  • This video presents a progressive step by step approach to vice alignment (vice tramming, vice truing) using a dial indicator. A properly installed vice is the cornerstone of a successful project and is the first thing to learn and master about milling. The objective of my videos is to introduce novice machinists to accurate work techniques so they are mostly directed towards new or aspiring machinists. Marc L'Ecuyer THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM

    Well said!

Thanks so much! This video is my proof! Often times other machinists question my method but I knew it could be indicated this way.. a test indicator would be more precise but not necessarily more accurate.

Thanks Marc, I enjoyed the tutorial, it's always useful to go back to first principles.
I hope you're well and the treatment is pogressing as planned.

words dont explain how thankful i am !!!!!!!! this video really really helped me this is a good introduction on how to use a miling machine i am struglling alot with engineering and especially miling machines i het so frustrated with it really drops my mood as i thought i was a hands on person but i was very very wrong, this is not in my interest but i have to do the work and as i said before these machines are more complicated when doing different tasks which means more knowlege that i meed to know hopefully i should be confident in what i am doing whilst watching all of your videos

Yet another informative, useful video. I had to take the additional step of removing the fixed jaw and lapping it flat. It wasn't. It took a while. I got it to read within a half a thou longitudinally all the way until about 20mm from the right end where it "dropped off" an additional 8 thou! It is an old vise and used. Perhaps one can just assume that a new vise has a perfectly flat, fixed jaw. Mine was not. In addition to your instructions I used Tom's Techniques (on CZcams) method of tapping while moving along the X-axis which made it a faster process. Thanks for this one.

The way you were teaching on the video is how I first learned. When I use a tool maker's vise I use a machinist square to square it to the table edge. Since the tool makers vise has square size, I can usually get it with 5 to 10 though that way.

Good video. As a poor novice I would love to see a step by step video on truing the bottom and top of a Chinese milling vise to parallel.

    Thanks Marc. Another useful video.
I have a 1236 lathe with a metric leadscrew, the thread indicating dial on my metric lathe has three gears, that can be selected to engage the lead screw, depending on the pitch of the the thread being cut. This thread chasing dail can only be used when cutting a metric thread, when cutting an imperial thread, the half nuts are left engaged and the lathe is reversed to return to the start position of each cut.
Have you any experience of this type of lathe? (Any chance of a tutorial?)

I found another method of alining the vise on the mill table. When indicate when the needle starts moving tap until it stops moving. I can get it done in one swipe that way, the follow up with a check swipe to verify. Works every time. It think "Tom's Techniques has a video on this.

Thanks Herb, the technique you suggest is a great one and I must admit that that is the way that I square a vice. The videos I produce are for beginners and wanting to keep things as simple as possible, I do not always present other options. There are a myriad of ways to align a vice and that is why comments such as your are so helpful. I love it when people write with good suggestions or to present a personal anecdote, it opens our eyes and helps everyone learn. Marc L'Ecuyer THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM

Thanks Mark, Another good video. I did just that operation this morning base on the instructions from your website, It is very precise. We must just take the time to do it.
    May I suggest another quicky....
How to true the head of the milling to the x and y axis table.
    Thanks again

The next planned video (not a little quicky) is about edgefindig and starts with a short demonstration on milling head truing. I hope to have the video done for next week. Marc L'Ecuyer THATLAZYMACHINIST.COM

Hi Mark This message has nothing to do with this video but an earlier one you posted. It was the one where you informed us about the closing of the dept you work in and the fact that it was minus 21. I was raised in Edmonton but was so fed up with the cold I moved to BC and now live on the Island. It's 8 degrees outside (but raining). I bet, if you want to get away from the white stuff, someone with your background would be welcomed with open arms in BC. Stay away from Vancouver (aka Lower Mainland) - too expensive. Nanaimo, Victoria, Courtenay or Campbell River would be an excellent place to live and good job opportunities.
Having said that my Brother - pushed by his wife - retired from Edmonton to Guelph and hates it.

Curious? Is your vice Jaw a known precision component? Enough to rely on versus indicating from the back of the vice itself? If that was a soft jaw I could see issues indicating from it and a lot of people probably have beat up jaws that won’t indicate well if dinged on the backside, etc...
