I have the audiobook version and it’s AMAZING! Never truly appreciated how much George Steinbrenner sabotaged my dear Yankees. It’s such a good book which does a great job of deconstructing the Yankees mythology around George, the 90s dynasty, and more. As a historian myself, I appreciate debunking the “Great Men of History” hypothesis. It truly took a village to create the Yankees and Martino excels at showing this

I keep hearing that cashman is an automatic lock for hall of fame and that fans are idiots for not recognizing and appreciating his greatness. Well given the ginormous payroll - I’m sorry you have gotta do better than have a winning season year in and year out. How can you at Yankee stadium decide that it is not important to have good lefty bats? How can you decide or be in agreement that only exit velocity matters and that strikeouts are fine? This reeks of arrogance and stupidity and this I pin on cashman.

He has been very successful overall. But he and the Steinbrenner’s created the impression that rings are all that matter. And he has failed at that for quite a while. I think we would be more willing to look past that if it seemed like they hit the Judge window harder. Judge is an elite HOF talent (whether he gets in or not based on age at debut is a different question). Stanton and Cole are the only real adds in his career until Soto this season. Missing on all of Harper, Olson, Freeman, Machado and Seager was unforgivable. This team has been fantastic to start this year. But just imagine how much better they’d be if they had a true secondary lefty in Harper or Seager instead of Rizzo or whoever we run out at 3B any given day. I’ll never forgive him for Harper, whose deal looks like an absolute steal and has no opt outs. Soto, Judge, Harper as 2-4 with Stanton behind Harper is what the Yankees should have. And Cashman’s quotes on why not Harper are still ridiculous.

Additionally, as a Yankees fan, how do you get behind an organization (with Cashman at the helm) that thinks the future of baseball is with having a whole team of players that do the same thing (i.e. swing for the fences no matter what and strike out very often in the process). How do you get behind a team that does not value contact hitting ever and does not value defense or speed or youth? How do you get behind a team that does not value situational hitting, moving the guy over, being able to sacrifice, and pass the baton, and who plays for running on contact with a guy on third base no matter where the ball is hit even when that policy is not working? How do you get behind a team (with Cashman at the helm) who values exit velocity and launch angle at the exclusion of any other stat such as contact rate or batting average or on base percentage even? I give Yanks credit for course correcting lately but you've got to be a moron not to recognize that these philosophies are idiotic. Most of the fan base realized this long before Cashman and the organization ever did. So, Hall of Fame caliber for Cashman? Maybe so, given what I hear based on Michael Kay (homer/company man) and posts like this but there is another side that needs to be heard.

It does not sound like a balanced view, cashman mouthpiece or not, this book of Martino's. I am a Yankees fan but I see through BS and do not want to read something that does not give a balanced picture even if there are some excellent and entertaining behind the scenes stories.

I don’t want Alonso anymore, unless he’ll sign for 4 years max. Why not break up this team as much as possible, where you can?

Yankee fans will greatly miss Cashman once he's gone and suddenly they're having losing seasons, or they can no longer create successful bullpens out of vapor.
