    i’m obsessed with baddie personally, probably my favorite new ive title track after love dive

  • @2FullMoons
    @2FullMoons Před 8 měsíci +43

    I love Baddie a lot actually. Do I think it’s on par with their previous titles? No, but I don’t even think they were going for that. This song was made by some of the same people that worked on their previous stuff, I am more than sure they knew this was not I AM or LOVE DIVE level greatness. I mean, even one of the Baddie writers tweeted before the release that we might not like it and that’s okay.
    Starship is experimenting this era with IVE in terms of everything, from promo to marketing to singles choices... everything is new and unlike their previous eras. I think I AM being the biggest release of 2023 in South Korea, gave them the security to try a new approach because that song is still charting top 10 on some charts, 6 months later.
    Also, while the approach might be different and the songs might not be as strong by IVE’s standards, I do want to point out that one of the criticism which is that ‘it doesn’t sound like IVE’ is kinda odd IMO because IVE never stuck to one particular style or sound with any of their previous titles, and it’s the same case here, with this project where we have 3. Their whole concept is the idea of showing us what they can do, constantly challenging themselves. I like that because they are very exciting in that sense, you never know what you’re gonna get, BUT, I also understand that doing so, you are bound to also release stuff that maybe not everyone will vibe with.
    So while I agree this is not as strong as their previous work, them doing something ‘new’ sound wise shouldn’t be a surprise because they never stuck to one sound anyway... After LIKE, ELEVEN, KITSCH, I AM, LOVE DIVE... they don’t sound the same at all. But they are indeed massive, anthemic title tracks compared to Baddie. The new style is not the problem, it’s the simple, cookie cutter way in which it was done that doesn’t feel IVE like, who again, got us used to these larger than life bops. Baddie is not even trying to be great, unlike their previous stuff, it just plays on it’s catchiness and that’s it. I like it a lot but I also get *some* of the criticism.
    I hope I explained that well and SO sorry for the long a*s explanation. LOL

      @sugardextrose Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think the style change was a mistake... It's not like releasing another anthemic sounding single would have felt repetitive at the third cb. Why change what Is not broken? Just to release such a (well produced, obviously) generic "girlcrush/bad girl" themed song that feels like it's been heard a million times before. They were developing such a great single run where each song built upon what the previous one acomplished, embracing what made their sound unique. And then this dropped.

    I appreciate the risk of baddie, but I think it would’ve been so much better if baddie had been released first, then Off the record and then either way, that would’ve been a different strategy than most of the K-pop scenario right now and I think it would’ve still kept the Korean fans excited, to me that way it would’ve been like actually preparing a stage to show a different side of IVE (that is actually controversial and sensitive and not so much spoken in Korea as a main theme while being so important) but actually focusing on it, because Either way it’s their best track out the three but really feels like wasted potential for an IVE face that’s new, original and exciting

    Either way had just such a raw and emotional message, a beautiful MV, great vocals, and emotional acting, so for me it was always gonna be hard to top it in terms of something I connected to in a meaningful way. Baddie is catchy, but I don’t know why even though I love Kitsch, I wouldn’t really have baddie on replay as much. It’ll probably grow on me as most things do, but I just loved either way too much from the start I guess. The only downside to that song is it makes me sad😂

    IVE means I have. Their concept is showing what talent they have. To clarify this 3 title tracks have meanings, either way is about what people see in them, OFT what they see in each other and baddie what new things that they see in theirself. For me, I love the Baddie and OTR especially their performance and choreo♥️

    Aaaand that's why I'm living with wheein's new album cause it might not be your preferred genre of music to listen to but u can't deny is one of the most cohesive works released this year. U dont need to do a 360 with every song to keep the listener engaged IF u know your product is good, otherwise it looks like u are droping a bunch of songs that were left there at some point, to try to please as much ears as possible and u end up with smthing that doesnt have any coherence at all and that definetly doesn't allow the listener to enter an specific mood. But well people may have different opinions in this matter.

