We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

Have you thought about running some screws part way into the columns writhing the gabions? It might help lock the columns into the gabions more solidly because the wood couldn’t pull up out of the rocks in an extreme wind storm.

Hi Jim and Jess, great job on the rock bails, they'll reinforce the structure quite a bit but you should still consider some 45 degree bracing at the top of the tall posts. You put 45 degree braces on your other structure that supports your rain collection system for a reason, that same reason exists for your solar panels support structure. Just like the roof of the larger structure can become a "sail" in the wind so can those solar panels. Even if the bracing weren't structurally necessary it should at least visually match, after all that was one of your reasons for the rock bails, which was a very good idea by the way.
    Until next time

love the additional gabions, but those solar panels need some serious mopping and rinsing to manage the dust which has accumulated. Your solar array is like a sail. If strong winds hit it from behind, there could be damage. You might have been smart to leave a space between panels to allow the wind to vent itself. The structure is strong, but you will have super storms before your life in the desert is done. Love your programs, you are a great couple.
