil more then west pest but both for 500 a good price. Also moog mavis looks good for entry level simi modular so far I only have the typhon with my mpc looking to maybe make the jump to simi modular but having fun with my typhon currently
Thank you! This is very helpful especially for a noob like me 😊
Happy to help!
Everyone should have an East Beast, even grandmas.
Massive woggles.
Interesting - more interesting than I expected, and better sound than I exxpected. Uh, hey, how do you connect your oscilloscope? Is it hanging off your mixer? - how is it cabled? (asking because I have a couple extra oscilloscopes hanging around and they're bored)
1/4in to bnc adapters, hooked into aux sends from my mixer.
interesting...
I got the West Pest off my boys for father's day last Sunday and I am quite taken with the little box
I was thinking of getting a Moog Mavis, just so I could say, "hey, I have a Moog," but watching this is making me think about that
Great video, as always. I just got an EB and love it. Question maybe you can answer. When I use my external keyboard connected with CV, the external keyboard causes the EB to output audio twice as load as when I play notes using the EB keyboard. Any ideas why?
It's a notch.
Thanks for filling in Richard.
Well done, all around!
With the combination waves, and that pseudo pitched random… I’m getting serious C64 SID vibes.😁
Oooo good call
I love you content Jorb, superb. Which cable you used to conect the East Beast to a MIDI controller (or other synth)? Thank you in advance homie
Cheers!
Fullsize DIN midi, into a midi to trs adapter.
Ones included!
I can't believe this showed up on my feed as I wait for the West Pest that was supposed to come last month.
I'm sure they'll ship soon!
@@JorbLovesGear Thanks! Sounds like they are here, so shipping out this week and the next couple of weeks. The East Beast sounds so analogue-juicy-terrific even over a youtube video. I can't wait to try "West Coast Synthesis" for the first time!
@@nsbd90now same👀
When you get a chance, can you ask your Boss DD2 what the Great Kanto earthquake was like ?
I love the EB so much I bought a West Pest! I’m thinking of getting another EB. It’s still cheaper than buying the same modules individually for euro rack. What do you think?
"OooOOoooo!" (heard quietly at 0:09) - LOL!
And I f*ckin' LOVE your DD-2 - that piece has seen some work and is obviously *well loved*. I so love your enthusiasm. ;)
@@synthseeker that dd-2 is honestly one of my favorite pieces of gear. Will last longer than me, I hope!
I own a Korg Volcá Monologue, Microkorg, Korg Volcá Fm, I was looking for anorher synth, and I like this one, sounds good, but I don't know what would difference it from the ones that I own, probably should look for a wavetable synth
The 2 shift keys remind me of the TI83!
Please do a West Pest demo/review. Thanks.
Absolutely my favorite synth right now, I've been running it into my OBNE Dark Star pad reverb and it's just so compelling (you said it already but it's true) and otherworldly
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You can adjust the Midi Octave by holding Blue + Octave Up/Down.
I got that from one of the creators in the elektronauts topic for it.
I couldn't get it to go as far down as I'd like (I get to C4 on kbd is C5 on the end), but it's much better.
Also, the internal clock gets really funky and slows down when in the "noise" mode compared to the other oscillaters
Right now? unfortunately nowadays most things turn into a trend.
25:58 onward; put a techno beat underneath that and it would fit almost perfectly into the Streets Of Rage II soundtrack. Nice sounds!
Some differences but I just picked up a 2nd Neutron for $200 and it’s hard to beat the value of that machine, the options you have are insane.
I had troubles with neutron staying in tune, and tuning scaling. But if it works for you, hell yeah
I looked at the Neutron at one point (and the Crave) and what is most compelling about the East Beast is the collaboration with Pittsburgh Modular. These guys really know analog synthesis. I have the Microvolt 3900 and it is a gorgeous instrument. So when I head this (and the West Pest), these got on my 'to buy' list. I picked this one up first... That filter....
Neutron for the win all the time, every time!
@@JorbLovesGear I found if I let it warm up for 30 mins and then power cycle it again to go through the tuning protocol it tended to stay in tune. It's funny tho, because one of mine "wobbles" a bit more than the other as far as tuning so I do think it varies from machine to machine.
It sounds like a resonant notch? If that is even possible? It's like you can only hear the resonant bump moving around but not notching the sound? Very strange indeed.
Very similar to the crave. Especially the multi mod out. Pretty much identical but the crave has more. Perhaps a nicer filter on the east beast.