So like them tapping into this concept was def a risk. Idk it’s just IVE to me is chic, elegant yet modern ykwim? kpop albums are never beating the glorified playlist allegations i fear,, i can't name a recent project that i felt had a solid idea going into it and a cohesive theme behind each track.. even the title track doesn't fit with IVE's aesthetic (i only feel like 2 or 3 members really pull it off) and it feels like they're chasing this consumer-friendly sound that doesn't really impress like their previous tracks imo -- lowkey a letdown even though the songs have grew on me a bit

    (sorry for the mini rant but I love IVE so i'm passionate about this lmao) I'm so tired of Kpop releases having a complete lack of cohesion because Baddie should not be on the same album as Either Way and Off The Record, like whaaat??? The pre-releases had me thinking we would have a similar title track but it's like we drove off the road into a canyon. I prefer projects like Get Up by New Jeans or 28 Reasons by Seulgi where everything is in the same universe like there was a clear direction, not just being handed random songs and slapping them onto an album.

    • @Tenshikichi1
      @Tenshikichi1 Před 8 měsíci +8

      Get Up by New Jeans is a bad example since the first half of the album is a contrast of the second part. I don't like Baddie as much as the 2 other titles too but this is their way to attract more spectrum of fans ig. A lot of my favorite groups do this tactic of just putting every single genres possible on an album (SNSD, IZ*ONE, Lesserafim).

    • @Koko3op
      @Koko3op  Před 8 měsíci +16

      PREAAACH!
      What's even more frustrating is people then excusing it by saying "it's showing what the artists can do", no. It shows a lack of direction and being all over the place. Besides, everyone does that now, it's more special when things are cohesive.

    • @2FullMoons
      @2FullMoons Před 8 měsíci +10

      But IVE has always been like this. They never stuck to one particular sound or style for their titles, they are ALL different and it’s the case here as well where we have 3. They are not doing anything new in that sense. What does KITSCH & I AM have in common? Nothing. Their whole concept is ‘I HAVE’, it’s in their name, they are supposed to constantly show us something new and up until this point they have with their titles. After LIKE, ELEVEN, I AM, etc, they are ALL different from one another... If cohesive is what you want, then IVE has never ever been that kind of group.
      I agree that Baddie is their weakest title but looking at this era as a whole, I don’t even think they were trying to compete with their previous work. From the marketing, promo, singles choices, everything was handled differently and in an experimental manner for their usual standards. And honestly, they can, they just had the biggest release of 2023 in South Korea, I AM still being top 10 in 3 of the major charts, 6 months later. If there’s a time to experiment it’s now because they still have that success to ride on if this doesn’t work out.

      @@Tenshikichi1 (sorry for the super long reply I just love talking about stuff like this) New Jeans is breakbeat, Super Shy is Jersey Club, ETA is Baltimore Club, Cool With You is UK garage pop, these are all sounds that live in the drum & bass/electronic/house neighborhood. The only true deviations are Get Up and Asap but even then they still match pretty well sonically with the rest of the EP, and with New Jeans as a group and what they have built up over their career, at least to me, obviously every single song is not gonna sound the exact same but the fact that I can listen to Get Up and say, "yeah everything here makes sense for the concept, genre, and direction of the group" is what I call a success, in my personal opinion. I know it's a normal thing for Kpop groups to showcase a plethora of genres, I just wish they would explore genres one comeback/album at a time, not throw everything they possibly can into one project for the sake of attracting many audiences, bc no one wants to listen to 808s then a ballad right after. A different example I guess would be how IU deviated from her usual style and explored jazz, bossa nova, and other instrument heavy styles in her album Modern Times, it had a very clear direction (inspired by 1920s) and dived head first into the genres of that era, then she left it at that and moved on. Another example is The World EP 1: Movement by Ateez, a perfect example actually!! The entire album has a clear confident idea of what it is. Again I know Kpop is all about being versatile, I just want it to be done in a better way.

    My issue with Baddie is that the melody and lyrics require a girl group that does intense choreo and is known for having an assertive stage presence. Had the song been given to Itzy, aespa or XG, frex , then it would've come across as more fun/tongue-in-cheek.
    IMO, IVE isn't there (in terms of presence) and they don't excel at dancing. As a result, the song and MV leave some folks with a feeling of mehhhh.
