This was ABBA's departure from the happy, uptempo songs of the 70's. The Visitors shows a more complex, more serious progession they were starting to take.
You never know what you're going to hear when you listen to an ABBA song that's what makes them so unique and different. like no other the group that I know of they stand above and beyond them and to think they came back 40 years later and did it all again bravo Abba forever!!!😊😮

Love this one and glad you looked it up. Sadly there is no actual video. This is when the group broke up and they never finished the videos for all the singles from the album. So sad because it was a very exciting album that showed progressive vision and that they were absolutely ready musically to head into the new decade. This album The Visitors was also the first commercially available optical compact disc.

Title track from my favourite ABBA album. Dark song about Soviet dissidents being hunted down by Brezhnev's or Andropov's minions (dates from 1981, well before the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russia's short flirtation with democracy). ABBA were headed in a different direction in their final two or three years (pre-reunion).
As to no one sounding quite like ABBA, true, but their influence is huge. You can hear ABBA in everything from Ace of Base or Savage Garden to Stefani Germanotta (Lady Gaga) or even Miley Cyrus' recent "Flowers"...
This is a Frida lead. Apparently she worked for several weeks to make her voice match the message of the song. Frida is the most versatile singer of the two women. You still haven't done "Like an Angel Passing through my Room", the only song with one woman singing, and there are so many more Frida leads you haven't gotten to yet. You might get the best feel for her total range by listening to her in pre and post ABBA years. You can't get more different than "Star Over Bethlehem" (pre ABBA) and "Fire and Ice" (Post ABBA). Agnetha is a great, world class singer, but she doesn't quite have the range in styles that Frida has. Chase you still haven't made a dent in their catalog. Amazing isn't it?

There is no official music video for this song. The one you’re watching is a mix of Under Attack, Summer Night City, Eagle and Take A Chance On Me. In other words, this is fake. Probably made by a fan.

That is why I think that the title of the song and the album is not accidental, since in addition to being about the dissidents in the former USSR, I think that they speak of themselves as "visitors" of what "was" ABBA originally (in as for them as couples) Even the cover is very graphic: the Four separated and isolated (image that will be deepened in the official video of the future single "The day before you came" in 1982)
the song itself is very good in its genre, it has a futuristic air (it could go as a soundtrack in a "Star Wars" movie) Frida does a great job in lead voice, the chorus is good but different from ABBA's more traditional, the use of synthesizers by Benny is majestic, and Björn's lyrics are strong
I really like the song itself (8pts), but on the album "The Visitors" I prefer other tracks, the one I like most is the moving "Slipping through my fingers", which was performed live on the TV special 'Dick Cavett meets ABBA'

Great reaction Chase. The Visitors is their "darkest" song with a totally different sound. This was the title track from their 1981 album. Frida's vocals and Benny's synths are hauntingly beautiful.
You are correct, there was no official video for this song, but the foursome looked great anyway so I enjoyed it. This was released as a single and the B-side was even better, "When All Is Said and Done".

Living and following ABBA in real-time was a unique experience, just like Chaise hearing and experiencing the complexity and diversity of their singles and albums,at that time it was surreal and mesmerising ,no other artist or their music could come even close to matching the quality and astounding production of both the music and the videos they released.They were a PHENOMENON and Australia embraced them and adored them,they have a very special connection with us,and now I am 63 yo and their music and videos still make me emotional and ecstatic like I was in 1974 as a 14yo boy,they are the soundtrack of my life.

This is a masterpiece, and ABBA on the verge of a completely new sound, shortly before finishing making music together: Futuristic, experimental and gloomy. Frida's leadvocals are wonderfully eery, completly nailing the ambience of the lyrics: The paranoia of living in a totalitarian state. I loved your reaction, and I love your openness and embracement of ABBA's different styles and genres, but the fan video actually was a bit distracting: All these happy clips of Agnetha and Frida, while Frida was singing about paranoia and breakdown.
Album is great try listening to When All Is Said And Done. Supposedly was about Benny and Frida divorce.

And after a couple of public statement, from stage/ TV, ABBA was banned in Russia.

this song describes a group of political dissidents meeting in a room together, when the secret police arrive, and the dissidents are terrified of what will happen to them.
btw, frida's voice was not electronically enhanced, though it may sound like it.
she practiced for weeks to get it to sound that way for this song.
Abba got experimental with their last album. Benny & Bjorn went on to write the musical Chess and you can hear the same style in that, would be a great next reaction

I must have been about... I dunno, 8 or 9 when I first heard this. My mother has almost all of ABBA's albums on vinyl (and I believe one on cassette) and I had already gone through the likes of the Best Of, Voulez-Vous, and Super Trouper. BUT: Then I found this one and put it on. And boy, lemme tell ya, I was instantly hooked on The Visitors. In fact, the whole A side is truly awesome. I think fans at the time thought that this album was a bit too far from the regular ABBA sound but tbqh I think it's my favourite album of theirs. So what drew me and has kept me hooked on this song? Well, as a young boy I don't think I had the word for it but now as an adult it is definitely the build-up in the first and second verse. And then when the climax finally hits, it's all worth it. But what really cements it for me is that short instrumental interlude after the choruses. Benny Andersson is k1ll1ng it on the keyboard. I think it's especially those quick three notes in the 4th bar. By the speed of it they sound like 16th notes. So that little detail is one of the things that have kept me hooked. Great reaction!
All the official videos are featured on ABBAs official CZcams channel. Sadly, there was no official video for The Visitors. I prefer it when you just listen to the audio only of the ABBA songs that do not have an official video or official lyric video. Ive been an ABBA fan for almost 50 years and it was mostly an audio experience for us back in the 1970s because there was no way to see their videos unless you saw them on tv which was a rare happening especially here in the US. We had no internet back then and video player machines (VHS tapes) didn’t really come into wide use until the 1980s. I love your channel and love your ABBA song reactions. ❤ Thank you!

Hi! It's not a movie for the song. That movie is from Summernight City. This song is dark. It's from the 80s when the cold war was around us. She is singing about a russian dissident, wating to be taken.
ABBA really should have made an official video for this. And it would have been super interesting, given the theme of the song. 'The Visitors' features in the brilliant 'Voyage' shows currently in London and it is truly jaw dropping when it starts.

This was the first song of their last LP. As a big ABBA fan I bought it when it came out, and the sound was so different from what we were used to, I started crying. It took me some time to start liking it. The rest the LP was less futuristic and has some great songs. My favourite was ‘one of us’

Musically unexpected masterpiece like Eagle. The Visitors is now the opening song of the ABBAtar concerts in London, unfortunately no official video. As someone wrote, it's about the Cold War and the rearmament (unfortunately current again). There are two more thematic songs on the album: Soldiers and the finale song Like An Angel... . I'm not a fan of the whole album myself because "the composer made things a bit easy for himself on some of the other songs".

Incredible track. It’s a dark song about the KGB arresting Russian dissidents so the video doesn’t really fit I’m afraid.
This fan-made video didn't do justice to the song. The audio quality was poor, and the video was distracting. I'm not saying this to be mean; I know you're not familiar with it as we, Abba fans. I suggest avoiding these kinds of videos. If there's no official video or (at least) official lyrics video, always use the audio track unless there are specific recommendations in the comments.

One of their finest songs which went relatively unnoticed when it first came out in 1981. Synth heaven with the chorus and the lyrics were quite a development to what had gone before. Frida’s vocal delivery was superb!!!
