    It's honestly not surprising that Rick understood this Volume the most since he was the only one to rewatch the show, the others didn't even remember that before falling into the void their original destination was Vacuo. However, the music is so good that Aaron immediately recognised the Red Like Roses leitmotif from 12 years ago. Did some research and apparently RWBY holds the record in terms of leitmotif mastery.

      seriously, massive kudos to casey, jeff, and of course alex abraham (who wrote the genuinely impressive score for most of the show) and the other artists (who iirc worked on the first two and latest two volumes) for the absolute masterwork that is the full rwby discography. sooo much heartfelt and high-quality music

    I knew Rick would like Ruby's character arc, it's brilliant. Ruby felt that she wasn't good enough, and the bar in her mind was how perfect Summer was. So shattering that illusion plus remembering that her mother loved her the way she was, was enough. Knowing that her mother wasn't the perfect teammate, huntress, mother or human, Ruby can move on and trust herself.

    This volume was more important then people I think realize Marie told ruby that using the sliver eyes was easiest when u make a state of mind to tap into but if u watch from season 3-7 she gets no help and never deals with her issues she just keeps forging on to keep everyone going in season 7 she gets better do to penny appearance but in season 8 Yang words and the group fracturing plus the idea that her mom was turn into a grim really hurts ruby and the final break is penny death plus there failure to save the relics ruby has not had significant character development since like season one maybe two unlike almost every other main character jaune,Weiss,Yang and Blake who have had several seasons of dealing with there issues and that what this volume was to be restoring the girl who just wanted to save people restoring her heart and I think she will be able to use her sliver eyes much better and in talking with the tree maybe figure out how to get Salem to understand the value of life and death apparently according to brother the only was she can be free of her curse so I think this volume is more important then people realize especially since it looks like there at vacuo and do to there message people/forces from all other kingdoms are there to fight against Salem I don’t know I enjoyed and really believe this is the final piece to set them up to help them be ready for the final fight

    24:48 Eric, I definitely think a rewatch would help. I enjoyed the volume on first watch, but rewatching it helped with truly understanding everything happening by knowing what's gonna happen.
    Honestly, a rewatch of V7-8 would probably help even more, since some of the foundational issues addressed in V9 come mainly from those volumes (e.g. Jaune still feeling guilt over killing Penny, even though it was Penny who requested it and it was the best way to avoid the maiden power going to Cinder).

    Their plan going sideways adds another reason why Raven is so scared of Salem, maybe she saw what happened to Summer. This scene solidified what Salem's line in V7 implied: "Your mother said those words to me." It's been theorized for a while that Raven's anger towards Ruby is actually self-hatred since she was part of the mission that led to Summer never returning,

    • @inspectorwhoreacts
      @inspectorwhoreacts Před měsícem +7

      Raven in Volume 5 also mentioned "I've seen people come back from the dead."
      I think it's a big hint they killed Salem but she of course couldn't die and caught them off guard, summer fell and raven ran.

      @@Ceepo77 Ozpin has not reincarnated during the time Raven has known him until Oscar. He was the headmaster during Raven's Academy time, twenty years ago, "The Youngest Ever", so it is entirely possible that Ozpin was barely older than the students being taught. It's far more likely Raven saw Salem come back to life, take out Summer, and then Raven fled through a portal to Qrow, as Qrow was revealed to be the one to break the news to Tai of Summer's death at the end of V4 to Tai, so Raven did not tell Tai.

      If you missed the announcement a while back, they are still doing the Volume 9 Beyon thing, which is dropping on March 30, as well as Volume 9 and an extended epilogue sequence. I don't know if it's just what they showed at RTX, or if it's longer than that, or if it's that but completed, but there will still be SOME RWBY content before RT shuts down for good.
      But WB is looking to sell various RT shows, like RWBY, and I'm hoping for either Nickelodeon, or Blur Studio, since they've started to delve more into content creation instead of JUST being a VFX and animation studio. But if not Blur, then Nickelodeon, like I said. They have a great track record with animated shows, and they could also produce longer episodes more frequently than RT could. And it might also become a Paramount+ original and air on Nick Kids, as well, to widen the audience.
      But it's better to wait and see than to hope and speculate about something that will never happen, in my opinion.

