Crispin Glover on Letterman - 3rd Appearance (1990) - Good quality

  • The air of mystery still surrounded his 1st appearance. Glover tries to explain and give hints that it was actually Rubin Farr who was on his show the first time, but Letterman is annoyed with his long story and cuts him off. Rubin Farr was Glover's character in the cult classic "Rubin and Ed."

Holy smokes Crispin Glover is brilliant. He tried to jump to the record promotion to avoid Dave's assumed "apology time." Then he lets Dave shut it down with a smart ass remark like "when you have your own show you can set the agenda." So the ball is back in Crispin's court and he hijacks the time segment drawing out a bogus story which forces Dave to essentially go back to Crispin's agenda. Dave got beat at his own game. Bravo, Crispin. Bravo.

Was that a remake one about rats? If what you're saying is true then that's good for Crispin and everyone, like Eric Clapton who left Cream because they were becoming too commercial. I love weird movies that take turns that I didn't expect. Like Schwartzenneger in Total Recall. It's too bad if Crispin is doing movies that most people have ever heard of or will ever see. He EASILY exceeds Jim Carrey (who is very good of course) and many others, but that's like saying someone had a better voice than Elvis. If the person only did one song....then maybe it was a fluke, a one hit wonder, while Elvis was great for hundreds of songs over 3 decades.

Back in 1097 I was at my Uncle's house out in Los Angeles , California. My Uncle worked behind the scenes in the business for as far back as I can remember. Like when I was really young and into the Incredible Hulk he not only got me Lou Ferrigno's autograph , he actually wrote me a letter in green marker signed as The Hulk. He had Bo and Luke Duke sign my birthday cards. These were the type of things he did for me when he worked at CBS. Later in his career he had Sydney Pollack personally seek him out for help to start Tri-Star pictures. He's worked for HBO until he finally ender up at Entertainment Partners as Senior Vice President. So my Uncle had a pretty decent career behind the scenes in the business. So he also had a little bit of clout when it came to helping someone who wanted to be an actor. He wasn't no Steven Spielberg who could pull Jo Blo off the street and give them the lead in an award winning film of the next summer blockbuster. But he could get someone their SAG card and introduce them to the President of a casting company were you could work daily as either an extra or a bit role where you would make union pay (so you can afford to make a living) and where you're foot is in the door and your chances of getting noticed just sky rocketed. I used to tell my Uncle that I wanted to be an actor. He always told me to stay clear of the business. His idea of success is a Brad Pitt , Sean Penn , or Leo. He would tell me how just about all the waiters and bartenders in L,A are struggling actors. One time we were at his house ( a modest home in the Hollywood Hills) and I started to say I wanted to be an actor. He started to give me the spiel about how tough it is to break in the business and the waiter situation. And then he lowered his voice and told me his neighbor was an actor and that he hardly ever works and how pathetic he was. So I peeked to see who his neighbor was and it was Crispin Glover.

Linda’s ITC Channel Also a reference to his movie Rubin and Ed about burying a cat. A slick way of pointing out how Letterman didn’t know the movie that Crispin was in during the first interview. The clothes and shoes he was wearing when he kicked at Letterman was his costume for Rubin and Ed.

A few people in the comments get it. This is organized improv. Like Letterman or not, he's a smart man who knows exactly what he's doing. Same for Glover. Letterman did it with Cher, Madonna, Oprah... all planned to some extent, everyone knew what they were getting out of it... except for much of the audience. It's just entertainment. And, if anything, these two are trolling viewers.

Wow ... I noticed the same thing about the kid about whom Glover was talking: the "Rubin Farr" guy in his class, that is, before Dave unceremoniously cuts him off. Also interesting is that, on the 1st appearance on Letterman, when he had his hair long (was that even his own hair then? It almost looked like a wig) & was all decked out just right for the Rubin Farr character he plays in Rubin & Ed: the hair, the glasses, those platform shoes & that t-shirt, but that appearance, on Late Night, was in, I think, '89 or right around then, but Rubin & Ed didn't come out (as far as I know) until 1992; not 100% positive of that, but my copy of it has "1992" as the copyright date or year of release, whatever. Of course, I'm not uneducated in the whole movie-making biz; I know of several films (I say "several" cuz I've heard or read about x # of movies which were made in a certain year, certain time frame but either never got released at all or sat on the shelf for several years, waiting for some kind of distribution deal to pop-up or whatever the thing is. Like Crispin mentions, Rivers Edge had just come out & that's what he was on the talk show circuit, promoting. But, since he was dressed in his Rubin character's outfit, etc. it makes you think doesn't it? Maybe he was in the midst of making Rubin & Ed. Jeeezz... now I feel like watching it again.

....first is the crazy clown acting from the original interview ...the next one was all the crazy clown props ...then lastly was the crazy clown music video.
People take this far too seriously ...Letterman would never have had him on THREE times ...if he'd had an issue with Crispin.......
He's just goofing around ....getting far more publicity by acting looney ....than ANY generic style interview.
