I wasn't clear enough in my comments on repeater programming. If you'll look closely, you'll see that 6.4 is "repeater programing" and appears to be one page long. Remember the size of the pages in question? When you finally get to that page, its only half a page of text, no pictures and it completely skips over tones. Unless you already know what you're doing, this won't get you success.
To me, this radio's target price range and audience require much more information and introduction. This radio is targeted at the new-ham or the ham-curious. If you don't know how to program a repeater already, all you'll get with this radio is frustration. Baofeng has been making radios for a long time and this is one of those things (along with filters) that they have had plenty of runway to fix.
Thanks for watching.
I was lucky, when I got my Pro Non GPS version I came straight to CZcams to programme it to a local repeater, though right now have only used it for receiving and not transmitting.
Currently in the UK due to do my Ham Radio license in the next 8-12 weeks.
Just imagine if you had a nice guide in the owners manual that had pictures and explanations! @@leejenkinson5521
What did you mean about getting another radio that's clean? Surely you didn't mean it was dirty right out of the box, I googled it and got nothing. Sorry new to radios in General just thought i'd ask.
@@crossfiregaming9541yep, dirty right out of the box. All of the extra markers should be below the blue line in the test.
I guess that's what you get with a sub $20 product 😂😂
My biggest issues with these "upgraded" radios is they lose all the accessories that have been produced for the UV-5R and compatible models.
Yep, it's a brand new generation of stuff to buy. 😪
What accessories are you talking about? Like having extra batteries and chargers?
@@clone1137 Yes, extended batteries and chargers.
To be fair the UV 5r batteries are cheap and wouldn't be water resistant. Sometimes for upgrades you can't keep backwards compatibility@@AdministrativeReload
Glad to see the battery says "battery". Looking forward to when the belt clip says "belt clip".
I know, I had to use my label maker to fix that omission!
this cracked me up! thank you for the belly laugh!
Thanks for watching!

Looks like the same UI as the Talkpod radios. Nice to see that they updated and a nice radio design on the outside too. Still a dirty radio. So dirty, dirty, dirty… 73!
They coulda made something!
I've seen those menus before 😏 good work TO!
Yep, the new normal!
my goodness your weather guy has the same voice as my weather guy
Weird!
If only these companies that manufacture radios could afford a Tiny SA to use for testing their product.
Totally agree!
Sad Ham Alert
@RandallRash they can!
Then they would have to change how they make them and they probably wouldn't be $30 and wouldn't be able to work at all outside of the ham bands which is kinda a selling point for these.
"in bulk" really changes things. Look at the GT-5R or the UV-19 - both clean. These radios have pennies of parts in them at the qtys baofeng will sell them. @@haxwithaxe
the UV-17R's I purchased are also Triband Radios: 2m, 1.25m, and 70cm bands workon this radio. Also the one 16" antenna that came with radio is a triband antenna.
Excellent, it's smart to get the tri-bander version!
Wow. That sure is a pretty 'Feng
Sure is!
I just bought a pair of these UB-17R’s on Amazon at the end of January 2024. They both came with drop in charger made for the Uv 17r, it came with two different antennas ( one about 9” long and one about 16” long (both rated for both frequency bands), they had batteries with USB charging capability and the USB charge cables. Instruction manual downloaded from Baofeng has repeater programming instructions. .
Sweet!
Amazing video bro!
Glad you liked it!
Hey Steve, great and entertaining video, eat to follow you crack me up. Lol
Thanks for the other comment, I was curious if you were telling me to go get some lunch ;-) -- Thanks for watching!
Before you get yelled at ...that hit home...😂
Right!
I actually found a use for those earbuds that come with the baofeng radios- you can turn them into microphones for you KX2 or trusdx. And rather easily at that.
Nice!
The ones I have with UV5Rs I use when hunting moose. My hunting partners also have radios and it allows me to receive without alerting my potentiel pray. Plus I usually keep the radio in my chest pocket with antenna protruding. Having the external mike is useful as I don’t have to pull radio out of my pocket ti transmit.
@@andreboudreau6474 that's a good use for that!

Based on what you showed us, I think I like the old better. But others may feel differently and that's ok.
I think the modern look and the RSSI are good, the rest is "same old feng"
The UV-17 pro apparently has some APRS functionality in it. A bit more pricy, and also transmits on 220 if you want to call less than a watt useful on a handheld.
One of these days we'll get a good radio.
@@temporarilyoffline Oh I have a Yaesu FT-60, and a Kenwood TOMORROW-V71A I just saw a review on the UV-17 pro a little while ago. Trust me, the 1 Baofeng that I do have rarely transmits. Way too dirty.
$37 for the PRO on Ebay with Nov shipping. This baby xmits everywhere! No need for the FCC restricted UV-17R and it has an advertised 50 kilometers range! Outstanding!

