Rokko isn’t just for bells. In 1-5 in a cave rokko allows the cat to run freely without rocks stopping it, and in 2-5 there is a part where there are two paths. One leads to a bell, but if you pick the wrong path you can use rokko, not just for the bell, but to avoid enemies too.
The only thing I can think of that would sort of be an additional special ability for Rokko is he could home in on rock type enemies that move too erratically for other helpers to hit.
