Epica is the most complete band, in my opinion. They are heavy af but the symphonic elements takes them to the next level. I recommend their new song called Omega (their new album is titled the same).

Yeah, Simone Simons is out of this world. One of the greatest vocalists out there. This Retrospect show lasted for about three hours, she kept those high soaring vocals up the whole show through. The band incorporates orchestra and choir in every song. Epica, well those guys and lady are a league on their own. Don't worry by pausing, you're not the only one who thought the song was over after that section! 😉😅
I don't see the band getting much pay for this concert after paying the venue, the techs, the orchestra and two choirs. Fabulous show however.
@@572Btriode Well, they could have kept it more simple with recorded orchestra and choir etc. But it was Epica 's tenth anniversary and they wanted to make it a special evening to remember for the fans. They succeeded in that. More than 8 years later and people are still talking about it. The show could also be streamed live worldwide and the show was released on dvd.
@@jaapblaauw3735 Yep, I agree, what an epic show however for an anniversary concert, live orchestra and choirs is not doing things by halves at all.

@@572Btriode It was a huge undertaking, they started organizing the whole thing one and a half year in advance. As Epica uses choir and orchestra heavily, their music is already suitable to be played live by an orchestra. Still some songs had to be rearranged for orchestral parts. The orchestra and choir arrived 1 week in advance in order to do rehearsals with the band. Orchestra and choir were about 70 people if I'm not mistaken. So many people involved, let alone the ones working at the venue itself. But if you see the endresult...hats off to all of them.

Hey Mat and Chels - you don't have to choose between NW and Epica - both bands and front women are fantastic. Just enjoy! The retrospect show is over 3 hours long and Simone was 3 months pregnant at the time - and everybody, special kudos to Simone, still succeeded pulling it out and have lots of fun at the same time

What an amazing 3 hour show.
Sh'moon was a little short of breath from being a few months pregnant, with her first child, but that just makes me respect her performance even more.

Since you loved Simone's vocals, I suggest you listen to one of the songs from Epica's new album called "Rivers" is a beautiful ballad that showcases Simone's voice amazingly. Another thing to note is that their music is very poetic and heavy in lyrics. One of my favorite lyrics in Design your Universe is "So many people are full of hate
, While love and light are in their reach, So many people will harm themselves, But life can be so beautiful" which was hidden behind Mark's growling. Thank you for your great reaction!

Epica and Nightwish ( with Floor) are my favorit Bands and every time they are in my Town ( Munich) i was in there concert .....and every time it was great .....Design Your Universe is one of my favirit Songs for ever you can hear it 10000 Times and its always good ......i hope you bring more EPICA becauce i like your reaction
Cry for the moon is a great studio with string orchestra and choir.

The growly guitarist is Mark Jansen, no relation to Floor Jansen, however they were both in the band After Forever
To complement this tid bit of info about Mark, he dissolved the band After Forever to go and form Epica, with Simone...Meanwhile, Floor decided then to form her own band, ReVamp....It was after that when Tuomas contacted Floor, looking for a replacement to fill the void left in Nightwish by Annette Olsen, their latest singer at the time...
@@fonsecorona Not really. Mark Jansen was kicked out of After Forever. The rest of the band continued and recorded three more records without him. Simone only joined Mark's new project when other singers didn't work out.

Simone was over four months pregnant at this 3 hour show ...what a trooper.. This was their 10th anniversary show. You should watch the entire show ..called Retrospect
If I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Epica. Simone's voice is so heavenly and Mark Jansen's vocals contrast so richly with hers. It was also nice to know that I'm not the only one having eargasms while listening to this band. All the "Mmm's", chills and expressions were entertaining to see. :D

