Early in the morning is the best part of the day.
Truth.
Great tutorial! I will definitely be trying this technique soon! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful black crappie!! Awesome job!!
Great info on a lost art my grandpa taught me as a kid and I think him for it everyday u just gained a subscriber your depth in this video on how to get em was perfect 👍🏽 one of the best
Cheers to you and your grandfather! Let’s keep this lost art alive! Thanks buddy 🎣
Thanks for the knowledge and wisdom you share.
I love early mornings.they are the best 😅
As for Rodgers comment about early morning being the best part of the day.
Actually the best time is any time you can get there in my opinion.
I am 3 weeks away from turning 88 years of age.
I dont get up at 5 A M anymore except for bathroom trips.
I as a rule arrive at my favorite lake about 11 A M.
Till i launch my 14’ Jon boat and get my beach umbrella in place, and all other things all set it will be about 11.30 till i start fishing.
Five hours is about all i can take before i start feeling a bit tired.
And i still have to load my boat and drive 25 miles back home.
Since late October when the temps came down ive made 39 of those type trips.
So far, 660 Specks have made it into my boat, and i dont count the ones that didnt get into my boat.
And thats just Specks, again i dont count others.
So far, all have been released, after the spawn ill start keeping a few.
So as Richard Gene says, go when you can, or im my case when i feel like going.
I will admit that early or late in the day has advantages, but that might be over exaggerated a bit in my opinion.
Most important is to live in a place where the fishing is very good, then follow the advice you find on videos such as this.
My dad says the same, go when you can! Love me some Richard Gene, guy's a wealth of information. I hope I'm still out there jiggin' up specks when I'm 88! Hats off you, good sir.
Great video! I have to try it!
Love the vids man!! Just got in to the jigging over here on the East Coast. Its a blast for sure!!
Thank you so much! It is so much fun!
Thank you so much for the tips.
Very nice I enjoyed the video thanks
Excellent tutorial. Definitely looks like a fun way to catch specks.
Thanks man!
You do it the same way fishing offshore. Whether drifting a reef or section of water or dropping over a wreck. Your just using bigger baits. Sometimes they like it slow sometimes they like it fast. That’s fishing. Great tutorial great video.
Awesome video
Enjoyed the video, really like that live well.
I have found that in places where there are weed beds such as where you are fishing, the fish will be there all year long.
By and large there is little other structure for them and also the baitfish to relate to in many of the shallow lakes here in Florida.
I have watched hours of videos by others as well, Richard Gene for example never fishes weed beds, primarily because there arent any where he fishes. So his technique matches the location where he fishes, as you said.
On the other hand Whitey Outlaw primarily fishes weed beds all year long, again he fishes in shallow water and ive heard him say they have no other place to go.
I personally prefer fishing for Specks the same way as you do, but i lack the patience to sit in one spot very long.
What surprises me is that i dont see very many others doing it, including in your videos.
Ive had Kayakers paddle up to me and ask what im doing and using for bait.
My response is that they can see what im doing, and ive even given a few of them a jig like im using.
But you know what, they just paddle off and continue doing what they were doing which is casting.
So there is no doubt that we do what matches our personal traits for the most part.
Another thing is that any thing that swims will take a jig.
But you wont catch many Crappies by using bass lures.
Well said! And hey, more for us!
Fantastic video. This is “masterclass” level content.
Wow! Thanks man that means a lot! 🎣
@@brentallenoutdoorsfl Headed out to Kissimmee tomorrow. The "bump." Got it:)
Caught a couple today with this advice. Do you think the fish prefer being around dollar weed?
If you can find clumps of dollar grass around cattails or other mixed vegetation, that’s what I’d target. This is prime spawn right now so they love cover
I went out today to lake Jessup and the St. Johns halfway to lake Monroe... I caught one slab crappie in lake Jessup behind an island and spent the rest of the day swimming the jig around hydrilla. Not a single bite. I'm wondering if the cold front had something to do with it? Or, maybe they don't like the fast current.
Very nice
Great video thanks . How do you keep your crappie from being mushy when fried? Catch , clean, cook, video at some point?
I only notice that they seem overly flaky (sometimes mushy consistency) when they're fresh caught and not iced down before filleting. Personally I prefer specks iced down for at least a day before cleaning and then eaten. They're such a delicate, flaky fish that when they're super fresh they lack the body and form they get after they've been chilled for a while. I've got more CCCs in the pipeline as well!
Thanks for the lesson in vertical jigging. Where did you get the fish counter?
Thanks for watching! Counter you can check out at CatchCounter.com. I also have a review I just posted previous to this one if you want more info.
Good video Brent, I use a very similar style to how you fish here. Do you ever pitch , then swim the jig using the same jig pole ? If not try it.
You’ll probably double your catch when they want it moving.
I do actually! Not as often as basic vertical style, though. Just depends where I’m fishing. Pitching is fun when they’re on fire!
Cool video!
Thanks!
Where can you get a cooler like? I've never seen a lid like that.
Excellent tips and techniques. Do you mind sharing which lake you’re fishing?
Thanks! I’m this video I’m on the Withlacoochee
Is that the 44 bridge in the background?
I really enjoyed this video! First time viewer on your channel. What is that rig you got on the cooler for the fish?
Thanks for watching! The chute on top is called the CatchCounter:

