My mom was lucky. She told me a few years ago that she was 5 years old when my grandmother took her and my uncles to the Apollo Theater to where J5 opened up for James Brown. It had to be around their first album and first TV appearances. MJ was a force to be reckon with, and he _still_ is. But I will give credit where it's due. Joe Jackson saw the vision that his sons had potential and he was right. Aside from the other issues concerning him, he did what he had to do in order for his family to thrive and survive. You will _never_ seen a family group or it's lead singer on the caliber we've witnessed with this clan. The boomers' and the hip hop generation/MTV generation witnessed what MJ was becoming in just a few short years. And remember _three_ of the biggest stars were black when MJ was dominating the globe.

I grew up with the J5, and no thought of racism. We were poor and white. My favorite music to this day is Motown, R&B.
I didn’t like the negative msgs. of a lot of the rap singers. Money, guns, gangster life.
Michael was a pure loving person, and a wonderful father. I literally sobbed and was angry when he died. The Doctor did him wrong and he was black. Why is racism so much a thing today?
Didn’t stop Michaels family, Ben Carson or Obama. I have visited his funeral site with flowers several times, and took my young white son as well to let him know one of the most important people in my life and the world was gone to soon. It still hurts to this day.
Feel the same sadness with princess Diana.
Hopefully, we can all move on over this racism issue instead of it dividing this nation.
      Racism goes both ways.
A black man destroyed my life, and my sons but I don’t care what color he was, he was just mean spirited and a racist.

Supposedly this was their first televised appearance. I was just imagining their mom watching them on t.v. According to the mini series, The Jackson An American Dream, they showed her watching them at home live with her Mom and other children etc. I really tried putting myself in her shoes at that moment. It must've been incredibly gratifying to see her son's on such a stage. Then of course we all know the rest of the story, legends in the making here. My God there will NEVER be anyone as incredible of a performer as Michael Jackson and his fame in the 1980s was absolutely insane, if you weren't around to experience it, its very difficult to try explain to people just how insanely famous he was. No one has ever come close since Michael. Before him it was Elvis then Michael just went ballistic. I am so so so very grateful to have been 13-14 years old during 1983. That year Michael Jackson was just beyond famous it truly was crazy.. I'm glad I was around to see him at various stages of his career. From child prodigy to master craftsman of his art form. Wow, just wow, rest easy Mike I'm sure your at peace and in the arms of Angels 😇

And these brothers played their own instruments..this was live, the first song no lip syncing. And props to Johnny on drums, Ronny, on keys. They were (our) Beatles, The Jackson 5ive set the stage for many young start up bands. Of course little Mike, was the star but them brothers were equally talented, and the band was tight. Sadly today, we only have a handful of amazing talent. Our kids today don’t have the musical work ethic, like a Jackson 5ive. Today it’s all studio enhanced, repetitive sounds. The live shows are special effects, and digital extravaganzas, to hide the non talented performers. Acts like Bruno Mars give me hope, because you see the showmanship, backed with a tight band. T-Pain the rapper, is actually one of the best vocalist today, but that talent takes a backseat to his HipHop career. I give props to musically gifted, not the posers.

I completely understand now as an adult why Diana Ross was put in the place of "discovering" J5. In hindsight, it made a lot of sense. She was drifting off from her group as a solo artist and J5 was the _next big thing_ so it made sense why Motown placed her in that role. And thus MJ's love for Diana began here. The miniseries recreated this scene down to a T.
