  • I picked up this little TV Yellow Epiphone “Junior” guitar with a bolt on neck with a single humbucker about a year ago. It has sat in one of my guitar racks ever since. I think I paid like $100 for it because the electronics were not working and at the time I thought I would mod it and give it to a friend who plays in bands locally. I love buying non-functioning guitars and bringing them back to working order. Very satisfying.
The other day I finally pulled it out of the rack and typed in the serial number to see what I could find out about it. Basically, I was interested in the year it was made.
It was made in 2011. After examining the guitar though, I noticed the fretboard does not look like Indian Laurel. I continued doing my research and found that it was an early version of the inexpensive line of Epiphone “Junior” guitars. The fretboard is indeed Rosewood instead of Indian Laurel. Also, the body and the neck are both made of Korina Mahogany. It turned out to be a Limited-Edition version of the guitar line.
When I looked on Reverb there were three of this specific color and model listed. What was hilarious was all three of the guitars were listed above $400 where the normal models of the line used were all around $199.
All this time I did not know that I had a hidden gem or collectible guitar sitting in my rack albeit a non-working one.
Everything about the guitar physically including the neck, frets, and body is in like new condition.
    I dug up a used Seymour Duncan SH-1b '59
Bridge Humbucker pickup and started to map out a wiring circuit.
I have always been a little disappointed in single pickup humbucker guitars in the fact that most of them do not have any advanced wiring. Most guitars like this have a single pickup mode which is humbucker.
I found a wiring diagram that has a single volume, single tone control, and a single humbucker. What was cool is the circuit took advantage of a push pull pot in the volume position that gave an additional pickup mode of a split single coil using the south coil of the humbucker.
I dug through my parts and finally found a push pull pot in 500k that would fit in the control cavity of this guitar.
The circuit is comprised of 2 each 500k pots with a .033 uf Capacitor.
I also found a set of Kluson 3+3 Plus Series Tuners that are designed to be an exact drop in replacement for the crappy large economy tuners that come on less expensive Epiphone and Squier guitars. I have installed these tuners on about a dozen guitars and they are such an easy upgrade for only about $43. Link in video description:

This has to be one of the most fun little guitars I have messed around in a long while. I know lot of the Gibson purists are going to be in the comments about it not being a set neck and a bolt to make matters worse. I laugh because 95% of my guitars have bolt on necks. It is really had for me to imagine looking at them with such disdain.
It kicks ass. The humbucker sounds coming out of this thing are not made to play soft and clean music but instead something that would blow the speakers out of your amp.

Great upload. Awesome tone from that JB. Looks so much better with rosewood as opposed to Indian Laurel.
