I think they announced it early because of the plan to sell cross-gen skins and gems. They want to keep Smite 1 income going while mostly working on Smite 2.

They also had to announce early because there was no way to just keep the game quiet while they basically stop updating smite…. Like if there was no explanation for the lack of content for smite then people would outrage and probably quit. So as much as it sucks and they should’ve said that beta will be released in 25 and the full game released in 26, they didn’t. lol I would say if the game stayed in beta I don’t think a single person would mind at all.

I think they just announced it way too early in development. Shot themselves in the foot before the get go. The 9.5 revert has been absolutely amazing and so much fun but sadly I’ve had half of my friend group uninstall the game before the patch dropped as they “wait for smite 2” Which from my understanding is an extremely common sentiment.

I 100% agree that they needed to wait a while longer to announce Smite 2 and really should have kept it business as usual until it was much further along. I will say that Conquest players have been spoiled the last two years by having such a regular update and changes, they now know how literally every other mode has had it for years. I do expect a lot more drop off if there aren't any meaningful changes soon such as map updates or new gods, just some new items isn't enough.

Signed up for SMITE the second i saw game play and got into the closed Beta. Been like 10 years of playing SMITE. The last 3-5 years I've been slowly playing less and less and last year i finally stopped playing. I left the game installed cause I do enjoy a game of Assault now and then. When they announces SMITE 2, it made me feel like it was pointless to play SMITE 1. Even when i hardly played I would still want to collect some skins and do some fun event challenges and what not. But SMITE 2 announcement removed my wants to play the game for those reasons. I was a die hard SMITE player for a long time and as the light was fading over the years, the announcement of SMITE 2 just slammed the door closed for me. I hardly even consume SMITE content any more.
Also this has nothing to do with SMITE 2 but the SPL was very fun at first. Then it became a thing where like ever 6 months rosters would change drastically and that made it very annoying to stay rooting for one team. That seemed to get worse and worse. The whole "rosterpolypse" thing being like encouraged by HiRez and the SPL felt odd to me. The SPL forced you to root for individual players since team rosters changed so frequently. Wouldnt you want players to stay on teams for long periods of time and build a fan base for the team and treat the teams like an actual sports team? Either way, that stuff made me less interested in the SPL.
Maybe my time for loving SMITE has just ended. It happens. I dont hate the game at all i was just bored with it after 10+ years. Announcing SMITE 2 wasnt going to fix anything for me there. But again, I hope it has success.

I still watch Smite content like here on Inters3cts channel and I usually tune into videos from Incon, FineOkay, and Mast occasionally. I have been playing Smite since it launched on console, so I'm pretty much burnt out by the game. If Smite 2 fails, I don't see myself coming back to this game. I should sub to your patreon just to force you to make nothing but arachne videos :p
But seriously, i am constantly baffled at hirezs business decisions. Smite was a goldmine, a 3rd person moba with easy to get into controls and pulling from various mythologies made it so most characters could be reconizable. This should have been big, but they jist co stantly failed at advertising, expanding, or capitalizing on it.
Now with smite 2 announced way too early, it just eats at the current smites playerbase and developers slowing the game down even more, and risks killing the entire thing. They should have waited a year to announce the game, or if anything just say its being worked on and we will show more in a year, and continue to make content for smite 1 in the meantime. Then start alpha of smite 2 with double the amount of the current alpha gods and more polished gameplay and modes.
I want to like smite 2, and i see a lot of potential, but its being pushed way too soon. For me as a main of a character thats probably not seeing her appear in smite 2 for maybe 2 or 3 years the game while cool and vastly inproved loses a lot of interest for me

I think a fun idea for Smite 2 would be to take a Mortal Kombat X approach and have multiple kits for each god, which would also allow every god to tap into abilities they had in their real life lore that didn’t make the initial cut in smite.
The Odin we currently have for example is an almost purely physical powerhouse, despite him also being the Norse god of magic (and many MANY other things). So after you lock into him for a game, you can then lock into a variant kit for him, one that’s his current, and another that leans into the more “god of magic” angle.

