In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 2 hour plant chores video! I imported some plants recently and they've not all acclimated as planned, so some major plant rehabilitation is in order. There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. I enjoy seeing my plants individually rather than a mass of green. Obviously I must have fewer plants but that’s ok with me because I have a 400 square foot tiny house and I’m 80 years old. I have 21 med to large plants inside. Donna
I've been making my way through your long videos in random order, and I'm so happy to have stumbled on the origin story of the rug!
For a tall pot, find a nice wastebasket. They tend to be taller and narrower than plant pots.
And even if it isn’t that nice, you could use a rope basket as a cover pot, which would go with your aesthetic. 😊 I put a plastic saucer on the bottom of the rope basket to catch residual water and that way you could drill drainage holes in the wastebasket.
Hang your rug over several chairs inside the flat and it will dry and raise the humidity at the same time. Obviously not if it is dripping. LOL
Well, Thai constellation is a Tissue Culture plant. As the name suggests, it was created in the laboratory in Thailand and you can't find it in the wild. So all Thai constellation plants are supposed to be tissue cultured.
HINT ... Put your alcohol and water in a spray bottle and spray them on the balcony. You can do that with your horticultural soap also. It makes it easier to to treat them thoroughly then you can wipe down the leaves to get rid of the water spots.
Right! Like it needs to get into every crevice of the plant and even on the pot to ensure they are all gone.
I also tend to spray down my plants but I know lots of people who like to individually wipe down each leaf. And I think that if Claire has been able to have a nice large collection, then that must be working well for her.
Hi Claire, I've mentioned this before, but I've also got ADHD. Since living on my own for the first time, I've been trying to balance a need for minimalism (due to getting overwhelmed easily) and a need for warmth in the home. I've got all my books, cat stuff, crafting stuff... in a sideboard behind closed doors. There are no photos anywhere, but three minimalistic pictures. There's no knick-knacks, no hanging curtains, and airy furniture that is small enough to fit my space comfortably. Most of my furniture and accessories are in neutral colours, but I use sleek colourful plant pots to add a touch of colour here and there. I still get overwhelmed, but it makes such a difference! I've also got everything I possibly can mounted on the walls to free up floor space: the aforementioned sideboard, the bathroom cabinets, the TV stand, the bin... When buying new things, I like to research for months to find the right item for my space, taste, and budget. This way I can make sure I don't impulse buy unneeded stuff.
Everybody's different of course. I wish you the best of luck on your decluttering journey. It might seem daunting at first, but oh, the benefits you will reap!
I have ADHD too, and the past few months in terms of plant care have been pretty overwhelming. As a newbie plant mom I had my first ever thrips infestation and then immediately my first winter came, I struggled to keep my plants alive and I lost a couple of my favourites. BUT! I managed to save my calathea makoyana (thrips + root rot), and it’s giving me new leaves already! My gloriosum under a growlight has been giving me its biggest leaves yet, and a silver sword that lost all of its leaves during the infestation - I saved the bottom of it with all of the roots and it’s the cutest baby plant. My baby florida ghost reset itself BUT did not die, and is growing new leaves. I successfully sprouted a dozen of pomelo seeds and an avocado plant. And my adenium obesum that I was so scared to cut gave me four branches as a reward! I’m still learning to deal with the losses I experience but the little wins make them more bearable. Baby steps.

Maintenance is the key for keeping spider mites at bay. I love alocasias and have some that are 4 feet tall. Every month they go into the shower and their leaves are blasted with horticultural soap every time. I am glad to hear you are considering downsizing your collection. I know it is hard for you, but seriously, honestly who needs 8 of one plant? Good luck with your 2024 goals and minimizing. ( you need room and time for Ross)

same, its rather cathartic to be cleaning up plants and sad for the ones not doing well, and feel less like only me who struggles keeping things looking good right now. Its like having a good pal working alongside me.

I get overwhelmed too so I suppose that’s why I felt triggered. 😂 It’s hard to just let things go but I encourage you to not overthink. If it’s a lot of back and forth then bin it! If you really miss it then repurchase it down the road. This is just an opinion offered in compassion and care.
My husband and I were sick with covid over the holidays I didn't get to do any planty stuff, either, for 3 weeks. I just couldn't get the energy to take care of anything while I was taking care of myself. thank goodness it had been raining lately and temperature dropped quite bit in Los Angeles so a lot of my plants were fine. . I actually got a Millsbo greenhouse cabinet for Xmas but I can't get myself to assemble it yet. I desperately need a reset like you did. I know you like to go the natural route with your pest treatments, but since you seem to have issues with pests constantly it might be worth using a systemic pesticide on all your plants as a reset once to make it more managable. Especially on your alocasia portodora since it will prevent pests from coming back for some time, so the plant will have time to settle in an hopefully grow more resiliant
I was just about to recommend a systemic pesticide too! I bought a croton from a big box store and it had spider mites very soon after. I treated it many times with soaps but nothing helped to end the constant spider mite attacks. Then I sprayed it with a systemic and kept on spraying every few months. Now for almost a year there haven't been spider mites. I also make sure to pest treat it once it comes back home from it's summer vacation at my balcony😎 Not every pest treatment has to be systemic but to stop those vicious cycles... Also if Claire has taken the alocasia out of the milsbo, then the systemic shouldn't hurt the beneficial insects?!
For as long as it's not spidermites, spidermites can actually get worse with systemic pesticides due to one of the chemicals promoting mating in Spidermites specifically.

