  • Author continues to describe and demonstrate the transformation of a typical bassoon reed blank into a performance quality reed. Of particular note are: trimming the reed to a precise length and measuring & scraping the reed blades to a desired profile.
    The author provides a desired centerline thickness set of measurements. These measurement form smooth quadratic curves described by:
    y = -0.005x²+2.12x+9.9
    {y is the thickness in 0.001 inch - x is the distance from the tip in 1/16 inch}
    or
    y= -0.0005x²+0.034x+0.25
    {y is the thickness and x is the distance from the tip -- both in mm}
    The author also suggest 2 guides for reed adjustment:
    Selmer Teacher's Guide to the Bassoon by Homer Pence (1963)
    Unfortunately many web copies are missing a page in the reed adjustment section. Fortunately the reed adjustment section can be also be found in Selmer Bandwagon, 1962, vol 10, No 2, pp 10-14 at: www.saxophone....

    This is the 9th video in a series on bassoon reed making.
    For the curious -- yes, the reed featured in these videos turned out to be of performance quality. After a 2 week break in period where only minor adjustments were made, the author performed on this reed on the next 3 consecutive weekends (all 1st bassoon): 1) Romeo and Juliet Overture and Scheherezade, 2) Beethoven Octet, & 3) Nielsen Woodwind Quintet (1mvmt only) & Mozart Jupiter Symphony.