Just Got Mine For Christmas 2023**** Great Little Radio. Thanks Take Care.
Hope you have fun with it! Any local repeaters?
I'll give them points for the massive screen improvement over the UV5R. My old eyes struggle to read my GT5R.
I was surprised that you didn't throw the stock antenna in the trash. It must be an upgrade. Okay, I keep mine, but they're all in the bottom of the parts box.
Had to do apples:apples man! Wouldn't be fair to have the old guard working at an advantage!
Its got some advantages like being able to edit a memory channel on the radio. On the uv5r you have to create a new channel and delete the old one just to turn on a ctcss tone that wasnt stored with the channel. ON the 17 just bring up the channel and turn it on and it stays in the memory.
The did make some good refinements for sure. I did a video highlight ling most of them
When you hit the harmonic with that guitar pick. Don't know why put made me laugh more than it should've.
It's kinda on point, isn't it?
I have that one and the 17pro gps. Gps is only on the 17pro gps. They use the same mold. Neat radio
Does the 17pro add APRS as well?
@@temporarilyoffline I think no
Vindicated again! Glad to see no returns to the original problem of the infamous uv-5r... but wait... still spraying at the 1st harmonic?
You can buy a better radio, but one that transmits on multiple bands at once... that's special!
TO! Nice video and nice spin on the potential uses. See you out there. 73 de Bill
Soon!
I orderd 2 of these radios. And I wanted the one that transmitting on 220 mhz. And I specifically told the seller I wanted the 220mhz one. And I only got one out of 2 that transmitts on 220 mhz. So it's a game of chance with these baofeng sellers.
The 220mhz radio should be a "UV-17L" and the 2/70 only should be a "UV-17R". If you got a UV-17R when you asked for an L model, send it back!
I need one of those small hard cases for my digirig, cables and HT. I will check out the video. Thanks.
Awesome!
Nice review: Short and to the point. The link on Amazon shows the price today is $26.99, but that might be a black Friday price.
Thanks!
I have a few uv 5r’s and a GT5 (uv5r knock off) I actually really like all of them. Mostly use them as scanners tho
Not a bad price for a scanner... Even if it's slower than a uniden, it's very much cheaper.
Waiting for radio's to support USB-C charging. These docking stations are fine for home. But in the field I would like to charge it via powerbank/Solar.
You can get a USB-C Model here: amzn.to/47IgS4R (with 220Mhz too!)
Or a USB-C extra battery here: amzn.to/3uFaQ6w
I have two of these 17's and they show the same spurious harmonics as yours.
I am pretty sure all of them will show the same spurs.
Great video! I have a UV17R that I'm about to make a video on as well. The odd part is that mine has a different display, a USB-C battery, a different sounding voice, and is clean on harmonics! It is so frustrating when these radios vary like this.
You have the black on white model? Yep, totally agree that they should make 1 or 2 good products instead of many bad ones.
mine also have much uglier font/display, but its color. I wonder if mine are counterfeit UV-17R i bought a pair (1 is orange and 1 is green) off Amazon... they have a USB-C port in their batteries.
@@olemissjim it is my understanding that baofeng is making both of those radios - not counterfeit, but also not smart to name them the same, put them in the same "body" and give them different features.

Ok Just for Kicks, Press an Hold the Blue button on the keypad. That's how I made my GPS come on and there was also nothing in my user manual that helped. My UV-17 Pro Chassis looks exactly the same but Firmware has a different look. So after you press and hold the Blue button and get the GPS Screen then short press the Green button to see the directional screen. After that? NO CLUE!!! LOL
Long press blue button is "search uhf" and then none of the other buttons work. Re-press the blue button and it cancels the search.

Ya know, I really should've paid more attention in Recon training when they were going over radio stuff. I recognize a bunch of terms, but honestly have zero idea what any of them mean anymore (getting old). My job was basically to put the damn drone together and hold it while my battle launched it. Great little radio only thing chirps not updated to program it do you know of any other programs?
Not yet, but it won't be long.
The UV-17L isn't a bad radio but would be better with one simple feature. I looked but couldn't find a way to mute the sub-band. Ideally there would be a way to only display/monitor one band instead of both. I get around it by setting the sub-band to a channel/frequency with little use but it would be nice to be able to select one or both. Or, barring that, an option to mute the sub-band the way Yaesu does.
Agreed, That would be great!
Let Baofeng know as it can be added via firmware update.
Turn tdr off
Thanks @@jeffworkman1982 @jmacbops TDR will make the radio only listen to one VFO at a time, not "dual watch"
Can that one be firmware upgraded to hear SSB? I am drumming for an Nuggets episode on how to do that, and how well it works.
I don't know, this is a pretty new chip and the hacking hasn't begun yet.

