Warning -- the fake leather is very bad for the environment. IT is a man made non-natural material that will not degrade for 100,000 year as it leaches chemicals and oils into the environment. Animals will be ingesting trace elements from that so-called "fabric" for thousands of years as it poisons the environment. DO NOT be selfish and short sighted. Natural products are always better for the earth than fake ones. Go with the natural leathers, metals, woods etc. All of them are renewable and degrade harmlessly when you dispose of them. Think GREEN and go GREEN. Say no to fake products.
Although I'm Audi driver, this facelift 5-series is by far the best-looking car in it's class at the moment.
No one beats the interior. Mercedes interior is horrible!

The best video presenter from Germany on youtube, sehr gut arbeit, I like and enjoy very much your new cars video presentations, your english is quite good and understandable most of the time, and I understand you target your videos to the british and american markets, but I would rather hear your comments in german. I speak fluent english, not so fluent german, aber ich kann mich verteidigen, einfach mein deutsch is gerostet. Ich muss deutsch üben deshalb möchte ich, dass das Video auf Deutsch ist. Na ja, Kein problem mit englisch auf jeden fall. Wenn sie jemals in den Norden Spaniens reisen, wo es einige schöne straßen gibt, rufen sie mich an.
Straight-six for me with some brightwork for the trim. I've never liked Shadowline blackout trim, is too gloomy. And these days, I prefer something cheerful.
Why won't BMW offer top engines in their Touring models, i'm sure they would sell and i don't see any major engineering differences with the drive train between the models?

I'm curious Thomas... Do you know or have knowledge of the BMW 545e (yes the hybrid nomenclature) Will that powertrain be coming to the states in the form of this new 5 series? I know it's available in the X5 SAV, but I'm more intrested in the 5 series sedan myself. I'd actually buy this version of the new 5 series! The new 535ei w/ all wheel drive of course! Also...Has BMW gone all in on the chinese market with that expansive semi-limo look in the passengers backseats? Does the mantra from BMW "The ultimate driving machine" still apply? I ask since I am the driver.

The video seems to shake alot when you are test driving the 550 around the 25 minute mark. Is the 550 less smoother than the 540 on the road?

They’ve played it safe and I think this will be a welcome relief compared to some of the other models in the BMW. It would have been good to mention Apple Carkey as the new 5 series is the first model to support it.

What city did you do your test in?
The 540i is a fantastic car but I still love the 550i for sound and power. A must is one or the other.
540 can make more power with tune and it’s way more reliable.
The black grille with the white paint actually looks very beautiful. Haven't been a fan of the other color/grille combinations with the new LCI model so far.

Very very nice 5 series BMW and that 6 cylinder is nice also the cockpit isnt too digital and gives more intuitive interaction with the driver, etc. I really like This blue color but I would choose the darker gray trim thank you Thomas
Thomas is right. BMW's assistance system is the best. My Tesla's Autopilot is trash. The "phantom braking" issues keep happening to me.
Agreed. Although phantom braking doesn’t happen often in my Model 3, it’s such a letdown when it does...Beta software with a capital B. 😤 Supposedly the rewrite is coming in weeks, but then again FSD has been promised for years. I’ll believe it when I see it, not holding my breath 🧐

Actually , the exhaust tip on the 550 models is different from the rest.
my advice to you is to select page or white color for interior , never chose dark color such black ,or use high flash light

Hi Thomas, always great to watch your videos. This is a very cool car. Lovely interior and they haven't ruined the grills.....yet. lol One more observation, these models should not have a M badge on the trunk. Cheapens the real M5 models. Take care and thumbs up!

Enthustiast knows the difference still, its not like it is slapped to a 518d trunk.
@@Mariini For years, decades, the posers who owned standard BMW cars would sometimes place a M badge in front of the model number. M528i, M540i M325i etc. It got so bad in Southern California, practically everyone who owned any BMW put a M in front of their number! Now BMW themselves are placing the M in front of some of their lesser model cars. I don't care for this styling cue and it really does cheapen the genuine M badge that comes on the various models of their highest performing cars.
Seems like there is room for something between standard models and top hardcore sports variants. Audi & Mercedes also do it. I agree that adding your own m badge to a standard BMW is pretty tragic, but m-lite models are not standard. Anyway, enthusiasts will know the difference, and non-enthusiasts don’t care either way...