    Stu is gonna kill smite.
Not only did he drop the pro scene but he couldn't give us any tourneys to go off of so high end Smite is dead and interest is low due to exposure.
Next he wants to rush Smite 2 in a mediocre state when it's not fun and had many of the same problems smite 1 has/had like having 9.5 baked into the game as default. Plus it has its own set of problems with strength and intelligence in balance in gods and items. Why does Anubis wrap do strength DMG? Why does sol entire kit do intelligence DMG but her autos are pure strength based? They need to rethink how they base off those stats on most of the gods they have there now instead of spinning a wheel and choosing one or the other for every god.
Lastly they need to experiment with the game since it's a close alpha but by the looks of the last patch they did for smite 2 they think they already have the core gameplay down and are just doing mini balance changes like it's a completed game, but the core gameplay needs drastic changes and they refuse to experiment. We have 3 minute cool down beads but have the same cc durations as smite 1. They don't wanna lower it all to an universal say 1 second and see how that pans out. Beads has to be one of your items even tho we have asked if we can choose something like blink instead when the game starts but they don't listen and refuse to experiment so instead of this being an alpha to help them make a better game, they're just treating us game testers for bugs, since they think we don't know what we're talking about and we're crazy for wanting the game to be fun since in their eyes it's already perfect.

Beads is a get out of jail free and then you also get aegis invincibility. Beads should be an Item you build that you can pop on command but that will also take an inventory slot as price to get that crutch back. When beads is no longer everyones free crutch, you can then lower all hard cc down to justify it. But giving everyone Beads has always been fundamentally cancer hand holding.

I’m thinking Smite could do something that makes other MOBA developers try and ape IT…
How about a “RAGNAROK” mode where it’s 15V15 players on a supersized mashup of all the maps in the game (The basic foundation would be akin to conquest, the individual lanes would be structured like Slash, there would be ways to summon Juggernauts like siege, the center of the map would have a full sized Arena map where all the lanes meet up in the middle of, there would be health pickups like in assault, etc etc….
And THEN there could be some new twists like spending spare gold to buff the next minion wave of few in a lane, or that the specific mode would allow gods to buy _7 or more_ items instead of the standard 6, and/or that everyone starts out with additional CDR% similarly to some of Smite 1’s MOTD’s (with a matching MPS boost to keep up with the extra ability spam), and also an attack speed boost for gods that don’t use abilities as much… And so on and so forth…

TLDR: Predecessor feels better than Smite and Smite 2 because long CCs, Beads, and DR are dumb mechanics to build a MOBA around.
I was so excited for Smite 2, but as the development of Predecessor progressed, the Smite 2 playtests felt lacking.
Beads and DR are definitely the biggest differences. Beads has always been a feels bad on the attacker's side. I agree with FineOkay that it is anti-playmaking. Long CC is also annoying if you don't have beads up.
You throw your combo-starting CC, they use beads, you miss your combo because of it. You feel bad. In Pred, you are rewarded for hitting your CC by comboing off it, but the CC doesn't last as long, so you can't kit dump a helpless enemy.
If they don't have beads and you're playing Thor, they just die to ult and there's nothing they can do. Beads and long CCs lead to unsatisfactory fights on both sides.
DR is one of Hi-Rez's famous band-aid fixes to a large problem.

Maybe I'm just overly optimistic but I think people are being just a hair too doom and gloom. Could Smite 2 crash and burn? Sure it could. However, I don't really see Predecessor as true competition for Smite. That game peaked at about where Smite 1 is now and it has continued to trend downward. That was already a dead game resurrected once. I just don't think it's a game that has staying power.
I'm also not on the Deadlock hype train either. Sure it's Valve... but they haven't made a game in so long. That and the way the AAA game space is these days. I just don't have faith in large game companies. I'm also just not a believer in the shooter/moba hybrid game. It's been tried multiple times and failed over and over. I just don't think that is a gametype that is going to work. Shooters aren't Moba fans (in general) and Moba fans are shooter fans (again in general). There is of course some bleed over but I don't think enough and I don't see the genre appealing enough to both sides. This is all of course my own opinion and I could be totally wrong haha :)

Had HiRez not had so many flops over the years we probably wouldn't be as concerned as a fan base as we are right now.
Stew had a tweet a while back if I'm remembering correctly and he was talking about all the things the team had learned while working on all those games that didn't make it. Each one allowed them to learn something and that is good to see. I work in video/animation myself and I fail to make stuff I like all the time. It's through those that I learn the most and improve my craft. I also DM some D&D and every campaign is a learning experience. Where I screw something up then learn so my next campaign is better.
I see that as the case with Smite 2 as well. They've got a lot of experience under their belts. I think HiRez has a stronger development team than many give them credit for. We just need to let them cook. IMO