Looks nice. My question are 1) Does it have a low battery warning? And 2) Does the audio out jack preamp have enough output to actually be useful? Those are my biggest complaints with the UV5R.
I had to run the battery down enough to answer you! It does have a low battery warning. For audio out, It was loud enough for me, but that's probably subjective.
@@temporarilyoffline Thank You!
I have said for decades, and this seems the trend for all manufacturers, that with each new model released each year, many come close to a perfect radio design, but intentionally fall short !
It's like, if they would have just done this, or would have done just one more thing, then it would be perfect !
Seems they want to keep something in reserve for the next latest greatest ?
💯 agree
Agreed, IPhone blew their load a few years ago so there’s barely any noticeable difference between models. I still use ‘‘em but they should throw the market for a loop and combine a tazer or stun gun built into the next iPhone. Give the people what they want!😂

You know that won't happen, as there's always a few out there just waiting to sue !
They would shock themselves, and here they come !
Lol !
If they're going to put a stun gun in a phone, I hope they can set them to give a nice shock to the operator, with each incoming call !
Now that would be a hoot !
And might keep people off their phones !

How much moisture can these new ones take, I know the 2 older one's my son had both fied from morning moisture on our deer lease?

GMRS License: geni.us/f4NzTp
HAM License: geni.us/qB7n7tT
Chapter 6 section 6.4 Repeaters Programming? I really don't know but I do know I will save my money and buy a Yaesu if I ever want a HT. I am into the CW now trying to learn how to read and send code. My choice of radios will be QRP-labs. I got my order in. Also maybe use your build videos to build myself one in the future.
Excellent - the qrp labs radios are a challenge, more like a puzzle. They are designed to be mentally stimulating.
What radio would you recommend for hunting in the mountains and being within a few miles at the longest from your partner’s?
I'd start with what they have already and match them. If they have nothing and you're a licensed ham, this might be a good place to start, but it depends on terrain and other obstacles if you'll connect. If you're not a ham, the GMRS license is the same price, but no test. In both cases, height means might and more watts out are better... But at about $30, it doesn't hurt to test the waters with either the GMRS version or the ham version baofeng offers. After you dive in, you'll quickly learn what more you need and there isn't any easier/cheaper method than to just get started. Have fun!
This looks more like an update to the uv-82.
I wander how long it will take them to run out of stock of the old ones?
It seems to me these are closer to the Senhaix 8600/8800 radios, which are quite nice.
I hadn't noticed before, but I can see that now that you mentioned it, thanks!
I have a knock-off Baofeng BF-18H (same chassis) but the battery came with USB-C charging. No reason this one shouldn’t have that either.
It's an option for this radio too.
Are these TX locked to ham bands or can these tx on GMRS frequencies like the old UV-5R?
These are locked and at present there is no "unlock code" - stay tuned!
how much cost would it add to make the backlight diffuser a semi transparent mirrored surface so if the ambient light is greater than the backlight, it becomes passively lit, like the old gameboy screens
That's a good idea!
The scratches won't be on the screen protector next time lolz, i think they should be called bao-Fun!
Nice radio, i like it! Tnx man!
Nope, they'll be directly on the screen! More video content when it comes time to replace the screen!
Hey. Radio noob here, with a noob question. What do you mean by the dirty or clean in the radio signal and since it seems to matter, which clean radio would you suggest to replace this with?
Dirty = The radio transmits "loud" signals on frequencies its not supposed - some of which you aren't legally allowed to transmit on, and some of which might interfere with your local emergency services.
My recommendation would depend on quite a few things, but I'm happy to help out. First question is always budget, second question is what digital mode, if any, does your local repeater use?
@@temporarilyoffline In terms of budget, I prefer the lower end. That's why I'm interested in these Baofengs. I'd prefer to spend less than 200 for 2 radios to start with. I'm afraid I don't know about local repeaters. I assume there's an app for maps maybe? I'll take a look.
Edit: Possibly FM or echo link
@@sergemarlonThis radio will work for FM - echolink is a free app on your phone, so get on that ASAP. Get your feet wet with some cheap baofengs like this one and start playing. With this radio and the right cable, you can program from the computer, send emails, send digital text messages, beacon weather, etc. Its crazy how much stuff you can do with one of these and the right accessories. After you get started, you'll know better what you're interested in. As for repeaters, there is an app or a website from: www.repeaterbook.com

