Memento Mori: The Reminder You Desperately Need

  • Who wants to think about death?
In his Meditations-essentially his own private journal-Marcus Aurelius wrote that “You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think.” That was a personal reminder to continue living a life of virtue NOW, and not wait.
Epictetus, urged his students: “Keep death and exile before your eyes each day, along with everything that seems terrible- by doing so, you’ll never have a base thought nor will you have excessive desire.” Use those reminders and meditate on them daily-let them be the building blocks of living your life to the fullest and not wasting a second.
Death doesn’t make life pointless but rather purposeful. And fortunately, we don’t have to nearly die to tap into this. A simple reminder can bring us closer to living the life we want.

I got the coin 2 or 3 months ago, and EVERY MORNING I say "Memento Mori" and "you could leave right now, let that determine what you do and say and think" to myself. I usually add "spend your time better." I also pray. This has helped significantly in regards to an addiction that I've done little about over the last 15 or so years. The last 3 months have been completely different. Between Memento Mori, a calendar that I mark off good and bad things each day, and sharing my addiction with people, I've created accountability.

@@thusspokedominicus my morning routine is something like Memento Mori followed by psalm 118. "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Then my prayer usually is something like:
"Lord, give me the strength to do what is right today for You, for me and for those around me. Help me be focused and productive in all that I do. Keep me on the path of improving myself, and help me find joy and peace."
I also usually repeat this for my ex-fiancee and ask the Lord, "and if it be Your will, please bring us back together again."
Then I go to a mirror I put in my room and do a self talk list posted on the wall next to it. "I am a valuable person," and things of that nature. It did feel cheesey at first but it's also been helpful.

I have been practicing "Negative Visualization" my whole life. I just recently found out that it
is part of the Stoic philosophy and practice. When I find myself in a situation or circumstance
which gives me anxiety or grief, I just simply ask myself, "What is the worst case scenario... Is this really something to get worked up over?" Most of the time, it isn't. I also remind myself, I'll be dead
one day and none of this really matters. We are tougher than we think.

I really needed to hear this. Been recently going through life with no direction. Did much in the past. Along the way I lost myself due to many messed up factors. That is what caused me to stop living in the present. The pandemic really shattered my way of seeing life. I will never be the same person I was. As a result, was trying to find an answer. Started looking into philosophy. Its true, death is inevitable. Started focusing on creating digital art. Wanted to do art when I was much younger and I chose a different path due to financial reasons. Before my time I want my art to be known by others and generate some income from it. This way I can leave this plain of existence without regret. Regret to me is worse than death itself. Thanks again.

I’m still getting hung up on the fact that I don’t like my job or the purpose it serves. I still need to keep this job ( I’m not young) but finding it hard to be truly present, find meaning in the 40 hours + time at home answering emails, dealing with clients, when I don’t find it meaningful. I’m just doing it for the money and for the time in the future when I can stop and really do things that are meaningful to me and the community. It’s me literally killing time and it’s heartbreaking.

I had the same situation for 20 years at a job. Everyday my head was not connected to my body. I know exactly the feeling. Not until I was fired did I finally wake up. I also felt I could not leave the job because it was good money. My only suggestion is you find a way to leave that job as soon as humanly possible because there is life on the other side. I know it's scary but you must do what makes you come alive. You must find a healthy environment. It's probably not what you do but who you do it with that is killing you. @@macjrc very much the owner. I still do the same type of work I have done for the last 30 years and I'm completely happy with what I do for a living. It was the environment I was in that was slowly killing me. I had acid reflux. And the day they fired me I realized a week later I didn't have it anymore. I probably would be dead with cancer by now had they not fired me. As I look back I wish I didn't hold on to the money and security as much as I did and changed paths. Believe me I know that's easier said than done. I for one did not do it! I had to be fired to leave. So I am a complete hypocrite. Know that I know that. By the grace of God they fired me. I only pray that you live within your means and slowly start to find a way to move towards a better environment even if it means less money and less security. Because your life matters. Most of the internet has been expertly engineered to waste your time and energy (to sell you shit you don't need), stealing the big picture focus of "precious moments of life slipping away every second."
It's so hard to communicate this to someone who's still in the "internet induced dopamine addict" phase of existence - blindly scrolling, posting, watching. Saying "you're going to die" doesn't really resonate with someone with no real purpose, goals or passion until it's too late.

It somehow translates that Unus Annus experience to how it could be applied to my life. I can suddenly see both things from a slightly different perspective. It's all of the same things that were said/discussed on the Unus Annus channel, but it was such a lighthearted context that even though I knew it was deep, I wasn't in the frame of mind to absorb it at a deeper level and apply it to my context of life. I honestly feel like I've learned this so late. I lost my fiance, and wasted so much of my life trying to break into an industry I thought was everything to me only to realize I only needed a different career to live a happy life with my the love of my life. Now I have no idea how to move forward or to want to.

I never really let myself worry about or fear dying as it’s part of the deal of life and just focused on enjoying life as much as j could to make it worth the “deal” until my son was diagnosed autistic and I don’t know if he’ll be okay without me. He’s only 9yo but he’s not where I hoped he’d be, but the older he gets the less I’m convinced he’ll ever have the skills survive without my help. I don’t have family I can trust to help him
That wouldn’t just use his disability benefits as a side paycheck. I pray I can do the right things to prepare him for the inevitable and to survive without me. He’s smart but he’s trusting and makes him an easy target. I don’t want him to be alone. Plus right now he’s limited verbally but he’s never truly stopped progressing there so I hope that continues. But I can’t bear the thought of him passing before me.I can only do my best and hope that’s enough regardless of what the future holds.

I’ve been thinking about this lately. Once we die, what really happens ? Think about it. No one really knows until experienced. Where do we go afterlife ? We’ll have no control where we go, no control what we do in the after life - wont be able to take anything in the after life. The only choices you have are the ones in this life. Don’t be scare or let fear get in your way of a better life, what is holding you back? It could be financially, relationship, better use of time or bad habits, or maybe being the victim because it’s easier too. I struggle with this too but I accept we’ll all die. The best things in life are free - birth, death, water, friendships, laughter, meaningful conversations, & relationships. Cherish who you have, what you got & time you still have because you won’t get those things back & wont be able to take it to the grave

@@danilomarulanda8621 if god fearing Christians Really Beleived in a place called hell; ETERNaL HORRoR and TortURE for unbelievers, why don’t all Christians desperately recruit all unbelievers. Wouldn’t they forget about a job, or a family, even eating food, and wearing clothes....there is nothing more important than always converting any human you meet! There would be Nothing in Life, Nothing. Nothing but the horror of eternal hell. For other people who don’t know or don’t believe. Memento Mori became very real for me when I had open heart surgery in 2022. I never felt so close to death as I did when I awakened from that surgery and during the months of recovery . It was a realization that Death is the ultimate release from all pain. I now believe death does not have to be the painful experience it is for so many people. I think about quickly I could be gone now quite often. It is very surreal when you think about it. My mom also died a few months before. She was young 71 years old. She died gracefully with acceptance from what I saw. I did get to say goodbye to her and knew it would be the last time I could talk with her. She recognized me but was very week and had trouble talking. Anyway at 52 I am trying to be grateful for all I have.
