  • Private Eye's Ian Hislop and LBC presenter Carol Vorderman give their theories on the Conservative Party's loss at the recent General Election.
    They discuss key factors that led to the party's defeat, including 'policy mistakes and campaign errors'. A major point of discussion was the loss of several senior Tories' seats, such as Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordant.

    The Tories WERE successful. They got richer we got poorer, they just did not think the serfs would rise up. Sunak has had a 120 million pound pay rise this last year according to the rich list, he has also managed to increase levels of child poverty in the U.K. beyond the already utterly unforgivable 30% during his office. These figures are government figures. He knows this and never cared enough to do something.

But how do you get the votes of a party that don't stand for anything, and why would you seek the votes of a party who's brand name is the opposite of yours ? I think Carol was right about Conservatives sense of entitlement, they thought they could get elected on certain promises, completely fail to deliver those promises, and still get reelected.

    The only number that matters with FPTP is MP's, not vote share. I am baffled why these seasoned journalists do not see that. If the leader is arrogant he will not be more arrogant if he won 45% of the vote compared to 35% if the MP's are the same number. It was interesting to see Rachel Johnson trying to bring in the doubt on the vote share and Labour support.

    What is so desperately sad is that these highly intelligent people just do not understand that politics is no longer fit for purpose. These discussions are about the intrigue of politics and NOTHING to do about running the country.

    • @CuriousCrow-mp4cx
      @CuriousCrow-mp4cx Před měsícem

      Politics is the process how any community decides who gets what. That means that exposing and dealing with the shenanigans of the power hungry is part of the process. Until one secures power, one cannot run it. So, choosing who will run the country comes before being able to run it. Separating the two is naive. In 2016 and 2019, the country fell for the Get Brexit Done shtick, which was nothing to do with running the country better. It was a load of rich people trying to get their way. And they won. And look at the result. Just getting rid of that bunch is a relief. Now, we have a government explicitly trying to serve the best interests of the country. In that, they've already begun to succeed.

    I think most MPs know if they do their job well and try hard the public will vote for them, they will advance and their pay will increase.
    The conservatives lost basic desires of need, they didn't care about the people and they didn't need the wage. They were rich out of touch and only cared for their own individual advancement and keeping their party in power at any cost. In other words, arrogant scoundrels and conmen.
