My Experience Taking the IBD Diploma in Distilling: Module 2

- Last year I took the Module 1 IBD Distilling Diploma exam. This year, I took the Module 2 Distilling exam. I need to pass three modules, or three exams, in order to obtain my Diploma in Distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).
What is the IBD? The IBD is an organisation that awards qualifications in malting, brewing, cider-making, distilling, and packaging to people working in the drinks industry. In this video, I'll go over all the distilling qualifications you can earn with the IBD, and break down all the different units in Module 2 (distillation theory, batch distillation, continuous distillation, non-matured spirits, maturation, pre-package, and quality). I will also go over how I studied for the exam, and what my results were. So let's go!

Sorry Brewbird but I think You're better than your exams! You've already worked for/with many distilleries and you've done the work already!! You have even taught people (me) and the exam doesn't reflect that!!

That looks really hard. Best of luck. You say you want a job in England but there are hardly any distilleries there. Scotland is where the Scotch whisky industry is with one hundred working distilleries.

Thanks for doing these videos, they're really helpful. I am sitting Module 1 next month, I have been studying incessantly but I'll admit I am quite nervous about drawing a blank on the day. Anything I should focus on, bearing in mind its all online now?
Good luck. Memorize the math equations, they will definitely be in the short answer section. Also, allot your time accordingly based on the number of points in each section. Don't waste too much time on the short answer section, as the essays are where the bulk of the marks are. I like to spend 10min or so scribbling down an outline + notes for the essay before I begin writing it. I'd recommend taking the time to jot down an outline, since it will be easier for the grader to review.

Hi, Need your help. I registered for brewing diploma in the March this year 2023. I didn't know the depth of the syllabus. Now it's very hard grasp/ cover the full syllabus of all three modules. And the time very less. Can u suggest me a strategy for how to tackle these all three exams together. I don't have the last year exams questions.
Hi Amit, wow you signed up for all 3 modules together? That is very tough. I have a diploma in brewing, but not from the IBD. I would find other people who took it and ask for help. Also make a study plan, planning out all your time until the exam dates. Carefully go through the material and make a list of all the topics you are not confident about, so you can focus in on them as the exam gets closer. Great video yet again!! Do you think a home distiller would have a chance at passing these exams based on limited experience? The math should not be an issue for me based on my day job but I do lack the practical experience of working in a distillery.
“Limited experience” that’s the answer to your question man. Come on.
I think you could take it. They provide you with the study materials when you sign up, so you just need to study those materials well. It isn't so different from studying for a high school or university exam.

When you pay the fee for the module that gives you access to their learning platform which has all the study materials for the exam.
I see on the IBD website that they offer "recommended support" at £1387 per module, tutor guided learning program. Did you get this and would you say it's highly recommended? It certainly adds a huge extra cost to the Diploma! Thanks in advance!
