How to Grow Turnips in Just 10 Weeks | Step by Step Guide

- In this week by week video, we go through the steps needed to grow turnips, from seed.
Growing turnip is easy and can be grown in pots, raised beds or really any container you have laying around. They grow very quickly and can be harvested in as little as 10 weeks.
We're also multisowing these seeds, and not thinning out, which means we can grow more in a smaller area and extend it's harvesting.

This brings back memories of my late father who's been dead for about 13 years now. I remember as a child my dad would always plant a big row of turnips and I remember pulling them straight up out of the ground when they were young and small and they had an almost sweet taste to them. I didn't have much appreciation for my dad's efforts as a child but now that I've grown older I harken back to those days with fond memories. Now I'm attempting to do the same things that my father did. Thank you for the tutorial.

Really liked that you sowed several in a single plug and then let them grow together thinning out only at harvest. That answered a question I’d never thought to ask, but it really solved a looming issue.

I really appreciate the week-by-week updates! So many other videos I've seen skip from seeding to transplantation to several weeks of growth.
I planted my first ever turnip crop last week in my first garden bed in many years -- and my very first bed ever since moving to a hotter, drier climate. I'm glad to have something to compare them to, and I can be a little less of an anxious plant-mom now that I know they're right about where they should be -- little baby sprouts just budding their first true leaves.
Without Turnips life is nothing.
So this is what Jon Ronson has been up to :). Will be growing these for the first time this year in Sweden. Thx for the recipe

we are here in Estonia, after 14 days we plant the seedlings and after 50 - lates 60 days they are ready to harvest. 👍

I was really surprised at how well it went. I did leeks, turnips and beetroot this way. The leeks were the best by far and it looked like a mini forest at one point 😅

Cheeky foot shot! :))) I really like that garden bed. What is that? It looks like concrete, but far more bowl shaped than expected from a poured-in-frame process. Is it just the camera angle @ 4:12? Thanks for sharing. I subbed. I like the recipe after harvesting. Great idea to add that...farm to fork, so to speak.

I'm going to read the children's book 'The enormous Turnip' to my forest school cohort and then give them some seeds to grow their own in our veg patches 😍 this is a very nice easy to watch and follow vid. I have the confidence to get growing now. Not sure how enormous we can get them? What do you reckon? We cld leave some to just get enormous but not eat them if they get too woody 😅

Hey Mick. I use Charles Dowding post on multisowing often: charlesdowding.co.uk/multisow-to-enjoy-many-benefits/
Swedes aren't on the list, probably due to their size. However, he does multisow beetroot, which is also quite large.
My gut says "give it a go". Maybe sow some in the normal way elsewhere so you're guaranteed a harvest if it doesn't work out 👍

my turnips plants have started flowering and having pod like seeds.
i thought this is normal before harvesting. I have been checking from the time it has been bushy and all, but there was no turnip at all at the bottom!
why is that? can you explain please
The crop is rushing to develop seeds rather than producing a tasty root. Cut off the seed pods to encourage the crop to put energy into the root instead. This normally happens with a lack of water and hot weather

Apparently so yes, though I've not tried myself. I'd be interested to know what they taste like 👍
Yes the turnip leaves can be cooked as well . Very good southern meal. The leaves are cooked inna pot for about an hour or so and you add the turnips while cooking the greens. Delicious

You can over sow and you'll likely get lots of little turnips. Best to thin them out a little to give them each room