@@sergemarlonYou bet! Stay tuned for more!
The new radios are pretty cool with features like more saved channels and ability to charge via USB-C but take note all new baofengs may not transmit on the frequencies they are advertised as being able to transmit on because if that frequency isn't legal in your country it will be blocked by the manufacturer to comply with regulations. For example in the UK you won't be able to transmit on or above 480mh.
Good point!
You can easily unlock them to get full band tx/rx

I have a few baofengs that I bought in April 2023. Then, I could hit repeaters miles away but recently couldn’t even use them 100 yards away on simplex. I think something happened.
That's interesting, I wonder what happened? Do you know where the towers are?
@@temporarilyoffline A two meter repeater is about 15 miles, and 70cm about 25-30 miles away. Now that I think about it, the radios that could open the repeaters were UV S9. When I tried to talk around my house on simplex I grabbed one S9 and one “Temu” UV5R. I bet that’s the problem. Tomorrow I’ll test them all.

I really don't know why they do this. It's one reason why I've still not ordered a Baofeng unit. The UV-17 really got my attention. Seems to be a solid radio, nice antenna, good display, but that dirty on transmit stuff needs to be addressed.
There will be better models of the radio that are cleaner as time goes by. I already have another version that is almost 100% clean, where its dirty, you likely won't use it... so progress is happening!
There are a ton of models, if you got the wrong one, return it ASAP and get the one you want. There is also the UV-19 series, same body/shape, different guts.
I ordered a uv 17L and got the R. As soon as i get thecrwfund ill throw it in the trash
I would expect that they are using the same guts for all their radios that fit this footprint but only turning on certain features or bands depending on the price point. We need to have a handy ham get inside one and figure out the process of making the radio more useable. hint, hint...
100% agree - Baofeng doesn't make the "Radio-On-A-Chip" module that is inside, and I don't think they are packaging it up either. I'd love to play around with the chip on a "dev module". Gotta get in there and see. (This is how the UV-5R was also)
Try the hash key for power.
Will do
The menu looks like from the Talkpod A36plus
It sure does!
After several years of rough use my UV-5R is on its last legs, held together with zip ties, all the buttons are bald and the potentiometer doesn't like to work at times. I'm debating getting another uv-5r or just waiting and upgrading

Hi there! I’ve just been super curious if I could work a satellite with a baofeng. I already have a BF F8HP and an arrow antenna. The antenna doesn’t have a duplexer so I have to use 2 radios, one for transmit, and one for receive. I plan on using the F8HP for transmitting. Could I successfully listen on a UV5R or one of these things? Anything else you recommend (transmitter or receiver, I’m looking for advice)? Thanks!
One more thing before I forget. If I physically attach a radio to an arrow antenna (e.g Velcro on the boom) so it’s easier to hold the antenna and listen to the radio at the same time, will it attenuate the signals at all? Thanks again, KC1TOK Zach.
Any two HTs in the setup you mentioned will work, the rest is all skill, percerverance and patience! You got this! (No problem with velcroing the radio)
@@temporarilyoffline Thank you very much for getting back! 73 from an enthusiastic technician.
My trouble with my UV17r is that the screen looks totally different, and programming software couldn't be had at their site, I had to go to miklor. It works great though, and transmits on GMRS . I bought it on Amazon. It seems they would patrol the pirates a little more. I would pay almost twice as much to be sure I was really getting the radio I expected. That said, I don't even know how such a well built radio can be built and shipped at the price point.
There are two official versions of the 17R model - white on black and black on white... and they have slightly different features. Its a problem. As to the price point, they will sell millions of them and have all of the manufacturing in place, in volume they are still making a good profit on these radios.
@@temporarilyoffline mine is a blue screen with white bars at the top and bottom with a light blue background. The labels, everything look official, but I've got to assume it is a knock off since the display is so different and the software from Baofeng doesn't work.