Pardon me while I vent my frustrations with the situation of smite and smite 2 at the moment. And I will note that smite 2 is fun and has potential but..
Hard agree, smite 2 at a minimum feels at least a year away from a solid beta game. There simply isn’t enough in it for long term commitment. God changes are cool and so is the item system, but this doesn’t feel enough to keep me playing for years let alone months of playtime into the game.
Poor smite 1, the 9.5 revert feels like a bandage solution to a clear self made problem. Very little changes have come to smite 1 so far to justify playing it. The game is over 10 years old and is still fun, but nothing fresh or interesting has come out almost halfway into the year (other than 9.5 really). No new gods, almost no map changes, and no new features like game modes. Combine this with no SPL, and even ranked feels more hallow then ever.
Smite 2 feels less like a sequel and more smite UE5 at the moment. Obviously it is still in alpha and has room to grow. But the time scale they have given doesn’t give me comfort, how much can you really change in a few months with what is here? I personally want a fresh new smite that is a clear evolution from what we have. Not “smite UE5 a work in progress”.
Thanks for the read and again I am mostly venting my frustrations of the current state of smite and smite 2. I just want smite 2 to be the best it can be and at the moment it feels too far away from that goal with both games suffering in the interim.

Call me crazy, but I feel like ALL gods should be ready at launch. Not implemented here and there as we go. The OW community sits back and takes any piece of crumb blizzard gives them and other company’s have taken notice. Sequels used to mean we’re getting a completely finished game, not something half thrown together and completed later. Just how battle passes are the norms in a lot of games. Half finished games called “sequels” will be the norm as well. Mark my words. We’ve seen it with OW 2 and now with Smite 2.

One of, if not the biggest problem outside the rushed development, is that they're basically porting Smite 1 almost 1:1 to Smite 2. Smite 1 problems are now in Smite 2; there's a lack of a proper tutorial, or good autobuild recommendations. There's no incentive to learn from mistakes in Smite 1 and improve in Smite 2. And the biggest mistake they've made with Smite 1 is how awful it is for the new player experience.
Take for example Predecessor; it's in open-beta now, so it might not be a fair comparison, but one of the things I LOVED about Predecessor is that it has an amazing tutorial guide, recommendation builds, and characters all synergize with their own kits super well. They have starters that encourage the playstyle for the role you have; they filter out characters that fit great for the role you want, but don't force you to play those; they also have arrows and guides to help you get started on the map.
Smite is severely lacking when it comes to the new player experience. Update after update has been pandering to pros and veterans. Please, for the health of game, focus on new players and the overall fun, and not in satisfying old time players who, yes they are loyal and supportive, but are severely biased on what is best for the future of the game. 9.5 revert was an example of that, and as someone who hated burst meta before 9.5, and hate burst meta now with the revert, I've uninstalled Smite and don't plan on playing it again until they address those core gameplay issues.
Pro balance and play is important, but remember, it's the casual playerbase that primarily plays; pros just motivate casuals like us to get better and play better. They're not the standard, they are the goal.

Do you know how many people didnt know about the interact key? Or which lane to go to? A lot. A tutorial is very important no matter what stage the game is in. The base game will be the same no matter what. 3 lanes, primary objectives, secondary objectives, farm wave, kill gods, take the titan, that's it.
Also, you obviously did not play the alpha. The number of folks who didnt know how to play or went to the wrong lane was baffling. Anyone can get into the alpha if they purchase the founders pack. So basically, someone who has never played Smite or a MOBA can purchase the founders pack and opt into the Alpha. I find sequels to multiplayer games like Smite and Overwatch unnecessary. Why not just fix what is already there?

