Brings back wonderful memories of childhood in South India, nurtured by Irish nuns in a convent on the top of a mountain (PCK) where we used to sing this on St Patrick's Day, 17 March - together with many more. Thank you!

In keeping with the background of many Australians, my own background is cosmopolitan and involves English, Welsh, Irish and Danish. My Danish grandmother married my Irish grandfather but sadly he died of blood poisoning just before I was born in 1945. Some of the Irish obviously rubbed off on my grandmother, because when I was small she sang The Mountains of Mourne to me on many occasions. Indeed it the first song I remember ever hearing, and it is just as beautiful today as it was then!

This reminds of the times when my Sweet Mother and I would waltz together. She was so light on her feet and had a way of finding joy any and everywhere. She would have loved this and of how we would have danced.

Your combination of videos and music is wonderful. My father had a beautiful tenor's voice and I can almost hear him singing this song. Thank you. Kathy...

Beautiful, touching, heartfelt old Irish song. The best version is sang by John, to my mind. Listen to his voice every day. His beautiful voice gladdens my heart.

I am on the edge of envy - to really see where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. Alas, no money. At least they have an understanding of their own history and it's importance on the world stage.

Oh mary this london's a wonderful sight
With the people here working by day and by night
They don't sow potatoes nor barley nor wheat
But there's gangs of them that's what I've been told
So I just ook a hand at this digging for gold
But all that I found there I might as well be
Where the mountains of mourne sweep down to the sea
I believe that when writing a wish you expressed
As to how the fine ladies in london were dressed
Well if you'll believe me, when asked to a ball
They don't wear a top to their dresses at all!
Oh I've seen them myself, and you could not in truth
Say if they were bound for a ball or a bath
Don't be starting them fashions now, marry machree
Where the mountains of mourne sweep down to the sea
You remember young peter o'loughlin, of course
Well, now he is here at the head of the force
I met him today, I was crossing the strand
And he stopped the whole street
With one wave of his hand
And there we stood talking of days that are gone
While the whole population of london looked on
But for all these great powers, he's wishful like me
To be back where dark mourne sweeps down to the sea
There's beautiful girls here - oh never you mind!
With beautiful shapes nature never designed
And lovely complexions, all roses and 'cream
But o'loughlin remarked with regard to the same:
"that if all those roses you venture to sip
The colour might all come away on your lip"
So I'll wait for the wild rose that's waiting for me
Where the mountains of mourne sweep down to the sea

I miss the Irish Tenors since John and Ronan left. I attended one of their concerts and two of Ronan's. I dressed up making friends say I was in love with him -I didn't usually speak well of men. I sent him backstage a stargazer lily - a proper female to male greeting. Any song either sings soothes or excites the heart like no other singer today. I hope they have blessed lives in thanks for the joy they have given so many.