Black on Blue amzn.to/3R1jTaT (I thought it was black on white, haven't seen it in a while). Both appear to be official to me. Interesting that one doesn't work with the software. Have you tried Chirp? Might be too new to tell yet.
@@temporarilyoffline yep, no chirp. I tried a lot of the one off told on Miklor, and finally found one that worked. There are other YT channels I've seen review blue screen ones like mine. I think one provided the lead on the Miklor site.
Another Ham Radio YTuber (Never Without Knowledge) just did a teardown and harmonics review (yesterday) of 3 separate variants of UV17 along with a UV21, he found the "plain" UV17 variant with a 2022-made board and GigoDevice ARM chip was actually giving a pretty clean output, unlike its "newer" affix-laden siblings. The most obvious difference is the LCD display shows a light-blue colored UI on white background instead of the black background.
I think the plain UV-17 could become a coveted "clean" cheap ham radio and a good waterproof alternative to the Radioddity GT-5R.
Thanks for the info!
I didn't like the Harmonics either. SWR on 70 CM was a little higher than I expected to see, but not too unreasonable. A better quality Antenna could well solve that. MY biggest beff with Baofeng, and why I have never wanted to own a UV-5, is the difficulty in programming them. The 17's manual failure to explain how to program a repeater is another Red Flag for me. If Baofeng would address both of these issues, I WOULD consider buying one.
Bruce A. Forster-AC7AA
Thanks Bruce! I feel like they've sold enough units to afford a better manual writer by now!
What is the difference between the 17 and 17R models or other R vs non R radios
Stay tuned for a video on that!
I doubt that the manual is in English. It's probably more like Chinenglish. I have a Baufeng UV-5E and I programmed both the UHF and VHF repeaters including the CTSCC tones for the repeaters. I programmed it from the front panel as I don't have a computer cable. Cheers & 73 from K9POW in eastern TN
No explanation of tones in the how-to section is my biggest concern.
How long does the battery last? And I will assume that with the screw on battery that the other Baofeng batteries won't work
I don't talk on 2m much, so mine lasts forever sitting in the charging cradle and listening. You can get additional batteries and they have USB-C charging. In my current world, I'm never far away from a charging solution.
How are the filtering qualities
They suck, take a look in the video for the filter sweep.
It seems a whole lot like the Atomstack A5pro ... i bet it is.
Nearly identical!
Apparently the UV17R Pro does have a GPS but there are other basic models that dont include it. I am about to push the button on one a bit cautious however.
Cautious is good. What are you cautious about?
Weather the seller is reputable enough to sell the correct model rather than do a bait and switch.
If its amazon, the seller likely doesn't know its not a toaster... but amazon has a good return policy, so its less of a gamble.@@davidwallace7761
lol "pick harmonics" as he uses a pick for guitar. That was good ;)
I wish I was clever enough to say that was on purpose

Baofeng F22. I connected a 2-pole wired microphone. The PTT button of the device was disabled, but the mini microphone does not work. Is there a menu setting?
I don't have that model, I'd double check the settings for anything obvious and try a factory reset... if those two things don't work I'd suspect a broken radio or a broken wired mic... swap one out and see. Good Luck!
I wanted to buy it just for the heck of it because it have zones but you can have only single zone top and bottom, cant have two at same time.
That stinks!
Nice new kit! You have way to little attenuation between the radio and tinysa! You are seeing perhaps artifacts of the tinysa. Connected direct to a radio, I transmit 1 watt through 80-90db of attenuation. 5 watts through 90-100! You'll get more reliable results.
Thanks for the tips!
90db? what are you trying to attenuate man, a marching band? I seriously doubt a tiny SA can hear a solar flare at -90db.
Solar flare? I was talking about the HT at 5 watts connected directly to the tinysa through a 40db attenuator. It's enough attenuation to keep the sa from destruction, but not enough for a clean signal
is it better than Quansheng UV K5?
No, the K5 has a huge aftermarket of custom firmware that add to the fun
Can thisone do the same as the 5? As in if you factory reset it you can do alot more frequenties?
No, they locked that out of this model. Might be a new key-combo
@@temporarilyoffline is there any newer model that can do the same? Or are they all locked out?
@@chazznl8823 the UV-5H (I think) is the next new model and it's supposed to be hackable.
What's also REALLY frustrating about Baofeng is the Ad that just showed up in my Email today June 10, 2024 is the 'Package' that shows the UV-17R + 2500mAh battery + Programming Cable and it says... $31.99, BUT when you click on that Link and when it opens up, it shows... $41.00. Hmmmmm ?? Don't try to tempt me Baofeng with your supposed "Flash Sale". And you're right Steve, this is a DIRTY radio. For about $20 more, Buy a TIDRADIO TD-H8....a VERY clean Chinese radio!
Baofengs are "interesting" for sure. Good toys to get you in deeper and get a better radio as you grow. Good place to start.
Which one is better between this one and UV 9S PRO?
I haven't used that radio yet.
@@temporarilyoffline thanks for the quick reply.
Does it GPS? Can you use it for APRS?
Good question!
I got one of these and it wont transmit at all. Factory reseted it but didnt help. anyone have any info?
If you're on a frequency that this radio isn't designed to transmit on, it won't allow it. Key-up on 146.52 and state your callsign. If the TX light comes on, you're golden... if not - refund!
Interesting radio. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