Yeah Simone is one of the best vocalists out there...but people tend to forget that she also is one of the best lyric writers in genre in general (in my opinion) praising only on Mark. There is a channel where guy put lyrics on Epica songs and in the end of the video he signs the authors of the song. It's always very curious to see what Simone wrote and what Mark wrote. As a result, you will always recognize their authoring style later.
In which songs did she write the lyrics with mark?
This is a great performance with the pause they created by the end. I like its lush and vibrant sound with the orchestra. I have to admit that I probably sort of prefer it over the studio version. It is from an album of the same name, which was Epica´s fourth. It was the first one with Isaac as the lead guitarist and because of that there were made some adjustments to songs to take full advantage of his skills. He was in the same band as Arien, the drummer, which was much heavier than Epica in its early years. I always forget its name, but there was something Dethroned, I believe. This album ended the "first age" of Epica for me. After recording of this album there was a longer gap than between previous ones as they searched for some inspiration and where to move on from there. Outcomes of this gap were two: recording of the fifth album Requiem for the Indifferent and founding of MaYaN as a project, which they could use as an outlet to put ideas that were too far from Epica´s general sound.
And there are some rather lovely ballads that should not remain forgotten.

One the most favorite band was Nile, the other was Hypocrisy but it’s over.
Floor coached Simone at some point, they even shared a room at some point. It kinda shows, or rather Sounds :-)))
And this was a 3.5 hour concert, while she was pregnant and the stress of live recording etc. So this is crazy good, by everyone.

What a great reaction and I think you are both right. Floor and Simone make you not only feel the music but also feel yourself. And, no suprise, there are more great female sympho rock singers in the Netherlands. Anneke Giersbergen and Sharon van Andelst for instance. Just try and enjoy.
On the Retrospect show was Simone Pregnent in the 3. Month with her Son and she do a 3h Metall Show
I'd like to humbly request that people give 'pregnancy fact time' a break. this would have taken some energy out of her but would also have given her more resonant space and core support. drawbacks and benefits, also just a part of life. people have done intensive things while pregnant for quite a long time, like all of the time that there have been people. it's also a little weird to have several men comment about her pregnancy on every single retrospect video, especially when the text or subtext that goes with it is stuff like "so that's why she didn't sound right".
Getting deeper into the rabbit hole of Symphonic Metal it is time to check out Floor Jansen's first band After Forever with "Monolith of doubt" live at Kopspijkers. She was 21 and a raw diamond. No - she was a better vocalist with 21 than 95% of the rest 😂. Also check out Within Temptation, the 3rd fantastic Symphonic Metal Band with a female vocalist. My favorite is "Mother Earth". Goosies 😂😂😂

You should not chose between Epica and Nightwish, they are both awesome, and to me very diffrent, some say they are simular bands, well not to me, exept they both got female singers, and make symfonic metal..

Floor Jansen en Simone Simons are BFF. They where school friends. The guy is Mark Jansen. He started Epica. He played before Epica with Floor Jansen in AfterForever their old band....
I highly doubt they were school friends or even knew each other before getting into music professionally. They're not of the same age and from different parts of the Netherlands.

@@MatandChelsReact Within Temptation are one of the best known bands in symphonic metal. Basically, Therion, Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, maybe Delain and Xandria (Delain unfortunately disbanded this year). I personally am not a big fan of WT since they started "experimenting with new sound" which resulted in such things as inviting a rapper to do a song with them. No thanks... But some people liked it. I think their fist 4 albums are fine.

There are people who loved Within Temptation but only the first two albums. After that their music changed but they got famous with these new songs like Mother Earth and Ice Queen. They reached a new group of people who start listen to their songs but the people who loved the first two albums did not like the new songs.

- Vibeke Stene (Tristania) - wonderful unique sound of Tristania - gothic metal gods
- Dianne van Giersbergen - fantastic job with two Xandria albums (one of the best SM bands to me)
- Sharon den Adel - haunting voice of Within Temptation (Enter album is their best to me but SM ones also fantastic)
And Tarja of course - I think that she is better in old NW songs. Such a Slaying the Dreamer is much more better with Tarja than Floor. Tarja gave such a power to that song...