Trouble is, out of all of my friends and relatives, I am the only person who cares about cars at all! ha ha The rest of the circle I'm in, could care less about cars. I would be going for 2020 M540 with the older digital cockpit. Much classier, I am really not a fan of this new digit cockpit, very bland and boring. The performance of this model is on another level though

Thomas loves his vegan seats. IF I was in the market for these kinds of high-end cars, I'd want the seats to be ventilated and heated!
The materials wouldn't be of a big concern for me personally, granted they'd have to look and feel beautiful & comfortable!

Had a test drive of M550i a few days ago. Since when did BMW start making luxury cruisers? Is that because they have Chinese market in mind? Beautifully designed car..but I am not completely sold on the performance part.

Your political views have you now delusional. SensaTec (vinyl plastic) "feels better that the top Merino leather on the seats? I was given a loaner car with SensaTec seats and they are far from even mid grade leather let alone the flagship level Merino Leather. Another correction. Rear entertainment touch screens are two completely separate GPS units and devices than the front for entertainment and car/ambient lighting control. They can mirror the front or be completely independent. In other words there can be 3 separate GPS systems that can be operated at the same time. They are actually the best in the industry.

However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette.
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

BMW use to be my favourite. I find them quite ugly in the past 10 years or so. Audi, VW and Mercedes are doing much better in design. Voice activation doesn't work in 99% of all car reviews (not just autogefuhl) haha.

What is the point of the spoiler at the rear ?? Good lord waste of time, like someone left there ruler on the boot
It does not need a wing on its back, that is enough. It is basically F11 M5 so it goes if one dares.
The rest of the car is so smooth and aero (they all are now in this class) that it doesn't take much to ruffle the airflow just a little, and hence reduce lift at the very rear at very high speeds. Could let you drive 150 on a wet road in crosswind without crashing, vs "only" 147....... Rather academic for most anyone sane. But then again, the auto industry had pretty much solved all genuinely pressing practical dynamic driving problems by 1995 at the latest. And heck, darned near anything has got to be more important than shaving a tenth of a second per lap around Burgerking, with some professional hotshoe at the wheel.

5 series Interior is dated and needs a major refresh.
Yeah it feels like that 90% of the interior has been the same for the last 10 years.
Other German brands has really nice updated interiors like Mercedes, Audi and even Volkswagen.
I especially like the new Volkswagens.
That doesn’t make any sense the interior is still very new for a 3 year old car and it will be getting a redesign in 2022 probably
It's still almost flawlessly functional, has everything you'll ever need in a luxury car and the build quality is better than anything Mercedes can offer at the moment. Seriously, there's nothing cheap about this car, but in the E Class you can find some cheap plastic.

Not sure how to feel. Will never spend this much on a new car. Family & community have much better uses for the excess $.
As for a used purchase in the US, BMW are a luxury brand. They are complicated, require proprietary information, and as a result require rare highly compensated technicians.
The reputation in the US for used BMWs needing repairs at staggering costs are legend .. and often.
So, the depreciation is massive. The choice between used reliable Japanese competitors and higher performance German brands is an interesting one. Like a entertaining a crazy diva, you will only do it once.
Plus, with President Biden's carbon tax coming at the carbon source, gas prices are likely to skyrocket. Perhaps to four times current prices to actually curtail US carbon emissions. (That's the % of increase during the Oil Cartel embargo of 1972, the one shock that actually reduced US carbon dioxide output substantially).
So think EV supplied with solar panels. Joe and Kamala got ya surrounded.
Autogefühl is not indepdent. Otherwise they would have said what EVERYONE was saying in the comments: The front of the new 4 series is ugly as hell!
I think it looks great. So now it's, at most, everyone except, at least, one.... :)
I feel this 5er looks perhaps too flabby with it's much shorter, somewhat vertically squashed kidneys. Not that either of them look bad; but with the new pedestrian friendly hood shapes, I don't feel taller grilles are hurting looks at all. Especially in long-hooded designs like the 4. BMW has generally been the most daring of the stalwart Germans, wrt design. With their typical 4 series customer the most daring of all. It only make sense to introduce such a "radical" (by German standards) design on that model.
