I really enjoy this "class room" format - keeps me involved and focused.
I bought several drawing tutorials etc and found that most of them are just drawing demos.. ultimately I will come back to FZD channel to learn fundamentals. I really appreciate that you are taking precious time to share your knowledge (and very useful, detailed knowledge indeed in my view) without any expectation. I only wish I were younger and more talented enough to sign up for your school.. but maybe in another life.. :) For now, I whet my interest in devouring whatever you are putting out on this channel. Thank you very much, Mr Feng Zhu!
Right!?!?!? I did the same, bought a bunch of gumroad tutorials from famous concept artists and the majority of them only show fancy techniques and not the fundamentals or design core.
@@Faltz013 outside of Feng, go with Scott Robertson, his first video is 2 hours drawing lines and ellipses in perspective
I don't mind at all the longer format. If it takes 2-3 hours to explain what you need to explain, then take all the time you need dude. When Design Cinema hits the CZcams notifications, it always takes the top priority. Best art content definitely on the internet. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing free professional knowledge! I spent tens of thousands of dollars for a multimedia degree that did not even teach me 1/4 of what was said here. Wish I had these videos to learn from two decades ago... To the younger generation of artists, listen to what he's preaching here; because it's exactly what you will look back on 10 years from now and realize every word he's saying about the formula is the truth!!!
Dude, i swear im asking myself how to compose my environnement when you video was realese; your a genius !
Same here! I love him
Hi Feng. I saw you the first time 14 years ago in Attack of the Show. Your artwork changed my life. I always come back to your lessons and work to keep me grounded because it's so engaging. After 12 years and some random luck, I got a job as an Art teacher abroad. I always tell people about you. As a teacher, I know feedback is important, so I'm just one more person letting you know that your work is greatly appreciated.
dude don't apologise for the wait between them, youre one of the hardest working people I can think of and they're always worth the wait :)
MASTER IS BACK!!
I find myself coming back to this channel every few years and every time I learn something new
Thanks, Feng! It shows how passionate you are that when you have free time you choose to share it with us.
It's a beautiful day whenever FZD posts a new video. Thanks for your continued generosity, Feng! No other channel goes in-depth like FZD does.
i have now a job as a concept artist, and i say hands down, you are main main source of information
about the field
I'm having a hard time seeing your horizon line that high at 1:12:33 . It looks like it would be lower. More at the character's hips. Maybe it's the compression of the lines on the ground, but it just looks like we're looking more up. Or maybe it's my eye, and I need to work on it more.
It is actually lower, you re right, it's pretty easy to see, in the middle ground at the towerish thing on the right, it has some kind of rectangular thin platform, you can see that the bottom lines of that platoformy rectangular thing are actually a straight line and having the top lines converging a bit down so it means they the horizon line is there
I kept thinking the same thing, that it should be around the hips or slightly lower even. Was hoping someone else in the comments would bring it up.
Same with the top image, right? The horizon should be at the female character's hips (at the environmental horizon). And in both cases the scale feels a little confusing as a result, unless the camera is crouched down looking up slightly
This has been one of the best tutorials from you. Its like watching a movie! Great job Feng! You are such a hero!
I was wandering around for 3 years trying to find a way to set my way to prepare an impactful portfolio. This course cleared up my mind because I want to become an environment artist. I do characters either but I wanna build a career on environment. And today I am enlightened by this course thanks so much.
Hello Feng! You are such an inspiration for me ! I admire your passion to produce amazing art and to share what you know with others. Currently I am diving deep in music production but I am following you since a while now and as a illustrator/concept artist myself I will be able to use your precious tips and insights to draw. Thank you for your authenticity and respect! All the best for you and your family during these troubled times.
Amazing! You know why I have been following this channel for so long? because it is clear content explained in a normal and informative manner. There is no bullshit, overexcited voice or ADHD egomaniac crazy host. This is the type of content people need. Thank you!
Anytime a video from you comes I hang on to every word. It is so hard to find good, true professional advice so these videos mean the world.
Thanks for posting this Feng, I recently had my first concept art class for environments and really struggled through it and the idea of doing thumbnails. I appreciate you putting such valuable info out here for us artists in training.