    This is easily my favorite Volume of the show. We finally get payoff for a couple things that have been built up over years. The music was peak, definitely my favorite soundtrack, Casey and Martin were incredible. The world design was really cool. We got some interesting answers but also some more interesting questions like about Summer Rose. The only thing that really sucked imo is it felt hard to hear what characters were saying a lot and Crunchyroll doesn’t let you use English subtitles for English audio apparently, which made it almost impossible to understand the Jabberwocker. But aside from that this was a 10/10 volume imo and I really hope the show can continue to a proper conclusion. But if not, I’m satisfied with how they left it off here.

  • @mlgnerd13
    @mlgnerd13 Před 2 měsíci +25

    I knew Rick would enjoy this volume the most.
    I think Ruby's whole arc here is a parallel to the show, and a response to Ironwood's view of the world. When the show started, it was about young people wanting to become heroes to protect people from danger. Ruby wanted to do this, and she was confident in her ability to do so. But after the fall of Beacon, the show became about trying to save the world, and honestly, those stakes are just too high. It becomes hard to care about small victories with the apocalypse bearing down on you. That's what Ironwood believed, that saving lives meant nothing if it didn't save the world. At the beginning of the volume, Ruby was still trying to do good things despite the circumstances. But after learning the relics fell into Salem's hands and about Penny's death, Ruby lost hope. She stopped believing that the things she did mattered, that no matter what everything would fall apart and it was her fault. Her journey was about remembering what she knew when the show started: she was meant to protect people in any way that she can, and that small victories do matter, and this theme is represented by a character that is literally named "little".
    I do appreciate the way Eric talks about things he doesn't like, going to great lengths to make it clear that he doesn't think everyone should dislike it, but that it just doesn't work for him right now. I understand wanting more of the story, but the show had become too plot heavy over the last few volumes, and I think taking the characters to a completely different place was a necessary pause in all of that drama

    I think this Volume heavily rewards those who pay close (maybe even too much XD) attention to the series. This Volume ties together and ties up many outstanding issues and overarching stories across the entire series, especially ones that've been playing out in the background. I can definitely see how one might "see the words on the page, but not feel them" if you're watching the show casually, and that's a bummer; as with most of the show's issues, more runtime would've helped that, but c'est la vie.
    It at least satisfied me, because my expectation for this Volume was that it would be Ruby's time to deal with her problems, and that's exactly what it ended up being.

    • @JK_of_Today
      @JK_of_Today Před 2 měsíci +1

      It’s nice that Ruby delt with her issues, but I needed more than that. That doesn’t excuse putting the whole story on pause just to wrap up one thing.
      I also feel like even that wasn’t wrapped up good. Ruby still doesn’t know what happened to her mother. Is she supposed to have another mental breakdown when that finally happens? That would feel like a repeat.

    • @effortlessfury
      @effortlessfury Před 2 měsíci +25

      @@JK_of_Today I think part of the outcome here is that she's going to try not to be measuring herself against her mother anymore, so Summer won't weigh on her like that anymore. Additionally, this pause was planned a long, long time ago. You're free to dislike that approach, but there's nothing inherently invalid about it.

So once he learned his lesson about that, Alyx fixed what she broke (which was keeping him here by poisoning him and not allowing him to follow her to the tree and find the exit) by leaving some of herself behind in her knife which allowed Jaune to get back his youth which he lost. But Jaune still has all of his memories it seems so he still has the life experience and fighting practice of his years in the Ever After but now is back in his youthful body... This is especially the case when we’re told that they’ll show up wherever, and it might not seem like much time has passed. My biggest gripe with this season is the decision to leave Somewhat and Juniper in the Ever After. The whole thing with Neo not being able to return to Remnant is about attachments, and literally the only attachments that Somewhat and Juniper have in this season are our cast who are going to Remnant, so why would they not return to Remnant with them? It also comes into the question of what actually changes this season. All of our characters with the exception of Neo ascending and Jaun's hair having a white streak are back to how they were before falling, so this season has no physical trace in the story moving forward. Showing back up on Remnant is certainly impactful, but imagine the magnitude of showing back up with a giant talking mouse and a jackalope big enough to RIDE on. That would be AWESOME, but they didn't go for it.