Watching your plant chore videos and similar content gets me motivated to get my to-do’s done. Laundry, dishes, sweep mop, cleaning my bunny’s area. I only have 6 plants in my collection but ugh we’ve be infiltrated by stink bugs. Every time I see one my souls nearly escapes me!!! HATE is not strong enough of a word on how I feel about those things!!! 😂😢
When my Hoyas won’t hydrate and the leaves stay that way they usually have root rot
I had strep throat a few days before Christmas was a nightmare. I think alot of people got sick during winter seasons. Hope Ross is feeling better now sound so sore the fall that he had. I have done alot of plant purge in 2023 as i want to start off fresh 2024 focusing more on the plants that i love and take care on them more. This winter i notice more yellowing leaves on my Hoya’s for some reason. Especially on my Hoya Deykeae which i lost 3 leaves which i was so sad about. Since it took a long time given me 3 leaves last summer. After seeing your Euphoria Acrurensis i came across it in my plant nursery in town after checking out their website and went and got one which i was so excited about. I am still on the hunt for the variegated Euphoria Ingens one which I haven’t found one that i love in person to purchase. Also the white ghost lactea also on the search for. I find with these expensive plants you need to get it in person to choose the one that you love. I have fallen out of buying plants online now since always disappointing of the outcome. I always enjoy seeing your dog in your channel we really want a dog aswell. Maybe one day we will. I rather have a house with a pet since i am living in a duplex apartment with 4 flights of stairs very tiring going up and down. Also easy to put them in the garden to choose the bathroom early mornings and evenings especially.

Just be aware that mealy bug infestations usually start in the roots and then you notice them when they lay eggs and feed on the leaves 🙂
1:51:28 They don’t die in the spring. I’ve kept mine and even if it drops leaves, they can grow back in the same spot on the stems. I kind of love the mat velvety green leaves 😊
Alcohol and water in spray bottle. Drench it! For mealy bugs!

For Spidermites I sprayed my calathea with neemoil a few times and quarantined her for 2,5 weeks. Nothing since then!
I really think it's worth having a little pop up tent for quaratining infected plants (obviously not for huge plants but those I feel are usually pretty resiliant and can get over pests with minimal help)

I started my planty reset over the holidays too, time to purge what I’m not excited about, care for the ones I am, clean, reorganize, reset ❤ I felt that plant burnout this late fall, I was grateful to have the love pick up again to do the reset, now I’m obsessed again!

For the Philodendron Esmeraldense: I also had that with a Philodendron. But the new vine that grew from the wetstick grew his own little arialroots and survived! Hopefully, your's will do the same.🤞🏻

For spidermites, to get rid of them completely, only thing that helped me was careo combi sticks, if you can get it in UK I highly recommend it. I know it is a pesticide , but it is great for the plants that you really struggle with, and it is very easy to use since you dont need to spray anything. You just put it in soil and within few weeks all of the spidermites are gone, same with thrips.

For your problem of plants in isolation and lack of space, you can put them in a transparent plastic bag the right size for the plants and put them back in your cabinet. This way, the leaves won't touch and the plant will have plenty of moisture to regain its strength and grow again. As soon as there's a new leaf with no sign of mite bites, it's a success.
I got through so many plant chores while watching, including making three moss poles and also cleaning my mat - thank you for the inspiration and motivation!
Oh Clair, thank you so much for this video! After the last few days I really needed just to quite my mind. I'm currently sitting here in my home in Canada with heaters going so my plants don't get cold. I don't care if I freeze as long as I can keep my pets and plants warm! My furnace quit working 2 days ago and my husband can't get home till Sunday to fix it! You were just what I needed!❤

My household was sick after Christmas through the New Year. My husband had the flu, my daughter’s boyfriend caught it as well. But then my daughter went back home and she came down with COVID. I managed to dodge both illnesses, I don’t do well with COVID. Haven’t caught the flu in a few years. (knocking on wood) I kept looking for a video from you, was so happy now that you uploaded.
I absolutely admire your Dean McDowell… I purchased one off of Etsy from a seller I thought I could trust. I had made several purchases from them without incident. I got a very juvenile plant so couldn’t tell what it was or wasn’t. They sent me a Philodendron Summer Glory! Ugh, never purchasing from that store again. At least it was at a good low price. I’ll end up buying one in a couple of months and hopefully grow one like yours!
You will always get spider mites because they come from outside. Use a systemic. They are just more attracted to certain species.

