    Sabanoh 75!!! I saw this band in 1979/80 in the Gambia. Sierra Leone music was rich in percussions, guitar harmonics and balanced singing. We got Wagadugu(easy dancing, Freetown Calypso),Bunny Mack(you're my sweetie,nothing sweets) with a genius producer Akie Dean.

    I remember this song, l was still in secondary school. I first heard this song at the famous Sanosco. It was a kios at the mobile gas station, at Blama Rd. Kenema. This song reminds me of my favorite members of Sabanoh 75. Eddie Isaac bass, Elmusay, solo guiter and Ema Beckley on keyboard.This was the good old days, when beer was less than 50c a pint. It puzzles me that, we don't have a live recorded tapes of this songs.

    What is this song about? I love this song but don't understand it.

    • @richardcaulker1017
      @richardcaulker1017 Před 3 lety +1

      It is about a young man who gets lost on his way to a village, and meets some young girls who are dwelling temporarily in the forest in order to be initiated into a women's secret society. They tell him that they need some work done in their hut, but there is no man around to do it, and they promise to pay him for the work.
      However when they get to the hut, girl Number 1 tells him to put "am", which means "it" in Krio, in her "konko", which is a word the band made up for the song as a substitute for the offensive Krio word "bombo" which means pussy. When he realises that all the girls are going to rape him, he starts to lament that if he spends the night there they will work him to death.
      It was rumoured that this song was based on a true story about a young guy who visited a girls' boarding home after visiting hours, and got gang raped all night there to the extent that he either died of exhaustion or nearly died.
      Personally I always found the song too rude, and I don't think the instrumental composition is great either. When it first came out in the 70s, some people at dances used to sing the chorus out loud while the DJ turned the volume down. These days I am told that some very indecent women point to their pussies while singing "put am nar me konko!" (I don't mingle much these days, even before Covid 19, so I have never actually witnessed such shameless displays of obscenity.)

      @@jthogg I am not having you on. 1 year ago I asked jokingly on this thread, "Wetin nar konko?", which means "What is konko?"
      Nobody answered either because noone took me seriously, or they wanted to keep the vulgarity of the song a secret from outsiders. The only reply was "Bo yusef," which is an expression of either disbelief or disapproval, meaning something like "Really?"