      I don't think Afterans CAN leave the Ever After aside from the Brothers themselves, even if they want to or have bonds. Hence the Cats whole bodyjacking plan, the Cat required the body of someone FROM Remnant to enter Remnant, they knew where the door between realms was the entire time so that was never the issue for their escape.

    • @grantharriman284
      @grantharriman284 Před měsícem

      @@thewalrus45 I get that and it very much looks like those are the current rules, but the writers of this show MADE those rules that way this season. The rules were completely new and unwritten until just now, so they could very easily have made the call to send those 2 to Remnant and it would have been AWESOME to see that happen. The cat has no "attachment" to Remnant, he is just bored and looking for something new to do. Remnant just happens to offer that something. In my version Somewhat and Juniper would not be able to pass through except to join/remain with Jaun and Team RWBY who they have strongly bonded with.

    Im more on the side of not loving the season. It just felt out of place if you think about that we kinda in in the middel of a war. I think the ever after would have been a good calm 3 episode arc that somehow leads to the action in S08 final. But as it was it kinda killed the momentum of the overal story a little bit for me.

    • @morlock2012
      @morlock2012 Před měsícem

      Meh, I think it's alright in terms of story momentum. The girls have just had a massive defeat, this is regrouping before the last stand. It makes sense, to find a reason to keep fighting.
      I don't think the tone was quite right, trying to do the usual RWBY cartoony humour that we've always enjoyed. Not impossible to do, I think they juggled it better in V4.
      I'm just rather disappointed with how they drew Ruby's character arc. It's the right question (what is good enough when the events you're faced with are simply overwhelming), and a good answer (be the best person you think you can be, do whatever acts of good you can manage, however small, even if it doesn't make you the 'hero' who saves everything). Even the blacksmith confirms it ("maybe that girl will be good enough") but then when the cat points out her imperfections, her uncertainty, WBY claim she was never like that. That doesn't make any sense to me.
      She was broken. Uncertain. Even WBY briefly point out they probably didn't help her with that enough, before getting wrapped up in Jaune again. She wasn't sure whether 'being a huntress' was enough, when it didn't save Atlas. The others had already decided that it would have to do, that they couldn't be anything else, in the scene at the Herbalist. This should have been Ruby's moment to accept that she might not be enough to win the way, but that she can't accept running from a fight, or being anything other that a huntress. That she can only be herself, that smaller soul. And I think they fumbled that.

    Initially I was feeling Eric unfortunately just wasn't attuned to the volume (it happens, sometimes things that could match up don't and that's all there is to it), but listening to him... I find some things I agree to. Despite having a smaller cast than usual this season, the characters we do have don't all really... matter. I don't think they're wasted or poorly portrayed necessarily (or if they are it's not a problem limited to this volume), but what he says about the themes overshadowing the characters is true for Weiss, Blake, and Yang.
    Weiss was a spectator pretty much the whole way through, with a bit of comic relief. Not a terrible thing as she's had more attention in previous volumes and it's important for characters to take a step back here and there but... it does feel weird that this incredible journey is largely a wash for her. Although her speech at the apothecary's was my favorite, and mostly establishes she's a "finished product". As well as the others.
    Blake and Yang had their one thing and it was good. And while I have a million other things to say about it, for the sake of brevity I'll just say it still felt disconnected from the rest of the volume and they, especially Yang, really served no purpose in the Ever After. And when I say purpose I don't mean a driving force I just mean she didn't matter.
    Honestly everyone besides Ruby, Jaune, and Neo could have made it to Vacuo last volume and little would have needed to change. Not nothing, just not as much as I'd like.