Maybe offer some front plate alternatives?
👀👀🤫
Thatd be great. I want one of these but the front plate is off puting for sure lol
Yeah, cool synth but my god it's ugly
I noticed the same 2 octave difference when controlling the East Beast with a Keystep or Circuit Tracks. This looks like a weirdness of how the East Beast maps midi notes to cv.
You can adjust it! Hold tap tempo, and then Octave shifts.
Going to cut it out of the video
@@JorbLovesGear Oh that’s awesome, I didn’t realize. This was the only thing that annoyed me about the East Beast. Thank you for the tip!
I like my Softpop II tbh
Nooo don't stop sending your voice through the scope! 🙂
High key I might do it on its own channel next time 😂
Anyone notice that he plays “where’s you’re head at” by the basement jaxx at 9:34
The comment made about only one input for the filter at about 16:40, You only need 1 input for the filter. If you want 2, or even more, just get a splitter or a stackable patch cable.
Sure, but I don't see trying to mix un-attenuated modulation with a passive splitter as a real solution
@@JorbLovesGear why?
I thought he meant the lack of input for controlling the resonance.
MS-20 THE Semi-Modular Mono Synth but without a sequencer but actual keys
🖖✨💛
🙏🙏🙏
It's cool. Don't get me wrong but it's $500 here. It's 1/4 of my P12 Module I am getting.
If I didn't already have so many modules, I would get one but alas.
It’s $250
Are you looking at someone price gouging on reverb? They're half that from pretty much all retailers (when they're in stock)
@@fl33ce_ No it's $500 where I am from, is that too hard for *you* to understand?
@@Jamesjimjimmy You know not everyone lives in the US right?
@@dankeplace lol so whats the conversion rate from the us to where you are? Jw
I have been looking at this since your superbooth vid. I think it will be my upgrade from volca bass.
Or in addition to
Yeah I wanted the bass but got this
$250 for 1 voice and the front panel, can we have an 8-voice for $800 please? 😜
that would be
so great
Really cool semi-modular. I just wish it wasn't so damn ugly :(
Another silly complain it looks fine!
A great instrument, perhaps sounds a bit thin?
But you didn’t go and buy this yourself…. they sent it you for free. How hard would be to say negative things about a synth when you’ve met the guys chatted with you and they took the trouble to ask you to review it?
I watch all your videos and really appreciate your contribution but I’m starting to really doubt reviews were guys get sent stuff they didn’t pay for and gave to live with. Yep I understand there would be less reviews. But to say your not influenced by the above seems just a bit ridiculous. I’m not trying to be a dick, I understand people can be like that. I’m just wanting your thoughts. I know you have integrity- and someone is bound to comment telling me how amazing you are and how dare I. But I think this is an issue right across CZcams and ‘they’re not paying me’ really didn’t cut it.
I hear what you're saying, its tougher to be objective when it feels like I've been done a favor.
While I do appreciate working with companies, I don't make any mistake that in many ways, I am just low-cost advertising. And to be honest, I don't mind that; I get to try more gear and share it with you guys, and I see that only as a positive. You mention it but I want to emphasize, I couldn't show off nearly as much gear if I was buying everything full price. Working with companies is the only way I could do this.
I'm at the point where I say no to getting things I don't want to demonstrate. Things I don't see a clear use-case for, or have tried and didn't like, I'll decline. It isn't worth it for me to take the time to learn or show off something that doesn't in some way excite me.
So I can't speak for anyone else, but the only things I'm going to show off for free, its something I was already interested in.
And one last thought, most gear these days is honestly really good lmao.
@@JorbLovesGear I really do appreciate your full honest response to my question and the way you have taken it in the spirit it was meant - thank you so much for your response. Think it may also help others who may just flip to negative assumptions. As always please know your videos and your whole approach to gear adds a little bit of warmth to people lives. Ie you make a difference :D Thank you
Yeah plus I wonder if they keep them or just resell them? It's crazy all the stuff they get I want to do a show damnit for fun plus free gear c'mon! I feel like stimmings show s are pretty honest and molten modular
The synth sounds awesome, is feature rich, but my god that panel is too much of a cluttered and hideous mess. Enough so that it’s actually making me not want to buy it
Then don't buy it. Or play with your eyes closed.
How do you figure? It's 250$ find something better for the price? It's funny the little things people complain about like who cares honestly it's about the sound anyway!
Big deal 😂
Looks ridiculous and sounds cheap
Definitely doesn't sound cheap lmao
