@vickyabramowitz2885 Agreed, but not only the aristocracy but all up and down the social scale🎹. Reading history bears this out. And sadly, one could make a strong case that it's rampant now and we even have the methods of preventing and, failing that, effectively (for the most part) treating it. Arguably, the capacity for mature and measured accountability for one's actions remains at dismal levels. Common sense is still at a premium.💲😆💲
Brilliant documentary! The Regency period is my favorite, no doubt due to my love for Jane Austen, so I'm always extra excited for new content covering this era. :)
Yeah, Lady Emma Hamilton did really well for herself until she ended up not only completely broke but deeply, DEEPLY in debt, and dead at the age of only 49 in Calais, France, an alcoholic laudanum addict.
Upper classes of that era, or any era really including today had a reputation for being neglectful parents. It's like they were so busy with their glamourous social lives they hardly had time for their kids. But there must have been at least some exceptions too, I guess.
That's a bit unfair. It's just that their children oftentimes were just a duty. Also keep in mind that good behavior often meant not showing emotions or doctor's advice was to not show so much love to your children, since it would prevent them growing up - or things on that line. Like not breastfeeding them yourself, that's what wet nurses are for! There is always a huge cultureal baggage, especially when it comes to raising children.
No mention of syphilis, or other STDs, and the lack of any effective prevention or treatments? Isn't that likely the cause of Mad King George's madness?
This reminds me of how terrified 'men in charge' have always been regarding the power of female sexuality. The need to keep women 'in check' still exists for some grous today (especially religious leaders)
Hulu’s Harlots was fantastic. Bridgerton can’t hold a candle to that masterpiece. Harlots was 10x better than Bridgerton could ever hope to be. Both shows show Georgian life from different perspectives; Bridgerton from the eyes of the Georgian elite, and Harlots from the POV of Georgian prostitutes, but in terms of writing, Harlots was better.
I didn't know the two lesbian ladies received pension from the crown. I am shocked. I knew they were respectable, and receive famous guests like Lord Castlereagh-home secretary. I suspect they were viewed as something close to a show of curiosity and wonder. Not a circus, but something close to.
I don't know who did the costumes for this documentary, but accuracy doesn't seem to be what they were going for. No gloves on the men at the ball? Gaudy, bright colors on the women, and ill fitting jackets and vests on the men...aye aye aye.
I'm not really sure how it was an "elegant time" when girls were foisted off to the highest bidder or the best match by their parents with no say on their part. That's not particularly "elegant."
I think this documentary is talking about for the "well-to-do" it was a time of elegance ( so long as you put up a good front & had plenty of money with a lot of connections). You could be seen as "respectable". It's hypocritical and nauseating, however in those times if you had wealth, status, and were very good at hiding your sexual affairs then you were considered part of the elite. It's a complete load of garbage really, but that's how it was.
@@ginmar8134I get you're probably just generalizing to make a point, but that's just not true. At least in upper class society it was very uncommon to marry for love. Many people had affairs because they truly loved the people they were sleeping with.
That English guy at 36 minutes: ‘a sort of wankers club…they tried it in England. It didn’t go down very well’ seemed like a slap on Scotland. I guess it’s ok as it’s white on white racism. Not a good look.
if so much rides on the financial match...do the sons have much say themselves? or are they bossed around by their fathers too? in this story it looks like mr banfield is the one deciding if he likes her or not (i guess it depends on if is the son is the one who inherits everything anyway or not?) [hey....if the rich dad wants a titled heir to pass his wealth onto...what about his eldest son? the poor guy would probably not be happy to be passed over for his younger sister's kid? he might have regretted doing such a good job of protecting his little sister's virtue 🙂]
10:15 George the 3rd "bouts of madness" was caused by untreated syphilis, so you all know. That wig he wore was to cover his baldness, caused by syphilis.
The information is good, but why are the actors' costumes so bad?! 😭 A parade of ill-fitting polyester. I know Bridgerton hates bonnets and proper outerwear and underwear, but is it too much to ask that a historical documentary do better?
😊 Jesus is my Savior not religion. No other religion in the world none of them promises and guarantees a resurrection assure and certain as the holy Spirit and dwelling.

"You don't get married for love, you idiot" made me laugh more than it should have
In many ways nothings changed 😅
Same! XD so bluntly stated
"But your ankle"
"... it.. feels better now"
Straight bodied lol
Miss Corbit charging extra for every inch short - what a Power Move! hahaha
I imagine that the spread of VD must have been rampant among the aristocracy.

@@emilien.Well, the male rate of birth control useage among men and boys these days is pretty dismal.
Lol yeah, it probably was weird if it didn't burn when you peed.
And incest
Excellent doc! Would love to see a deep dive on what the service girls had to go through after they were dismissed for being "enceinte".
They became prostitutes or if they were lucky became courtesans and died of venereal disease in their thirties if they lasted that long.

For me as a German there is something just inherently funning hearing British accents talking about sex. Can't explain why.
Same. They sound too proper lol

I enjoyed this Documentary. Thank you for the upload
absolutely love this channel.
One of the best documentary channels
I love when i recognize an expert from their outside work
Fascinating history and I think it’s great to appreciate it for what it was.
Brilliant documentary; this channel is a treasure trove!
I've never heard of "Fanny Hill" 😯
Thanks for this episode 🤭 enlightening and entertaining.
@19:10 😂 Miss Corbett is a genius businesswoman
Best part is that it’s in the public domain! You can read it on your device for free (I have it on mine lol)
My grandmother used to say, "The second baby always takes 9 months but the first baby can come anytime." 🤭
Thank you..

He wasn't known for being promiscuous.
King George III is speculated to have had a form of bipolar disorder
The video describes men coming home from the grand tour with STDs.
He had porphyria

Yees! I loved Harlots. Very interesting perspective that many dont think about. Harlots is by far way better than Bridgerton!
@@tagaukimasumi7818 I enjoyed both shows, but Harlots was just better written.

My favirite British tv show is The Duchess of Duke street.
from the 1970s? I always see it in AmazonPrime but never watched. Thnx 👍
They talk about Queen Charlotte and show a drawing of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert....

And one outfit for every single occasion, along with obviously highlighted and colored hair.
