Jimmy Fallon was actually playing a real soldier as well, Lt. Geroge Rice, he ended up making multiple runs of ammo and supplies to the men and did so right up until the Germans encircled them, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions.

But, unlike Rice, Jimmy actually had to get people to push the Jeep he was "driving" from behind, because he didn't know how to drive a stick! They managed to block the scene in a way where it looks like he's doing the actual driving.

When Guarnere comes back limping, he just spent some time in a hospital. Not depicted in the show, but he was leading a squad in combat, the line stretched for nearly a mile, so he stole a motorcycle from a nearby farm to move faster up and down the line, leading and encouraging the men. He was shot at by a sniper and hit in the leg.
In the hospital, he tried sneaking out by putting black boot polish on his cast but was caught. Ultimately allowed to leave when he told the docs he'd just keep trying slipping away. His behavior earned him a bust back to private but the paperwork never made it back so he rejoined easy with his rank of sergeant.
Thats why Winters tells him "no more joyriding" referencing the motorbike.

Dick Winters said that if he could only pick one man to go into combat with it would have been Sgt. Floyd "Tab" Talbert. Tab survived the war, but became a recluse almost until his death. Just another form of casualty inflicted by war.

When the Germans attacked, the US forces had no real reserve- Eisenhower's tactic was to keep almost all his units on the front, to keep pressure on the Germans. He did not have what is normally called a "strategic reserve" of several divisions he could throw into the battle at need. So when the germans attacked, he had to grab units that were in the middle of rest and re-equipment, like the 101st, and throw them into the line to plug the gaps. This series does not mention it, but Easy company had only been pulled off the line in Holland about 6 weeks before and most of their support weapons- bazooka, mortars, etc- had been turned in to the armorer units for repair and maintenance. They did not get these back in time, just as they never recieved the winter clothing they were supposed to have been issued while in camp.

I read somewhere, I wish I could remember where, that Moose was interviewed years later. He admitted that, on the night he got shot, he couldn't remember the password to answer the sentry's challenge...and still couldn't all those years later.

The Battle of the Bulge...the largest land battle ever engaged in by the US Army in history (obviously other nations participated, too). It was Germany's last large-scale desperate attempt to turn the tide of the war. Caught EVERYONE by surprise and everyone was called up to stop the advance.
Also, regarding the lip-grabbing by Sgt. Talbert (played by Matthew Leitch) at the crossroads, that was based on an actual habit that Talbert had as described by his friends and family when Leitch was researching for his part in the series. Since Talbert had already passed away Leitch talked to his family to find out more about him (as many of the actors did in researching their parts) and he made sure he put that habit into the scene as a tribute to Floyd Talbert. A wonderful way to remember the man.

6:34 Matthew Leitch, the actor who plays Floyd Talbert talks about this in an interview. Many of the actors did not get to meet the real life soldiers they portrayed and therefore spoke to others who served with them to get information about them. Apparently Floyd Talbert was known to do this often and it's just a very subtle detail that shows how in depth these actors went in order to accurately portray them.

You are the first reactors I've seen that actually understood that when the smoke grenade failed to go off, that meant that Winters was left by himself to face the Germans as the rest of the company waited for the signal to follow. He was extremely lucky.
When the Germans launched their surprise offensive at the end, they attacked a thinly-held area in the Ardennes Forest held by the 1st Army that was being used as a rest area for fatigued and combat-inexperienced troops. Many were killed or captured, and many units were rendered combat ineffective. These units were already weakened, and combined with the shock of being overrun and barely escaping with their lives, those troops were basically out of the fight at that point and would have done more harm than good, and that's why they were sent to the rear to rest and reorganize.
The German attack was called the Ardennes Offensive or the Battle of the Bulge, because of the huge breach it created in the Allied lines. The Allies were stretched out along a broad front and their supply lines were stretched thin due to the rapid advance thru France. The German plan was to take the port of Antwerp and cut off Allied supplies. They put everything they had available into this offensive in a last ditch effort to turn the tide on the western front.
Don't want to give any spoilers, but I will say that what happens in this next battle made the 101st famous and put them in the history books. It's my favorite episode and is really well done.

I love the way this episode plays with the perception of time. The time Winters and the SS soldier look at each other varies wildly from the opening scene, to the “actual” event we see while he’s typing it up, where it’s a very brief moment, to the flashbacks on the train, where it goes on and on, and then the single shot is replayed over and over again.

The Thunder / Flash password combination was D-Day specific. Challenge and responses should have been set on location, but troops did get complacent. It's likely, though, that Moose was supposed to say something specific besides just his name. Combine that with the jumpiness of sentries on the front line, and that kinda thing happened a lit more than it should have.

In the scene where they depict Winters shooting the German soldier, he actually threw a grenade at him first (this was their standard operating procedure during an assault). The grenade failed to go off because they (Easy company) would put tape over the spoon as an extra safety measure. The German threw a grenade back at Winters which ALSO failed to detonate. The German smiled at the abserdity of the situation and that's when Winters shot him.

At 6:45 good job sister in noticing that Winters was sizing up his guys to see if he could figure out where their heads were at!! He knew what had to be done and he was checking to see if his men looked a little nervous or perhaps scared or if they look like they were gun-ho!!!
If he had looked over and saw that they were all gun-ho he would have just given the order for everyone to charge at once!!
But since he looked over and saw that they were a little nervous perhaps, he realized in that split second that he KNEW HE had to get up FIRST and LEAD the men across that field to SHOW THEM how it had to be done!!

