- Slovak patriotic song "Kto za pravdu horí" ("Who Burns for the Truth") or "Sláva šlachotným" were written by Slovak evangelical priest Karol Kuzmány in 1848 and became one of the national anthems of Slovakia. Song became most popular in 1918 in Czechoslovak indepence movement from Austria-Hungary, but finally "Nad Tatrou sa blýska" became official anthem.

A to bez diskuze...
I'm always so happy to hear this song, but what's with all the "it's a Slovak, not Czechoslovak song" comments? This very song is about humanism, not nationalism. It so beautifully underlines the idea of standing for what is right, true and just, sentiments that both our nations stood for together, at the time it was written, without claiming any exclusivity to them. Our Motto always was "... But if on our door a foreign hand knocks with honest intent, be he who he may, be he from far or near by, be it day or night, godly gifts (bread and salt) will always await him at out table..." This song was adpoted as the anthem of the partisans and the uprising during WW2, in which we had help from people all across the world, not to defend any delluded ideas of nationalism, but to stand for what was right, and to stand for all people, everywhere in the world, againt injustice and opression.

A ešte :
Pán boh šľachetnosti nebo vystavil,
večné on pre podlosť peklo podpálil;
kto ctí pravdy božskej božské zákony:
tomu moja pieseň slávou zazvoní.
This is Slovak song.
this is NOT czeschoslovak :) it was written by slovak patriotic author Karol Kuzmany and published by him in Slovak patrotic paper Orol tatranský, at 4th of april 1848 thanks ...
Tak!
Sad that it didn't became the anthem of Slovakia, because then there wouldn't be an arguement about the Slovak National Anthem, between the Hungarians and Slovaks(I'm Hungarian but I don't support any of the sides of this argument because 'Who the hell cares about it, honestly?')
If someone didn't knew. Basicly there's a non-existent argument between Slovaks and Hungarians about the Anthem of Slovakia(but that's not the only argument they have between eachother)
Most of the Hungarians claimd that the anthem is a copy of a Hungarian folk song. While some Slovaks might argue that the folk song is a copy of a Slovak folk song.
The main problem is that nobody would find an evidence of which side says the truth(perhaps none of them do?). Or if there would be an evidence for it the other side would automaticly claim that the evidence is fake AF.
That's why I don't participate in this *bullshit*
Becuase I don't give a fuck about the whole thing.
So yeah, if this song would been choosed to be the Slovak National Anthem, things would go differnetly. But then there's still many other arguments. So it wouldn't really help honestly.
I am Slovak and I have never heard someone talking about copying folk song. From I have learned in school, melody in Nad Tatrou Sa Blýska ( anthem that is being used today), is from Kopala studienku (another folk song).
We have pretty similiar folk stuff, so its very likely that Slovak song could be sung in Hungarian (of course it could be the opposite) .
I think that the whole argument is, just like you said, bullshit. Instead we should be proud, that we have similiar and diversed culture.
Its simple slovak anthem 1844 , hungarian song in that melody start od 20th century :)
Dokaz je a dosť podstatný
Neni Československá vznikla okolo roku 1848 na Slovensku
Dal by som zakázať akýkolvek koment lebo to nepotrebuje koment ...a ked už ...je to slovenská hymnická pieseň .
great song, but no english sub
Who hath the truth in the holy sacrifice,
Who for humanity has the right to life of the saints,
Who on injustice of misarables would tears a tear:
To him my song will ring with glory.
When the cannons thunders, the eagle will burst,
For the liberty of the one who pours blood,
In front of a fiery dragon, who the homeland frowns,
To him my song will ring with glory.
Who for righteousness burns, in holly sacrifice,
Who for right of men kind will sanctify life,
Who at the injustice of the opressed a tear will shed,
To him my song, glorifies in cheer
When the batteries thunder, the eagle screeches,
For beloved freedom who will spill blood, against a fire drake who shields his nation, to him my song with
glory will cheer.