    • @Omegeddon

Overwatch 2 was unnecessary. We need smite 2 tho. Smite is on a 20 year old engine and still uses adobe flash. They cant keep duct taping that garbage forever

I haven't played smite 2 and don't intend to until it releases but I've watched a lot of input from pros and what not and also gameplay.
To me it doesn't feel like s2 fixes fundamental problems that s1 has. Even though it improves the gods from what we've seen so far.
Smite was always very limited when it came to things like wave manipulation, rotations etc compared to other mobas. Playing smite always felt like the map wasn't very well designed from a competitive aspect they widened the map and it feels like it still has no impact for example because of things like a) too many champs that can bypass walls ,jump over them etc b) move speed of characters even without dedicated boot items.
At the same time they add things from other mobas that doesn't make sense like plate gold. Smite already had a way better passive gold income than other mobas and it feels plate gold is another of these things that encourage the gameplay to get worse. It's an Extra incentive for laners to do nothing from fear of losing their own plates or gaining enemy plates. It encourages even more the boring lane state of s1.
It feels they did not understand the fundamental problems that s1 had

As you already mentioned, 9.5 revert basically fixed smite flat out & made it fun again.
Had they reverted sooner, they could’ve prolonged the life or Smite 1 a little further & cooked Smite 2 in the oven longer.
As it is now, Smite 2 is very lukewarm & undercooked. You can see the framework of a good cake, but it is NOT ready for a 24/7 release.
I honestly think, this will seriously hurt the game in the long run, by turning a lot of people off.

It’s sad because it’s my favorite game, but they might have completely killed the game & it would be COMPLETELY a top level mistake.
Top level poor choices on game mechanics in smite 1 & top level mistakes on Smite 2’s development/release schedule.

In the 9.5 they made everyone super tanky long story short. They reverted that so squishies are squishy again & tanks aren't full on brick walls that still hit like cannonballs.

You can finally gank a mage, kit dump, and not have to watch them walk away with half to a third of their HP still there.

With the 9.5 revert i enjoy smite1 so much and dont even want smite 2. smite 2 just feels wird, the damage numbers are awful, movement feels odd, the UI/HUD is awful (item bar being a staight line instead of a 2x3), the high grass is to much, new camps system is awful (the buffs are fine, but only 1 speed, no buff after first kill aint it), no item builder/ pre-build is terrible (def wont attract new player), current gods are awful and boring (+ why tf bring 2 new mages into the alpha, why not a warrior and mage, or assasin mage, why 2 mages), map is way to small, side line is terrible, not only do i have to worry to get camped fom high grass now maybe someone is camping at the sidelines as well, only 1 ward is probably the worst feature, consumables taking away a item slot makes also 0 sense

side note: smite2 is less "new player" friendly then smite1, its easier a new player to get into smite1 then smite2, so currently smite2 isnt a great catch for new players. And since smite has a lager community on console then on pc because smite is basiclly the only moba on console its important to attract console players. But noooowww with valorant finally dropping on console and their current beta is basiclly a perfect finished game where you wont even tell its a beta a lot of console players will try out valorant "beta" fall in love and not bother try smite2's awful un-new player friendly alpha. So i think hi-rez needs to put in the work, otherwise their bigger community, console, will fall apart

SMITE 2 doesn't have to replace SMITE 1 right away. It just needs to be sustainable and have enough interest to survive until all of the gods are ported, it's fine if more players are going to keep playing the original for a while.

3 Problems with Smite and its not looking good at all.
    1) 9.5 Killed the game. All the hype died. Became stale. Matches took longer than ever. The bandaid patch to revert the 9.5 changes came TOO LATE.
    2) Smite 2 announced way too early. The roster is laughable and nobody wants to play mirror matches over and over. No progression. Game will get stale REALLY fast.
    3) Smite 1 has no more content, thus remaining playerbase can only hold out for so long before other games (Valves new game and Predecessor.) come online and start permanently taking the remaining playerbase. They already poaching or coercing big Smite streamers to come play their game, get them involved...

I am worried for Smite 2. Mostly because their lack of innovation on charachters in favor of just bloating them. In addtion of the pure fear in my heart over TTK being made shorter than it was in the last Alpha.

I will say though that a lot of the gods that got tweaked feel MUCH better than in Smite 1. Replacing Zeus’s current shield toss for that new ability is real nice, especially since I can stack it with those 2 items that boost CDR% and movement speed. With the right build, Smite 2 Zeus can move faster than about any other god in the game.

@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire Oh some tweaks and changes are fine and fun. However Hades was just made bloated. He needed a full rework rather than a few bloating tweak. Save the healing part that was more QoL than anything. Then Anhur's ult change was fine but he hardly neededs buffs. Things are what they are.