The incident where Moose Heyliger was shot was a situation where a lot went wrong.
First before Winters and Heyliger went out to inspect the checkpoints Winters order Lt Welsh to inform the sentries that Winters and Heyliger would be coming thru later that evening, however word never reached the sentries at this checkpoint.
Second when the soldier ordered them to halt Moose froze and for some reason he couldn't remember the password. The passwords changed from operation to operation so the codewords were no longer Flash>Thunder. In the moment all Moose could think to do was say "It's Moose", unfortunately whether it was nerves or that he could not hear him the sentry fired.
Third when Winters and Welsh were applying first aid before the medic arrived they couldn't remember how many shots of moraine they gave Moose so Doc Roe had no idea how much he could give Moose without inadvertently killing via an overdose. It is my understanding that 3 shots could be enough to cause an overdose.
Against all the odds Moose Heyliger would survive his injuries and be discharged in 1947.

Don't know if anyone else has addressed this, but the closed captioning repeatedly misspelled "sulfa" as "sulfer." Sulfa was the predominant battlefield antibiotic used in World War Two (that white powder they sprinkle on a wound). Penicillin was fairly new and in short supply back then.

While a great scene winters did not charge alone he simply out ran his men (he had been in cross country in school and been an avid runner before the war) and in own words he was so focused he didnt breathe until his first clip was spent. The YT channel operations room did an excellent job video showing the overhead view of this battle and explaining some more context like without easies counterattack the Germans could have gotten behind the rest of the battalions flank and outflanked the British in the area.
As you know friendly fire is a common thing in war and the sentry did the right thing moose didn’t respond with the right password and while in show it shown to be a new private in reality it was an experience soldier who shot moose.
Now at the end with the retreating men and why they look shaken up is well they just got out of basic and put in the Arden forest which was supposed to be a low intensity sector of the front to allow veteran units to rest and the new units to get up to speed and due to the weather and allied intelligence believing the germans didn’t have the strength to launch any major attacks most of the armies were on stand by for February to relaunch attacks into Germany. So when the germans smashed into the thin allied lines many new units did their best to stand their ground but without proper support many fled causing a bludge to appear on the allied lines forcing the Americans to redeploy the third army under Patton to stabilize the lines and drawing up any reserves in total 600,00 Americans would be committed to this battle

Thousands of Americans became prisoners and thousands died. The weather was bad for a long time….so there was no air support. @Rastafaustian Před 3 měsíci +1

I don't know for sure if this is the reason, but the area the Germans attacked through (Ardennes Forest) was considered to be an impractical route of advance, so at the time it was being guarded by some of the least trained, least experienced units in the army. This could be why those soldiers are pulling out and the 101st are taking their place.

the retreating soldiers are either from the 28th or another greener division. The 28th, and particularly the 110th infantry regiment made very heroic defense that allowed the 101st and parts 10th armored, along with other artillery and engineering battalions to group up in Bastogne. remnants of the 110th regiment became the core of team SNAFU. As you saw in episode 4. They thought the Germans were finished. Even after the failure of Market-Garden they didn't believe the Germans could mount an offensive. They made the same mistake the French and British made in 1940. They left the Ardennes lightly defended and put green troops in the line. The German spearhead were veterans Wehrmacht and SS unit with some of the latest German equipment. They overran these outnumbered and new units very easily. The Allies rushed all troops they could to plug the gap because they weren't planning on serious action until spring.

The airborne troops in WW2 were considered the best trained, (shock troops) by Army leadership. Comparable to todays special forces. Usually, they were used as "the tip of the spear" to use todays lingo. At the time of this episode, they were getting rest and relaxation behind the front lines in France. As one of the lines of dialog says, Easy still has only 60% strength, and most of that is replacements.
When the Germans broke thru the Allied lines, Eisenhower was forced to dial 911 and deploy his partial strength airborne divisions to stop the German offensive. The 101st, 82nd, and 17th were all deployed to areas around the bulge. The 101st was sent to Bastogne. Thats the title of the next episode. As others have stated, I'd suggest coats or at least a comfy sweater.

They don't name the battle going on in the first part of the episode which Winters is flashing back too in his report writing. Its the battle of the Nijmegen salient. The one where between 30th September and 8th October 1944 the Germans made a major effort to destroy the salient that Market-Garden had left in their line, at this point the 82nd and 101st remained attached to the British Army 30 Corp, Due to the allied superiority in air power and artillery all of the German attacks were smashed.
Regarding the battle between Easy and the SS they ommitted that gave the men Winter's led into battle some cover. They also ommitted an exchange of grenades between Winters and the first German he killed.. Winters grenade had a strip of tape across the arming leaver for safety which he forgot to peel off so no explosion. The SS man was so panicked that he threw a stick grenade back without even unscrewing the cap at the bottom, let alone pulling the string that armed the fuse, then Winters shot him.

Lightly defended because the French thought the Ardennes was impassable for tanks The French llost and instead of reinforcing Bastogne the kapt the Maginot line well manned. Germans, not being as stupid as the French officers, ignored the Maginot line and cut of supplies to it by taking all of Northern France and forcing the English to evacuate at Dunkirk. In 1944 the Brits and Americans thought Germany was done and had that area defended with green troops. And Germany had enough for 1 more offensive. (It would have been better used against the Russians since by mid 1945 they were mostly running west so they could surrender to the Americans and Brits.)

Combat is so odd. I can't help but weep when I think about it. I do not like crying. Crying is weakness.

I guess you don't have PTSD or TBI like some of us, who learn to live with our "weakness".

Crying is normal. The sentiment that “crying is weakness” is incredibly damaging for young boys and men. We need to be able to come to terms with what we’re feeling and parse our emotions. Crying is a part of that.

Humans developed crying literally because it helps us be stronger.

@@brooke_reiverrose2949 I don't like crying. I might take after my dad. I only saw he cry once. I think I've only publicly cried once, when I entered the Church for my dad's funeral service.
