  • Steel cutting officially started yesterday at Irving Shipbuilding Inc for the first of two new Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships. 🚱
These versatile ships are equipped to support fisheries enforcement and surveillance missions on Canada's east coast, as well as offshore search and rescue and icebreaking operations in Arctic and southern waters. They will also be able to support other missions including environmental response, aids to navigation maintenance, scientific research and humanitarian aid.
Renewing our fleet ensures that our personnel can continue to carry out their critical work, while enhancing our capability to support vital operations.

We need a few more, there’s a lot of coast, with a lot of maritime traffic.

Would be interesting to see what accomodation areas look like in your vessels

Apparently the Coast Guard variants of the AOPS are more expensive than the Navy variants because they have to meet civilian standards for crew accommodation and safety, so the crew quarters are probably pretty good.

More of these ships and the coast guard needs these ships to be armed.

Take away from the unarmed coast guard those two extra new vessels & give them to the navy.

I'm just curious. Why isn't the Canadian coast guard vessels? Gonna be armed with the same 25 mm bushmaster cannon that the Canadian navy has for the Harry Dewalt Arctic patrol vessel. The Canadian navy's underarmed in the Canadian coast guard. No gun, absolutely no gun, nada.

These ships are not armed because there is no role they perform that would require them. Canada's Coast Guard is primarily a civilian agency responsible for various missions such as search and rescue, environmental protection, icebreaking, fisheries enforcement, and navigation assistance. It's not directly responsible for law enforcement or military operations on the coasts that would require the organization to be armed. This is unlike the US Coast Guard, which performs a broader law enforcement role and combats higher rates of drug trafficking, piracy, etc.

@@CaptainAwesomeA But do they have minimum protection in case that they are threatened?

At most, the Canadian Coast Guard might have to deal with smugglers...but not in the Arctic. You're free to smuggle as much ice as you can carry!