With adhd all I can say is just remember you are trying your best and to be patient with yourself
It is easy to get into a doom loop of not feeling like you are doing enough but sometimes you just need more time to recover and there is grace for all of it if you wouldn’t get frustrated with a friend or loved one for things then don’t get mad at yourself

55:50 I had a cutting of my albo that was poorly cut on my end .. but there was node and potential growth point, so I decided to prop it with rest of the cutting. After a long while it gave me a leaf! However when I checked the cutting it had no roots :/ I kept at it anyways. Now it has two fuzzy roots that emerged from the point where the new growth happened and it found its way down to the propagation solution. My propagations were in a semi hydro situation in aquaSolum and I only noticed the growth spurts when I needed to be away and filled the cup a bit too full (where the water was slightly touching the cutting)

The silver Hoya may need to get repotted. So when they aren’t plumping back up after a watering it may mean root rot. It literally just happened to mine and I researched and sounds like that’s what may be going on. I’m so sad because mine was so lush and now they’re all shriveling up 😩
I just got an alocasia regale shield a couple of days ago. In my research on how to care for her, I found your channel. You have given me so much more confidence in my plant care journey. At the moment, I have about 60 house plants. Most are doing good, but I'm always learning. Thank you for your channel! ❤
I have used a plastic trash can as a pot before! Target has cute smaller ones that you can drill holes in for drainage! My alocasias always have spider mites too! I don’t know why they are so prone to them!
Watching other people doing stuff really motivates me to do something aswell. Especially when it comes to cleaning and plants . I wish it would work for doing a workout too😂 in general I remind myself that the things I want to do are not as big of a thing my mind is making it to be and I use an App to remind me on tasks I want to do regularly and every time i feel lazy and bored I look at it and do at least one thing that is listed before giving into the laziness.
So far i've been liking superthrive ( is not a fertilizer btw but an extra additive you can use with feed), been using it for my anthuriums at every watering through the winter (UK) and they have been growing non-stop. I'm unsure if it's all thanks to superthrive alone but it's possibly part of it. What I got more of a clear experience with is importing, I found it really helps with preventing transplant shock + acclimation
I absolutely agree with the fact that pets come into contact plants in the wild all the time and most are toxic!
I have two cats and they’ve NEVER eaten or messed with a plant other than casually checking them out, the occasional nudge on a leaf or a stroll through the jungle of plant stands playing hide and seek.
I feel like as long as your pet isn’t constantly chomping on foliage or digging plants up, they don’t even care about them. In some cases though, I’ve seen some pets be naughty on purpose trying to get attention. lol so I guess it just depends on the pet and their view on your pet to plant ratio 😂😂😂

I’ve had Exactly the same problem with my Hoya Silver Splash! Have the reached the point of giving up and binning it.
I use Super Thrive with every watering and also mixed with fertilizer when I fertilize once a month
My Thai is in Leca and it's doing great.

I had similar Xmas holiday as you. Me and my partner had a terrible infection so we had to cancel family meeting and stayed at home. We prepared a basic traditional Xmas Eve dinner and spent most of the time resting in bed with our dog and two cats. Now frosty winter came(-10 C) and to be honest it's difficult to motivate myself to do a proper plant care. I have to monitor my silver cloud philo due to spider mites. What cheers me up it's my collection of cymbidium orchids in full bloom now :) Happy and prosperous 2024!

I did treat myself to my other wishlist plant in the black friday sale Grow Tropicals had and bought a baby Frydek for a great price. Transferred her to pon just before xmas, so losing a leaf, but hoping she grows nice and big this year 😃

Some people use shower to wash em, or lint brush as well as I've used a vaccum depending on the plant to get rid of pests....depends on the pest too 💚🪴
My painted lady looks very similar and I'm with you about not having the passion and urge to moving it to a moss pole because it's a lot of effort.....
I also use the 5 minute rule to motivate myself do a small number of tasks but once I get started I always do more, that way on those days or nights I don't feel like it's a right off...
What you could try with your big Alocasia Portodora in the future before parting with it, is growing it outside in summer and keeping it as a corm inside for winter
I have used Superthrive. I diluted by half and used it every watering on plants that were growing. I thought it worked well.
My Thai constellation cutting (it was just as expensive as a Baby/ small plant. No preference between cuttings or baby plants or TC) is growing in pon and it loves it. Easy to monitor and no root rot, except for one of the big areal roots it came with (it came super well rooted in moss).
