I taught a crochet club for 4th and 5th graders. Parents loved how it raised their self esteem. I would have loved to teach them to machine sew. I think they need to bring home economics or fiber arts back to high school curriculum.

Always enjoy the triple play. I worked in a K-12 school library for 29 years and had read The Quiltmaker's Gift to a 4th grade class. They wanted to make a quilt for a hospitalized classmate. I cut the 3 inch squares of various fabrics and colors. They each chose 9 for a 9 patch block. I have a collection of old black head Singers, a handcrank, featherweight, 99s, 15s, variety of others. I set the machines (6) up on the library tables on the elementary side. The class came before their lunchtime. On the whole most did ok sewing. But, the guys in the class came back after a quick lunch and "unsewed" some of theirs to resew. They were more picky than the gals. A most rewarding time in the library.

Just a few minutes in and already I want to thank you for talking about mental health for young people because it’s reached crisis level in our country as the pandemic slowly winds down. Public schools in our area do offer something similar to what used to be called home ec-it’s now called family and consumer science. And they do offer a clothing design course, but I don’t think it extends to quilting. (I teach English so it’s not my area so I could be wrong) I have always wanted to explore the potential interest in offering quilting as a club at the high school level, but was always too exhausted by my regular duties. I’ll be retiring after this year so maybe I’ll be a volunteer. 😄

Good evening lovely ladies, WOW Natalie, you look so pretty with your new haircut and freshen up colour, it so brightens up your bonny face, making your eyes sparkle, Jenny you have two bonny girls standing beside you.
I loved how ordered Misty's quilt was in colour and layout, although Jenny's star style was lovely, if a bit busy for my eyes and brain. Nat, i loved your reasoning behind your bright, cheerful yellow quilt having been brought up doing crafts literally almost before i could walk. My lovely Mum, was a crafter by necessity because she didn't keep well to be able to work when we were small, and not have very much of a wage coming in even with my Daddy working all hours he could. With her brilliant hands and brain taught me to never be afraid to try and so i am a multi crafter and enjoy so many crafts and now because of you and another talented lady on CZcams, i am trying my hand at making a quilt. Learning sewing is a life skill that we all need to help bring our planet back to thrive instead of being just one big dustbin of rubbish. Teaching children crafts breaks out their imagination that they never knew that they had and sets their little minds growing and being able to conquer many things because they learned how to use their imagination to start with. My brother's friend, who used to make life impossible for me when we were at school, now wants me to teach her some of the things that come to me naturally, but she had never attempted. She is now learning how to sew buttons on cardigans, shirts, trousers, etc, things she would just throw them away and buy new. It's funny how i new feel useful after so many years of being the odd ball amongst everyone that was "normal". Thank you ladies for sharing both your love of sewing and for bringing twists on patterns that have come through the ages. Jenny i would be like you in having a rummage through the thrift shops, it's amazing what you can pick up, although some times i can't understand why someone would throw these things away. Have a wonderful evening girls and see you again soon on our screens, crafty hugs from Norah, Glenochil Village, Scotland

All my family members have at least one pet in the house, not to mention my two adorable grandchildren! So no one wants a quilt with a pale background. I have to plan quilts that will not be spoiled by a little smear of dirt, because I want my quilts to be used now, not after I am dead. So a good multi-color, with darks and brights predominating has become my grandma style of quilting.

I made a Jacob’sLadder as one of my first large quilts. I made it in calm colors as I was giving it to a person who had just had surgery. I bought the fabric on line, and didn’t realize I bought a half yard bundle. I had over 15 yards of this fabric, and made multiple quilts with it. After 5 years, I have just a few small pieces left. Thanks for such great versions of this very versatile block. They were all beautiful.

Jenny, I am also left-handed and I too get messed up putting them together. I am a beginner quilter (because of covid), so I am ripping seams all the time. I am very fortunate to have had two grandmothers-in-law, that took their time to show me how to quilt and that was many years ago. When I was not able to work because of Covid, I decided to start quilting. I am very artistic and make my own jewelry and figurines, so this is another chapter in my life and I love it. I am making the disappearing hour glass quilt out of the Buzzworthty fabric.
