- Did YOU hear these gaming sounds in these songs? I couldn't find anyone talking about it! Today RelaxAlax takes you through all the songs he could find that snuck a little video game easter egg into its music!
find me live over on / @alsoalax
like the music in the video? find it here / @alaxsonder - Hry
With all your sugggestions a part 2 is imminent!!! Of course, first I wanna handle the inverse - games that take/sample/steal songs! So look out for that one!
Looking forward to it Alax 👍
do you genuinely think sampling is stealing?
@@oak7741 I’m assuming thats why he separated “Sample” from “stealing”
Especially since most Artists dont usually credit where they get the original soundtrack bits from, so yeah kinda stealing.
Somebody else might have already mentioned this but BALD! by JPEGMAFIA samples Move Me from Ridge Racer Type 4. The composer of the track even acknowledged the song and loved that the track was sampled
In The Clairvoyant by Iron Maiden, the chorus sounds identical to the Onett music (from Smash Bros, not the original Earthbound ost)
I will forever hear Baby Keem faintly rapping in the back of Super Metroid's OST. I love both versions, though. Anything made with MF DOOM is a good time
I got so excited when I heard cookie chips cause I found it on spotifies DOOM radio about 2 years back and was like damn that's navi!
@@macjarman2566 love that song

Bone Thugs N Harmony also sampled from the Eternal Champions game. I remember just listening to calming snes music and my dad out of nowhere told me that was the song “Eternal”. It’s honestly really nice to hear and fits very well with the rap.
Wasn't one of the music producers also involved with the game's soundtrack? Just like Brad Buxer, who was Michael Jackson's producer and reused work on Sonic 3 for the HIStory album.

Video Game Soundbytes and Sound Effects in Music is such an epic crossover. I can hear amazing references in some songs. Game Samples are genius.
Sounds like Siivagunner
@@MustacheDLuffy Siivagunner has some based mashups.
One of my favorite cases is Janet Jackson's "China Love" sampling "Moonlit City Roa", from Legend of Mana. It's extremely blatant, especially considering it's literally the beginning of the song sped up and repeated throughout.
But the best part? The Medallion, a 2003 Jackie Chan movie, used China Love in its soundtrack... but only a very small piece, specifically _the vocal-less beginning notes that sampled Moonlit City Roa!_
And that's how Yoko Shimomura technically composed a track for a Jackie Chan movie.
Literally the best comment here thank you
I'm sure you know but "Together Again" was also either... Based off of or sampled by (not sure which was first!) one of the Sonic Game Gear games
Seems like more than just Michael influenced the music of Sonic over the years... :P
So everyone's going to start pretending that they hate Kanye's music now? Okay, sure, whatever.
Kanye make meme music bro.
"My girlfriend checked my emaaaiiilll. I sent this bitch a picture of my diiicckkk"
I agree. They do be doin that. I’m one of the few people who said he fell off after Life of Pablo. His last good album to me. Still a good producer tho.
🤨
I’m really glad that you mentioned Burial in this video, because I truly believe that he is the most talented music producer PERIOD.
The amount of varied atmospheres he can create with samples is astonishing, and his gloomy, surreal, and haunting sound will always be captivating… I just wish he put out music more often haha, I think he’s working on his next project in his series of duo aliases with The Bug.
They formed “Flame 1” and released two songs in one release, same with “Flame 2”. Can’t wait to see what they create with Flame 3
He’s a great producer for sure, but most talented? Ehhhh…
I think it's cool how you can take a topic like this and make it accessible to your audience of video gamers who probably aren't dancing with a 40 at the function (that "what's a 40" joke KILLED ME!!) But it's even cooler how much you're learning and executing on different forms of media. Your pause menu sample beat is very pretty, and I'm guessing you're the one modelling and creating the things for your game. I'm excited to play it dude. You got that multimedia talent going on but you're dedicated and have the vision to really pursue it.
Oh hi, Edbound.
We all know you would never do it, though, because the video would be instantly demonetized, and you can't be having that, can you?
It’s so cool to see my favorite creator in the wild

