3:58 He is holding a wet bulb relative humidity meter, which tells you what the level of humidity is in the ambient air of the room. This is not a surface indicating moisture meter. That would be cause for alarm. Simply paying attention to what tools the inspector uses/has should be indication enough of whether or not they are educated to provide you with correct information.

This really reminds me the episode of King of Hill when Hank's insurance company send a mold inspector to inspect his home only for the mold inspector to do unnecessary tests and damage to his home just to scam Hank.

When I get estimates on Anything, roof repair, water heater/furnace needed, masonry.. etc.. I always get at least 7 or 8 estimates.. they are Free consultations !.. why not !.. it's amazing the differences.. but you will be able to tell at a certain point what the truth is.. & you learn a lot too!

Estimates doesn't test anything they just tell you how much a inspection will cost? So that doesn't really help.

    Fraud:
    1. Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.
    2. A person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities.
So why are these men not getting charged or fined or even their licenses taken away?
Would this not be considered illegal?

It's a damm shame I am a licensed inspector and I pride myself on advanced and honest inspections These guys are a joke I mean look at their uniforms Well they're not even wearing uniforms They don't even look trustworthy I hate it when people make my trade look dishonest Especially indoor air quality which is very important.

Any chance you could answer some questions. Air pumps that suck air in to then send for lab results, how are those more effective than Petri dishes?
I was told a Petri dish will always show mold but obviously I can send them to a lab to see if there is any bad mold. I was then told it won’t tell me what’s active or mold from years ago. I don’t get it, if there is bad mold then I can look for it, unless they wanna tear down my walls how can they find it?
Also air testing, mold only create spores that spread during high humidity right? So wouldn’t it make sense to test for spore on higher humidity versus a cold dry winter of 20 %humidity? Especially with humidity testing devices? I was told a dry climate won’t matter for testing the air of spores, I don’t get it.
I was also told ozone won’t fix mold issues but as far as I know ozone will destroy mold it touched and it’s spores, I was told it would only make problems worse.
I’m considering putting holes in walls and getting a borescope myself, is that unsafe? Would I expose myself to an issue that way?

we always start with an investigation cut 6in x 6in unless the hygienist has it in his scope of work.. lol flashlight and extension mirror is all you need. You may have to remove some insulation to get a clear view a simple behind the base board check is easy to do as well. If mold is detected We start with a 2ft high cut in the recommended area then inspect the rest before cutting any higher unless the inspector states the exact cut hight and width. Most good inspectors will do that

These kinds of business practices go on everywhere& in a lot of different industries! It makes getting ahead really challenging for the little guy or gal! And when I do in vision finally getting a degree, something i can love doing, make enough to sustain my family, find work, a carrier I could be proud of,,, I imagine it's going to take me more than 8hrs, 8days, weeks, or even months! I would expect in this particular carrier choice to take a minimum of 1yr before your qualified to enter a beautiful residence like one of the ones in this show, and diagnose a problem that will cost thousands of dollars to fix! Why is anyone able to become certified for such a serious position, after such a small amount of time spent training!? These are for the majority of folks, the largest investments in their lives! And already cost so much to maintain, only to have some shady characters come along and invent costly home repairs in their minds, so they can justify ripping folk off for their hard earned cash! It would be such a challenge getting to that point, only to find con artists and such, looking for ways to get a hold of something that isn't rightfully earned, and not theirs!!

Our problem started with a water softener. It clogged the pipes when it busted with sand. They didn't check the sink. 2 months later after spending over $2000.00 to fix and get a whole new water softener; a leak caused major water damage under the kitchen sink that could have been caused when the water softener went. I do remember they did NOT check the kitchen sink but can't prove it. Now there's mold removal that needs to be done. Calling them tomorrow to see what the new plumbing bill is going to be.

There are no real regulations that govern mold inspectors. Unfortunately, any person with a one day course and a harbor freight tool box can be a Mold Inspector. And if that person is a hustler and can talk, he can be extremely dangerous. That should be the real lesson to take away from this program. These people make $Million dollar decisions but have the education and licensing standards of a kids neighborhood lemonade stand. Not to mention that since MOST are home-based businesses, they are usually people with less than stellar backgrounds and some are felons (ex or current). Then, you have conflict of interest where they come detect mold, clean it up, and then give their own work a clearance cert. lol Dont even get me started on change orders...for example, they quote you $950 for what is detected. they come in and establish containment and set up negative air pressurization therein. Then, they rip off walls and come back out of the containment and state the problem is worse than they thought. They show you digital photos of moldy panels and say it would take $XXXX more to remove the mold. When they finally finish removal, they charge you for the clearance inspection $XXX. Once clearance is given, they will then give you another quote for replacing and rebuilding the walls etc which is an addtional $XXXX. Finally, there is the upsell of larger floor tiles or upgraded paint or hard wooden floors or specialty carpets, cabinets, or whatever extras (which believe it or not, most people end up upgrading)...the costs will then end up being in the 10s of thousands of dollars. And it all started with a small (sometimes) free inspection and a small $950 quote. Yes people, there are some shady companies out there!!

Here in Maine, we've had four mold remediation "experts" visit our site and not one of them has what we believe to be a full grasp of the problem nor do they inspect/test in any real thorough manner. They just look for obvious surface signs of mold and that's it. And I think they try to boggle your mind with scientific jargon most don't understand.

These bums give good inspectors a bad name. We work with 4 INDEPENDENT indoor hygienist. They give us a scope of work but never tell us what type of post testing they will do which we like because it ensures we cover all basis air and visual. We remove affected areas hand scrub all wood in that area spray with anti fungal cleaner..and post treat the wood with a fungastat which keeps mold from coming back for 7-10 years. We hepa vac the entire containment..fog the air with a non chemical peroxide base completely wipe the entire containment wipe again. the whole process is contained with air scrubbers running at all times. We are the best in the remediation field. #AdvancedEnvironmental Torrance Ca
