  • Lasers create a lot of fumes and if you don't have the option to vent outside, you might want an air filter so you're not breathing in all the fumes from cutting/engraving. I've spend some time with the Gweike Cloud air filter and it does a pretty good job of removing most of the fumes associated with using a laser. It's not perfect, but it's one of the best values on the market right now and can make using your laser quite a bit more pleasant. In this video, I compare most of the popular laser air filters on the market, show you the ins and outs of the Gweike Cloud filter, and give you my pros and cons on the unit.

    Thanks, Robert. This answers all of the questions I've been pestering you with. It sure looks like it would be pretty easy to use the exhaust port wire guard screws to attach an outlet adapter for a secondary exhaust hose. If only there were a machine that could make custom plastic adapters...

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před rokem

      Ha, right? But you're absolutely right, it would be really easy to adapt another hose. Additionally, putting this on a little relay extension cord and wiring that into the controller would be pretty easy too. I think I've seen some the do current sensing (they make these for woodworking dust extractors, detect when the router is on and turn on dust extractor). It's all there, I just wish they thought through these things a bit more. Also, the company told me they're considering selling the pre-filters separately.

    This is a great option for some situations. I use a box fan and high quality furnace filter system in my workspace to filter out dust and other particulates, but it does little or nothing for odor or fumes. For the odor i do have a couple of household grade HEPA filtration systems I found at local cheap shops, And filters do last a decent while and replacement elements are not too expensive. However for directed use for like an engraver they would get stuffed up really really fast. And by the looks they would not do nearly as good of a job. The money spent on one of these more industrial systems would be a must.

    I bought this setup back in 2019 for less than $200. That said, I got what I paid for. The fan wasn’t grounded, the filters were flammable, and the filter replacements were non existent. I went through it and re-wired and fused the blower, rigged the plug to turn on when cutting, found an online custom hepa filter company to make new fine particle filters. The big find was the coconut carbon filter pellets which came in a nice mesh bag to drop in really cheap. The one thing you MUST do with these inexpensive filters is to buy a stainless fine metal mesh sheet to put on top of all the filters. One burning ember will incinerate the entire filter array. I still use it and all my filters are less than $100.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před rokem

      Good to know. Regarding the 'ember', I think that's a 1 in a million chance. The airflow of these fans is enough that nearly anything will get extinguished well before it hits the filter stack. I have serious doubts about anything entering through the back of the laser, traveling through the house and entering the top stack with enough heat/energy to cause ignition to a secondary object.

    The way I have my work area set up, it would be more convenient to set the air filter on it's side. Can that be done or should it stay vertical on it's wheels?

    Great video, Can you still vent outside after filtration? does it come with an adapter for this.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před 5 měsíci

      You absolutely can, but you'd need to make your own adapter as it does not come with one. There's just a vent cover on the exhaust, you could unscrew it and adapt it to a hose. You'd need to find something that works, or 3d print a solution.

  • @gaiustacitus4242
    @gaiustacitus4242 Před 3 měsíci

    With very light hobby use the filter packs will last 3 to 6 months. However, if you use the laser 8 hours per day, then the filters will only last 2 to 4 weeks (depending on the material). At $150 per filter pack, the maximum annual expense for filters is $3,900. This cost is comparable to filters for systems from some other manufacturers, though costs can be significantly higher.
    The filter size does not help with life expectancy. The reason is that only a small portion of the filters is ever used (the area directly in line with the intake hose).
    I've yet to see a review of any of these low-cost units where they are subjected to heavy long-term use. Given such units incorporate light duty fan motors, I would expect failure in a relatively short time. I would love to see durability testing performed.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah, I'd agree with everything you say. I think for hobby use, it's a good choice. For industrial use, I'd go with a Bofa or something made more for heavier use.

  • @emberprototypes
    @emberprototypes Před rokem

    Interesting didn't know they made their own filter unit! We have a BOFA AD350 which looks like the same one you compared to. It does a decent job for our 100W laser, but we modified the exhaust so it vents filtered air out of our workspace, as it doesnt filter out VOCs perfectly.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před rokem +1

      Yep, that seems to be the way to go. I think having it as a first-stage filter to remove/capture the bulk of the smoke and smell is a great idea.

      @emberprototypes Před rokem

      @@RobertCowanDIY 100%! I don't like the idea of venting totally unfiltered air out into the environment. Just doesn't seem like a nice thing to do. I might post the 3D print up on Printables today in case it comes in handy for others...who knows, maybe we could even sell these to people as an off the shelf solution!

    Will this unit filter the smell from leather if you were using it in a home, or would you still want to put it through this and still vent that outside?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před rokem

      I haven't cut leather with it, but I suspect you'll still get SOME smell through it. I can see if my wife has any leather pieces I could test with. Plastics give off really nasty chemicals, but leather is just more potent I guess. I'd just honestly have to try it and let you know. But as I said in the video, it's never really 100%, except for really short/simple jobs. With a short cut on wood or cardboard, there's almost no detectable smell, as long as you don't keep the lid open too long, etc. Most of the smell is just from the thing you cut.

    Are you still using this fume extractor and happy with it? Looking for something for my fiber laser

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes! I still have it and very much like it. Check out one of my more recent videos, I made a 3d printed exhaust duct that I can switch between my CO2 and fiber lasers. I really like having it.

  • @BestUnderPressure
    @BestUnderPressure Před rokem

    I'd be interested to see you find a signal off the laser to control a relay to switch on the fume extractor. I have a fume extractor at my office in a totally enclosed room. No way to vent to the outside world easily.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před rokem

      I looked up the controller model, and there are a few relay pins, it would be fairly straightforward. I just wish the air filter had some sort of relay control built-in. You can get power strips or outlets with a trigger input, it would be a fairly simple task to tie those two things together.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Před 5 měsíci

      Of course it would! I use mine with my P2. You might just need to come up with a custom fitting for the hose (I just 3d printed one, super easy). Check out my video later today, that's what it's about.

      It looks like they took the feedback and started including extras. You only use 1, but they can get used up fairly quickly, so they included extras, that's nice.

    Great video, especially the product comparison. I decided to purchase the Gweiki Cloud Air Filter based on Price, Size, cost of replacement filters, and how quiet it was. Sadly the discount code is no longer valid or at least it did not work for me.
    The Air Filter arrived within two weeks of purchase. Package was tightly wrapped in shrink wrap as was the interior packaging. Unfortunately there was no manual but there were two additional Pre-Stage filters in with the protective foam packaging. There were three Pre-Stage filters inside the Air Filter for a total of 5 Pre-Stage filters.
    I recently watched the Gweiki Live Stream video on this Air Filter (czcams.com/video/IWaW0QPQ5hA/video.html ), at about 15:00 they open the unit and talk about the filters. It seems like they are using only one Pre-Stage filter. They also mention that the unit is shipped with 4 spare Pre-Stage filters. I'm not sure if I should be using one Pre-Stage filter as they appear to be doing or three as you have shown.
    I have not yet ordered replace filters but I'm interested to see how many Pre-Stage filters it comes with.
