    My first proper mountain bike was a DMR trailstar, I live to see DMR getting some love from one of my favourite cycling CZcamsrs!

    I'm 6'7"/2m so I rode big frames and a lot of the second hand forks I bought had short steerers. I used to take Red Neck BMX stems and throw it in the mill and ream it out to 1 1/8". Sometimes I'd attack it gently with a 7/8" ball end mill to add lightness.

    That's great for us "if a job is worth doing, it's worth measuring once & cutting twice" folks.

    I really wish I knew this info sooner! This was super helpful and I’m glad this solution exists. The price is quite high though and I wish there were longer stem options but maybe it would be too much leverage with that short of a stack height. I hope this video hits the right algorithm and gets tons of views. I feel this issue happens way more often, especially with how easy it is to buy used forks thanks to the ease of the internet.

    I have dmr stems on all my bikes , not because my steering tube is too short but it has the rise I’m looking for , the looks , stiff and no creaking and I like the no gap top clamp . Ive been a fan of Dmr since I started Mtb , I’ve owned two of their frames and my current bike has dmr pedals , grips and stem . I have the handlebars but I like a little more back sweep than 8 degrees .

      I like this stem for the same reason, my steerer is not too short

    Those cheap wake stems off Amazon also have a really short stack height if the dmr is more than you want to spend .

    I did this exact thing about a year ago - bought second hand fox factory forks, neglected to look at the steerer tube dimensions in the ad, needed a solution, found this stem and was able to make eveything work. Even have a small spacer!

    Went from a size small to size large frame of the same model Transition and this was the only way to reuse the fork. They’re really a great solution.

    I put one on my Mountain Cycle San Andreas that I am restomoding. Because yeah, the Steerer was to short. This thing is going to break the Vintage bike internet. Wanna do a video on it?

    i wish i left my steerer tube longer as i'm now toying with the idea of double stems to have a rigid connection to the handlebar bag

  • @celynjones4958
    @celynjones4958 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Bought exactly this stem for this reason, too. Great product but it made my already high rise bars too slammed and got sore hards. Solution, fork steerer extender. Works like an extra long expanding top cap. So far it's been great. Cheers ❤ Btw my fork was 2nd hand, and yes, I also wish DMR made the Defy with a bit higher rise and longer reach for the flats and climbing as it's rather twitchy, too.

    @MrBenjintheengine Před 10 měsíci

    Yeah that's good to know I bought a second hand fork that had been cut and was too short for the stack on a regular stem, I ended up buying surly sunrise bars and a bmx stem with a low stack height if I'd known about this stem or been able to find any other low stack stems I would have preferred it

  • @PloCnik
    @PloCnik Před 10 měsíci

    I could've sworn I saw some specialty shop in UK doing steerer tube replacements and thought of that syntace stem of yours a while ago. Probably not worth it for regular forks, but for nice kashima ones...

  • @rsmithuk
    @rsmithuk Před 10 měsíci

    Or, get a new steerer pressed into your fork. (If you have nothing or not a lot to clamp to). Not sure on the options in the US but in the UK, costs just over £100 for a new steerer.

    There are steerer tube extensions, their mechanism is similar to a carbon-specific expander plug.
    Idk how well they work, but I haven't heard of failures

    How is it that in my "3rd world msrket" country I have the option of putting a new steer tube, and it hasn't even been an option for you? Just wonder... no one offers that service in Canada?

  • @kipcc3918
    @kipcc3918 Před 10 měsíci

    There is one solution, it gives you about/almost 80mm of extension. Downside is it’s very tricky to install.
    Amazon has a Steerer tube extender, It works like a expander plug plus extra length for the cut steerer tube.
    Downside is, I might be doing something wrong on the install that it still slips slightly, Might just be too heavy for the thing. 😅

  • @TryboBike
