  • Good lighting is important for videos AND for sewing! Today I'm sharing a sewing hack for my lighting setup for sewing and explaining why I like to use this setup. While bright lighting really benefits low vision sewists, we can all benefit from cranking up the light over both our machines and sewing table!

    I used e6000 glue to glue a washer to the side of my sewing machine...its mechanical, not electronic. I bought an led magnetic light that sticks really well and i can adjust it. However, i also have a ceiling light and table lamp on in the evening when i sew. Oh, these 70 year old eyes!

      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem +1

      Someone else mentioned those led strip lights!! You might really like the addition of the grow lights Phyllis. It makes the whole work station bright and the lighted arms are easy to adjust. Yeah the older eyes are a challenge. And as the day goes on they have more and more difficulty focusing so that extra light really helps. Thanks for sharing your setup!

    I had Ott lights for sewing when I lived in Florida. Now I live in Northern Germany and I use full spectrum lightbulbs in the overhead lighting and in a lamp on the sewing table. My husband uses a full spectrum lamp by his chair and we have one in the bedroom and kitchen. I first bought the light bulbs to chase away the winter blues. This Florida girl needs light. We sometimes joke that it might look like we’re doing surgery in here!

    ThankU for addressing this issue PattyMac! After struggling far too long with weak lighting that prevented me from sewing much after dark, your episode inspired me to buy a new lamp! It was only 30$ at Aldi & came with 800 lumens bulb that casts an amazing glow to keep me working for hours overnite!! Called a "globe lamp" it stands 20" tall & is quite attractive actually, fitting in perfectly on my table, so thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!

    I struggled with sewing other than during the day because I needed the natural light. I purchased a duo- light from DayLight and it has been a game changer for me. It has two lights with 4 levels of brightness and the two lights can be adjusted independently of each other. Will be looking for a floor lamp as well soon. Thank you for your videos and generously sharing your knowledge and experience with us!

I have a pretty good size cutting table and I had to use 4 Ott lights on it before to get enough light. Now I have one Slimline 3 and it lights up the entire table. I use small bedroom for my sewing needs and I only had table lamps in there. So I got a big round ceiling light that has bunches of LED lights. It really brightens up my room and helps with my sewing machine also. We go to Florida twice a year and I like to take my sewing things with me. First time was miserable because of the incandescent lights. I bought a verelux smart light. The desk I sew on down there is a bit small so I chose the floor lamp. The base is a bit heavy but just takes a couple moments to get it where I want it and the flexible light really helps. It comes apart easily for packing & goes together so simple. I use it here sometimes for hand hemming or reading. Did you see yesterday with all that rain we got here in Virginia? I’m the Chesapeake lady.

      The rain here was crazy!! I put my buckets out and captured about 10". I had some minor flooding in the back yard, but nothing terrible. I'm so glad it stopped when it did, though. I have got major cleanup to do in the yard, but it will have to wait until after the next round of storms go through. I already miss the sunshine! I've heard great things about Verelux. It's pretty incredible the difference the lights make. You don't realize how much you're missing until you actually set them up. I remember you!!

      Thanks for sharing your setup with us Joanne! There's only so much a light on a sewing machine can do. Even a nicer machine like a Baby Lock is going to have some limitations in terms of the on board light. So having the extras makes all the difference in the world. I'm looking at something to use specifically on my cutting/work table now. We are socked in with dark and dreary skies this week so I really need those extra lights to see what I'm doing.

      Thanks Wendy! I'm trying to grow it out a little. The hair stylist wants to cut it super short so I have had to insist on not cutting so much off. I like the ease of it being shorter but I think a little bit longer softens my over all look. And YES the lights are completely cool with the LED bulbs. The other ones I had ran on those florescent bulbs which definitely put out some heat. The LEDs have a life span of about 40,000 hours which if I ran them 5 hours a day, 7 days a week, that 's still over 22 years of use, so they will definitely last me my lifetime. The grow lights are fantastic. I love them in the winter and just bought a second one. I may get a couple more to get us through the winter.

    I just bought one of those lights on a strip that you adhere to the underside of the sewing machine. I don’t like any shadows near the sewing machine foot. I have a lot of lights but it seems as though I can never have enough. I’ve only got one canned light on my ceiling (my room in 10’ x 8’ with a roof angle on one side. Maybe I need one of those hats with a light on it.

      I've seen those strips! I've wondered how they are. Yeah you can never have too many lights (or too much money 😅) A hiking headlamp might get the light right where you want it. As I often say to people, there's generally no absolutes in crafts and sewing, only what works for you. Thanks for the scoop. Lighting is important to accuracy for me. I don't recommend anyone buy an Ottlite product. They don't stand behind their products. I have been having problems with Ottlite products. I have several and their light switches break. They don't stand behind their products. They have unrealistic requirements such as Ottlight requires you keep the receipt inorder for replacement and has a 2 year limited warranty. Do you keep receipts for 2 years, just in case the product breaks Now a days, this is below commonly found practices by other companies.

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před rokem

      I keep all my receipts for purchases like this, but also I take things like this as a tax write off, so I need to keep everything. I generally like what I get from Ottlite but it's not bright enough on it's own. So I do think it's on the pricey side, but I've used their products for years and they have always been good for my needs. I do like the addition of the grow lights though for lighting up a much wider work space.