    I love RWBY. RWBY is my favorite thing ever, but I gotta be honest, I really didn’t like volume 9 at all. It felt like a filler arc. Yes there were some important and needed things that happened, but they were done poorly.
    I know they had to address the emotional issues like Ruby’s trauma and Blake and Yang’s feelings, but they didn’t have to put the whole story on pause to do that. I don’t like how Ruby resolved her emotional trauma in this world. She still doesn’t even know the whole truth about what happened to her mom, is she supposed to have another mental breakdown when that happens? That would be retreading old ground. Blake and Yang also felt like they were forced together, not that they made their own decision to come together when they were ready.
    This whole volume I was trying so hard to care about this new world but I just didn’t. The Ever After wasn’t compelling at all to me. I was right there with Ruby, I was so annoyed that literally everyone just kept asking “What are you?” It got so old. And everything just felt a bit too over the top. Rwby is supposed to be based on a fairytale. Not literally a fairytale. And I know it wasn’t Rooster Teeth’s fault, but it didn’t help that it was a 2 year wait for volume 8 to volume 9.
    I also HATED how Jaune was just randomly turned back to normal age. Made it feel like this volume had even less of impact, hence feeling like a filler arc.
    They also just spent so much time giving us lore that we didn’t need. Who honestly needed to know where the gods came from? No one was asking for that. It’s one of those things that just isn’t necessary information. Some things are more fun when they’re a mystery. Like Yoda’s species name. Sometimes it’s more fun to not know. Because if you think about it, what did that even accomplish? Ok we know where the gods came from. They came from the tree, cool. But where did the tree come from? Was it made by another god? And where did that god come from? See. Just useless information.
    Also speaking of the gods, they were super out of character here. They said they shouldn’t blame their creations for their mistakes. But that’s literally what they did to remnant. They were upset with Salem so they destroyed the whole world but left her alive to suffer the consequences. They literally caused RWBY. But now they’re saying they shouldn’t blame their creations?
    Also some things weren’t explained. Why did Neo’s powers freak out? They just did. Why does getting eaten by a fake jabberwalker prevent you from acending? They were all brought to the tree because of acceptance but Yang clearly wasn’t ready to accept Ruby’s situation. And it really took Jaune a decade or more to realize this?
    The only scene I really enjoyed this volume was getting to see and hear Summer for the first time and see Raven come back. But that alone didn’t make up for the volume. Felt like it was teasing me with a story I actually wanted to see before bringing me back to one I didn’t care about.
    I’m not saying these things to be a hater. I’m saying them because I love RWBY and I have to be honest, I didn’t enjoy this volume at all. But I still love RWBY and I hope it finds a way to continue despite Rooster Teeth’s closure.

      I wouldn't consider it filler, and even appreciate what it set out to do with Ruby. But I did feel they rushed to the finish line.
      Granted budget plays a part, but I'd have liked to see things like her remembering the Huntsmen she's met and their resolves (Oobleck, Maria, Qrow, Robyn (especially if Robyn was slightly better expressed for a Ruby parallel))

      @@Lucifer_Crowe Well with how things are, it would make sense. Considering what happened to RT, maybe they knew and wanted to end it there or maybe it would've been cancelled halfway. We still not sure what's gonna happen to RWBY, heard it was going to get sold, maybe someone passionate will continue it.

      Did you pay attention? Alyx's dagger turned back Jaune because before she was killed she had a crisis of conscience and wanted to fix everything she broke in the Ever After, including poor Jaune. It was good foreshadowing, the opposite of random. They were all brought to the tree because of acceptance. Then Yang saw the state Ruby was in and changed her mind, is that so hard to understand? You didn't understand anything.

      @@killarahighschoolofficial4390 just because he interpret things diffrent from you doent mean he dont understand. Especally the Jaune thing with the dagger was random. Just because there was some Alyx crisis of conscience magic in that dagger it diddnt need to particially turn jaune back. I would have really liked Jaune stays old, then we had at least some real progressen diffrence to V8 expect some emotional change . But how it is, we are beack were we startet, kind of. Filler? Like hell it is, the Tree is the solution to the problem of Salem, this volume is VYTAL. "It is a terrible thing, to have a broken heart, and there was no one to return them to the Tree for repair." Salem has a broken heart and needs to be returned to the Tree. But as long as Remnant turns, she must walk its face, so only the Brothers can take her there. So the relics must be brought together.

    I agree with Eric. This Volume felt like it could have been a few episodes, not a whole Volume. I always felt like I could boil this Volume down to one sentence and you could skip the rest. I never understood why so many hype this up to be the best Volume when I think it's one of the worst.

    The last few volumes have been pretty bad. But this volume felt good. And I think it's because they focused on the characters yeah. But also because this volume is detached from the rest of them in a way. I felt fully distracted from the bad writing of the main plot line and was able to enjoy this volume on its own.
    And now they return presumably just before the fall of Atlas happened. But we'll see. Actually we won't. Rooster Teeth ded now.