These are super helpful! I would love to see Feng paint again though, watching him paint live is always such a treat
Thank you Feng Zhu! Thank you for squeezing out your precious time and still recording these very helpful and valueble tutorials for the public! You are really awesome! And you are the best! I really hope that I could become someone like you one day. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
This was very timely. I was just deliberating the finer issues of composition and perspective. Thanks
Seeing an FZD video in my feed makes my entire day/week/month!
Thank you Feng for all your wonderful videos ! X🤘🏻X
OMG I'm sooo exited! Love the series.
You let the people fly master!!Thanks for your time and huge work to do this, to share it for free!Amazing...that's like dreaming awake!
This channel has been a true gold mine for me; it has served as an amazing source of inspiration, motivation, and most of all knowledge. Thank you so much Feng
Hey i love your videos and how you go into every little thing thanks sooooooo much
1:25:30 "I know this guy is working on baldur's gate 3"
EDIT: This video was extremely helpful. I was stuck for a bit. Once I implemented this, I was able to get the ball rolling again.
Thank you so much for doing these. I honestly feel like I'm in some kind of secret club learning from a legend like you. Like I'm normally supposed to climb on top of the highest mountain to find your small hut and beg you for 3 years to teach me.
Every episode is just so enlighting. Thank you, my mind is expanding to new wonderful horizons!
yesss
Amazing video. This long, classroom format is the very best.
Wow thank you so much!
listening to this while making thumbnail studies from movie stills, WAS SUCH A POWERFUL LESSON!
Love the long format btw.
Thanks for posting it is a real help to all of us who can not afford to attend your school again thans and all the best
At about 1h10m, you are talking about the horizontal line. You draw the horizontal line at eye hight. Thats not true. The actual line is at the charcter waist, because the viewers eye (camara position) is at sitting position, and the view is tilted up. In photographic sense, this is called frog perspective (the opposite of bird’s eye perspective). Another way to see if you are on the horizontal line: If you can look upon a horizontal plane, that plane is below the horizontal line. If you can’t, it’s above. In the picture, you can’t see the horizontal planes of the big sculptures, so the horizontal line is a bit below these planes.
I have never been so interested in someone counting to 3, Great content!
I was just waiting damn btw your words helped me a lot to self taught myself Feng. i actually improved thanks !
This was incredibly informative, hope you and your staff are staying safe!
Plot Twist: "Our Tourist is an Assassin"
finally my birds eye view expertise
Thanks a lot for these videos ..These are super helpful! I watch them over and over again to clear my doubts..thanks
2 questions:
1. How do you force a wider angle? Make the vanishing points closer to each other?
2. Why is the visible horizon line lower than the mathematical horizon line?
Thanks again! For students from Argentina this i'ts very helpful!
This was a wonderful comparison of the effect of lenses as it pertains to capturing reference material.
41:27 can't believe you used my little Town of "Najac" as a reference ! It's in south of France it has a nice castle in deed, thank you for this episode
can i like... can i like donate or pay you or something? this knowledge is amazing and frankly, i cannot BELIEVE this is out here for free. so happy i live in a generation of modern technology/social media where artists share their knowledge so readily and for free. i'm only 20 but older artists have made it very clear that even 10 years ago, the amount of tutorials online we have rn are INSANE
I love these so much, please never stop!
Thanks for coming back! Your stuff is so inspirational please keep it coming!
非常感谢,学到了很多
this was a great help, you really explained this concept well and like you said i was starting to notice that composition trend in most pieces and even scenes in movies. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
Thank you!
Im learning loads and loads with your videos. Thank you so mich
Thanks a lot for this Master!
Thank you Feng!! Love these!
Thank you for all your work making this videos for us!
Loving your vibe its really motivational. Every video released gets me really pumped to do more homework. Thanks for the free tutorials, it really helps for folks like me.
thank you so much !! ill pray for u for sharing ur knowledge with us!!!!!!
I actually used to work in Disney Star Wars land 😅 (galaxy’s edge)
The horizon line in the image is actually human eye level because the entire falcon sits on a pedestal. I think R2-D2 was just really close to the difference between the viewer’s high and the pedestal!
