    While done by legends in the their own rights (both of whom I Greatly admire), it actually shows the power of Jolson's significance. Their wonderful tribute is not even close to the actual Jolson performances of any of the tunes presented.

    • @LazlosPlane
      @LazlosPlane Před 8 lety +2

      +TheLeondo1 To render anything close to what a Jolson performance was like would have been impossible. However, I think it's interesting that the audience bursts into applause as Dean went to one knee. Shows at this time Jolson's legacy was still alive and respected. That would change drastically shortly after, to where the name "Jolson," was anathema.

    • @candlebuckstudios3181

      I suspect both realized there was no gain from trying to put the Jolson energy into their performance; better to do it in their own styles than appear even more lame by attempting something that no one but Jolson could have pulled off.

      He was a stern father like any other father in the 30s and by standards of the 30s he did a normal amount. Today, we would consider any father from the 30s to be abusive. His son Gary wrote the book shortly after Mommy Dearest came out and another brother denied that Bing had abused them in such harsh manners. The other brother said that he was a stern father but not a monster. There is no evidence that Bing Crosby beat his kids except for the story of one son that is discredited by the other.

    GRAD SCHOOL.
    Note that their intonation as singers is pitch-perfect.
    Note that each of them, members of two of the "loosest" comedy teams in film history (Martin & Lewis, Hope & Crosby), actually start to improvise toward the end.
    Note that Jolson, the First White Guy With Soul, infuses everything they do.

    Charles Taylor - Steven Torrey may have phrased his comment in-artfully but Bing and Dinos version, while a great tribute, are sung in their own style, which lacked the electricity and verve of Jolson's rendition. That's not a knock on them - its a statement about the greatness of Jolson. There is a REASON why Bing idolized Jolie and had him as a guest on his radio show so many times.