Great content…thanks for sharing!
Where did you get your tool to pull holes in the weeds?
Thank you! That tool we actually made, but we’re working on revising it so it’s lighter and easier to manage. And may put some up for sale in the future.
Yeah, I looked at a few telescopic poles and other materials at Home Depot and Lowe’s. It’s pretty easy to assemble, thanks.
Really helpful tutorial, I'm really thinking about getting into speck fishing. What would you say in Central Florida are the best months for this technique?
December through April, I’d say.
@@brentallenoutdoorsfl thanks for responding 👍
Are you able to catch them like this in the winter time or do you find they move out of the grass deeper?
Absolutely. Each lake is kinda different, but January through April is prime spawning in the more shallow cover
Love your cooler chute. Self made or product?
Thanks! The schute is the CatchCounter. I did another video on it if you want more info: czcams.com/video/sBTXk8gl-KE/video.html
Nice black crappie what size jighead and how deep were you jigging
Thanks! I typically fish a 1/16 about 2.5-3ft deep
Your right jig fishing is better than minnow fishing because it's a lot cheaper than having to keep buying minnows and keeping them alive with a bucket and a aerator I mean a quarter lb of minnows doesn't even last me a day and it's 8 dollars a quarter lb where I fish at lake Wright patmam in texas Iso jig fishing is probably a lot cheaper but I just haven't got the technique down yet hopefully I will someday I have only caught 2 last week on jigs the rest of the 11 on minnows so minnow fishing is easier but more costly
You make a good point about the price of minnows nowadays. I'll still pick some up on occasion, but sometimes they'll be sold out and that's just another thing to deal with. I still love spider riggin' some cane poles with minnows, though!
Where in the world did you find that fantastic fish cooler with the built in fish chute? Any chance you could give me the name or put in a link? First time stopping by. I loved your video. Tight lines Captain. 🐟🐟🐟
Thanks so much for watching! The fish counter I talk more about here if you're interested: czcams.com/video/sBTXk8gl-KE/video.html
who makes that contraption on top of the fish cooler? I am 79 and fish by myself. that would save many steps back and forth to put fish in!
That's called a CatchCounter. I did a full review on it if you'd like more info: czcams.com/video/sBTXk8gl-KE/video.html
What kind of reel is on your rod I would like one?
That would be the B'n'M BAN01
I have the same rod and same length. What reel do you have on yours? I bought a spinning reel for mine. But like you said, it doesn’t make sense because there’s no reason to reel it in. What’s the type and name brand you’re using?
I’m using the BAN01 by B’n’M
Thank you and I love the tips on how to use the 11 foot rod
Just heard Florida
I would have had to hop off the boat when that Tom gobbled 😅
Where did you get that drop in for your ice chest?

how deep is this type of water ? i got a bay boat, is it shallow ?
Usually 2.5ft to 5ft
Thank you. What's the name and model of your reel?

@@brentallenoutdoorsfl thank you sir
what is that cooler you have??
Regular cooler with a CatchCounter. I did a video on it if you’re interested in checking it out:

What state? Where did you get that cooler with the flap top to keep the crappie? Never seen that before.
I'm in Florida. The fish counter is called the CatchCounter: czcams.com/video/sBTXk8gl-KE/video.html
29:30’ish. FWC nonstop spraying our lakes is what causes that!!!!!!!
I'm in Bay county, what county are you in?
Logger John
Citrus
Whats the rod and reel your using?
11ft ACC Crappie Stix with a BAN01 reel by BnM
What lake are you fishing
This is on the Withlacoochee River
What state are you fishing in?
Florida
I noticed you’re catching a lot of black crappie. Is there any particular reason for this?
It’s prime time for the Crappie spawn. So that’s primary what I’m targeting while jigging.
@@brentallenoutdoorsfl Plus no white crappie in florida!
what type of chest is that and where can I find one?
It's called the CatchCounter: czcams.com/video/sBTXk8gl-KE/video.html
Fishing is very opinionated
What works for crappie is very opinionated
Great video
Where I live they is no places nothing like that here so it does not interest me but good luck to you
Why are the fish so black?
It’s due to the tannins in the river where I’m fishing. Water is very dark and stained.