I just found this channel, and this is absolutely AMAZING. thank you for sharing your knowledge~
Amazing episode! Im going to rewatch it a couple of times for sure. Thank you for posting all this great videos on youtube!
Thanks for the great lesson. You have gained a new sub.
Thank you so much for making these episodes!
pure gold as always! Thank you Feng.
This lesson improve me alot. Can't wait next fundamental video.
Thank you, this was extremely informative and helpful. Really appreciate you taking the time to share this knowledge.
thank you for your hardwork! I'm learning so much from your videos. Pls take care of yourself, especially admist this covid 19 situation
i needed this alot, thank you very much!
Thank you for making the time.
We need you now please upload more. Thank you for doing this
as always thank you Seng for incredible and extremely valuable content!
Thank you so much !
just a very big thank you for this episode
Thanks so much for this video
1:12:20 I'm not sure I understand this part. Shouldn't those perspective lines intersect at the horizon line? Here, it seems they would intersect way below it...
Bruh im confused too, hope someone will explain that
ikr? Same here 1:14:24 , horizon line would be somewhere near to knees of those people, to get that low angle shot to see dragons bottom. His horizon with vanishing point would still works, but... i don't know :D Even that "camera" is not on hight of those people so horizone can't be there, or?
I loved that. My head is saying 1, 2, 3 all the time now :)
About time we got a new episode :) thanks Feng.
I was first scared of almost 2 hour long stream just like some other art talks. But this is really helpful. I am so much now into FZD....really thank you. Understanding composition without so many guidelines like "Rule of third"...which is nowadays fake because of "Dynamic Symmetry". Then we have "Directional Lines" and many like these. We beginners get so much confused which one to use and why. But this one was really simple 3-method rule. I really liked it. Thank you for your contribution to art community.
Will be waiting for more uploads. so much blessings from India.
good stuff, as always
Does anyone knows were I can find the grids he shows at 1:41:17 in high res?
Finally
Insane learning thank a lot ! :D
Priceless! I cannot thank you enough.
“They pay you to play the game not dribble the ball.” ❤️
Just a question, will you do more podcast version of Design Cinema like you did a few years ago? Of course I love the video version but the podcast one was great as well and it's my understanding that it was easier (or at least faster) to make.
I seem to remember that you mentioned something about the possibility to branch out a little bit more with topics about production, budget, and so on (so not strictly concept art but very much related), I would love to see those topics covered, even if just in podcast form.
Thanks again for all your video, they are always amazing! :D
nocturneJOJO i think it’s finding topics that haven’t been talked about before. Otherwise it’s just the same podcast as the other ones he’s done.
@@marcuskeil420 I agree, that's why I mentioned the other topics he said he might talk about if we're interested (I am of course), also those are less reliant on visual inputs unlike drawing lessons so it's even better for a podcast. :)
He's alive!
Thank you so much, these videos helped me a lot.
indonesia thankyou for you
Love to classroom format
OMG another episode! Hope everything's OK for you Feng
Hey thanks so much for doing these videos. They are extremely helpful. One question I have for a future video: What advice do you have for presenting your work? When you present your creature concepts or thumbnails, what are some key tips you have to make them read easily etc.
Thanks and looking forward to seeing more!
Also if you have time: Assuming a person has fundamentals/perspective down, When or what stages to use line-work VS when to use a more loose painting style? I know it's a sort of vague question but I'm sure I'm not the only one struggling with that distinction.
YESSSS LET'S GOOOO WOOOOOOOOO!!! YAYAYAYA FENG ZHUUUUUU!!!!
Rule 01: Be a tourist. Don't fly with camera around.
Michael Bay left the chat.
wow what a find, well worth the wait. thank you.
Thanks
I looooooove so much when we treat fundamentals. There is always something new to learn or mistakes to recognize :)
very helpfull imformation sir thank you again
when it comes to field of view, i get that having a wider field of view would better show the body of an object you're trying to sell, but you could retain the exact same amount of information in the frame with a wider lens just having the picture taken from more distance right? why not use a wider lens from further away while keeping the same objects in the frame?
