New Edition and New Kids wasn't to target black or white kids. Each of these groups had black fans and white fans and all color fans! The goal was never to cater to a specific color over the other, but it was more of a marketing strategy for the producer to make money from white kids who sound black. It worked. To make race the main goal is to cause division though, because it was not intended to be a race issue.

They sold a majority of their records from 86-94, I believe the 15 Million number was US only, they were at at least 50 million worldwide by the end of 1990, including singles. Their first 4 albums from 86-90 sold about 40 Million worldwide, not including singles. They were a nonentity in terms of sales from 94 onwards however

I don't know if it was 1989, but I mean that 1 year that they beat those other artists and won the Grammy Awards over them. They even presented the Grammy Awards to some artists as well
