Introduction to Psychodynamic Theory and Therapy (for beginners)

  • Psychodynamic theory and therapy is the oldest of the four most prominent and scientifically recognised approaches to psychotherapy. It is based on the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory contributed to by Sigmund Freud, Carl Gustav Jung, Alfred Adler, Erik Erikson, Melanie Klein, Anna Freud and too many more to name them all here. Psychodynamic theory does not only provide the basis for psychodynamic therapy to treat mental illness but also aims to capture the development, structure and function of the human psyche. Therefore, it can be useful to anyone who wants to understand themselves better, live a more meaningful life - or just be fascinated by some of the most elaborated (and controversial) theories psychology has to offer.

    4. The past.
    5. The focus on interpersonal relationship.
    6. Exploring wishes, dreams and fantasies.

    I found it so easy to watch and listen to your explanation. You have helped me tremendously. I am following this form of therapy currently, I follow it in Dutch and even though I understand pretty much everything, to listen to your explanation in English gave me a number of "Ooooh NOW I get it" moments!! It was a really interesting video.
    This method of therapy is amazing and I wish I'd found it years ago... But it's not just the therapy, it's the therapist too. She was worth the wait!

    I recently graduated in Psychology and Counselling and currently looking to take PostGrad studies on the path to becoming a Counsellor. I think this is the approach I will take, more for how you explain emotions and the developmental perspective as opposed to thoughts. I can see merit in all approaches to therapy but I feel this is where I will start my journey as it tends to resonate within me. Thank you.

      I'm so glad to hear this video got you intrigued about psychodynamic therapy! In general, the therapeutic relationship you develop with your therapist (how comfortable you feel with them) is more important than the precise approach they use. However, I personally found that I resonate with the psychodynamic approach more than any other. I always encourage everyone to try out multiple therapist in the beginning until you find someone you feel comfortable with. Don't be shy to set up "getting to know each other"-sessions with multiple therapists. For meaningful psychotherapy, there needs to be a solid connection. I wish you all the best!

It's clear that you have a real passion for this field. I'm curious who else you appreciate in the contemporary world of psychodynamic theory. Do you have a staunch respect for McWilliams, too? • @PsychodynamicPsychology
      @PsychodynamicPsychology  Před 2 lety +3

      I'm not qualified, yet, to either diagnose or treat mental illness, so this is not qualified mental health advice and you should trust your psychiatrist more than me. That being said, all mental illness can be understood based on a bio-psycho-social model. However, some illnesses have a stronger emphasis on heritable/biological factors than others. And bipolar disorder is one of them. The reason that your psychiatrist doesn’t apply psychodynamic psychotherapy is because for this disorder it’s not the treatment of choice! Particularly not in an acute manic state. From what I have learned about the treatment of bipolar disorder so far, the first-choice treatment is a medical intervention with mood stabilisers (which your psychiatrist apparently has administered) plus sometimes cognitive-behavioural therapy or interpersonal psychotherapy (which I would describe as a mixture between the psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural approach). Psychotherapy is intended in this case to learn to navigate everyday and interpersonal stressors that could trigger another episode or to deal with the effects of previous episodes. If you don’t feel that you can trust your current psychiatrist, you can always get a second opinion from another mental health professional. I wish you the best!

    • @PsychodynamicPsychology
      @PsychodynamicPsychology  Před rokem +1

      The difference depends on who you ask. For me, psychoanalytic refers to Freud's theories or theories that adhere closely to the Freudian lineage. Psychodynamic is the entire approach that puts emphasis on the unconscious, emotions, inner conflicts, transference/countertransference, etc. from Freud to modern day psychodynamic thinking.