One of my favourite songs by the Beach Boys, "Deirdre" is sampled in both Earthbound and later on Undertale! The creepy intro of the song is used in the earthbound song "Cave of the Past" where you meet Giygas, and later on it was used in the Undertale song "Amalgam" down in Alphys secret lab!
The Deirdre sample in Earthbound was one of many things that got me to listen to the 70s era Beach Boys albums. Thanks to it, Sunflower has been one of my top favorite albums of all time
RIght?! They have no right to be as good as they are, considering how unknown they are to the mainstream. Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl & The Passions and Holland are all amazing and I'm so thankful that Toby Fox introduced me to them
Earthbound in general uses a lot of samples and musical references, mostly from the Beatles
@@kickerguy also love the sample of sgt pepper's reprise for megaton walk, such a good drum loop
love this, bro i always finding myself trying to find more videos about how producers have used video game samples over the years keep going do more!
6:31 people _like_ this? People listen to this and enjoy it?
please make more like this. love music, love video games. need more of it together
4:08 thanks for including this song! Fun fact: when making that song, I swear the engineer and I actually heard navi in the song saying “Hey!” BEFORE we ended up sampling it to put it in there. The engineer was like “That’s cool, you sampled Navi” I said “No I didn’t. Play the me the part you’re talking about.” He plays it, we both hear her yell “hey!” and I freak out. The we decided to go ahead and put her in there. It’s as if she called to us and demanded to be included lol
AYY it's Cam O'bi!
Luisa Sonzi even sampled Navi.
When navi demands u listen, u listen!
I’m so glad he sampled the song, it’s one of my favorites from the past month. It hits different while driving ngl
@@KenSTACKS literally WHO?
I used to sample from chrono trigger and secret of mana all the time. Those 16 bit bgm songs were absolute gems
Yes bro chrono trigger makes for some hard beats
he missed omarion - ice box which is also a chrono trigger sample
dude i loved this video. i feel like this video was calling my name, especially when u got to the 1:30 mark since i grew up on mike jones, project pat, slim thug, etc,but also have a passion for retro video games (i love video game osts, especially shit from the 90's like the snes & ps1) as someone who's learning how to produce music and trying to find good source material to interpolate and use as a sample, this video gives me more ideas to look into other alternative media outside of just spotify to find shit to sample
kinda funny how sonic cd japanese ost samples a lot of rap, hip hop, new jack swing and other music styles to make that unique ost... Ans now modern musicians are sampleing ost and sound effects from from videogames in a lesser extent.
This is just beautiful
sonic cd ost is all made of sample packs from the 90s (hip hop, house, rave music)
i remember when uptown funk came out and my younger brother heard it and said "hey they ripped off the Japanese sonic cd boss theme!" lol
Lesser extent gotta be a micro aggression ain’t no way
@@maismade6013 i just didn't knew how to put on words lol, I'm just saying that, at the moment, rap, hip hop, pop and other styles are samples some videogame ost or sound effects, but not as much as some games did, like Sonic CD jp/eu ost as I used as an example
I respect the ending bit. FL Studio is not easy to learn so I appreciate the dedication.
TLOP was a good album wtf
Kanye is a lyrical genius period
My favorite would probably be Logic's Welcome to Forever, which samples Persona 4's Ending Theme. A warm and touching melody with lyrics that fit really well
we hate logic
Best game of all time
@@peeneyes8011 he fallin off
Logic also has a track called Super Mario World and a Track called Lord Willin where during the chorus, you can hear Mario shouting his iconic line
Thank you for showing me this !
I would love to see more of this, but I’d also love to see the inverse, with video game soundtracks sampling songs. One of my favorite examples being “Back2Back” from Sonic Rush sampling “Haunted House of Rock” by Whodini. I love both those songs and it took me so long to figure out it was sampled.
Hideki Naganuma Alone would take up the whole video.
Man samples so much music too well.
Consider it in the works!
Don’t forget pretty much most of Earthbound’s ost
@@mechashadow True, and I swear he doesn't even stop at music
The man put beastie boys' intergalactic in jack da funk
Please do more music related videos, especially like at the end. It always helps to inspire me when I see another composer work
Almost half a million subs!! been here since you started and you deserve it!
Those Pac Man sounds in Through the Fire and Flames aren't sampled, they're done on a real guitar.
Fucking incredible.
How in the hell do you make a guitar sound like Pac-Man
One song with video game music in it I like to think of is Blackfire by DragonForce. I hear part of the main theme of Double Dragon in it.
@@samt3412 Total novice at guitar, but I think it's done by muting the strings (putting your fingers on the strings but not actually touching the wood) and rapidly sweeping across them with the pick.
@@samt3412 herman li mutes the strings while doing fast pick scrapes (at least, when i saw him play on stream)
Another more digital way is to set an lfo to reverse saw wave, set the rate fairly high, pacman sounds
that final song needs to be put on streaming services, it's too good
Some (and I mean like 1 or 2) of these were definitely reaches but this is an awesome video.
Ok… 6:49… need a full picture of that photoshop. Right now.
I hope you make a part 2 because I find this topic extremely interesting. One example of this that I'm particularly fond of is Thundercat's use of the extra continue sound from the Sega Genesis Sonic games at the end of the song "Show You The Way."
What a great ending to a very interesting video! SUBSCRIBED!
As a music and game lover this video spoke to my soul! So glad other people geek out over this stuff
Really loved this. Super high value video and plus I’m a huge hip hop head so this got me going “WHAT, REALLY?” a few times.
he’s racist
This stuff is always interesting to me. Video game music being hidden in real music and vice versa is an interesting thing. Still to this day my favorite little bit of info is Michael Jackson's influence on Sonic 3 and Knuckles' soundtrack. And on the opposite side of this video. I like when video games reference real songs. Like in Hifi Rush, the newer game. The first Boss Fight goes to a song titled "Too Big to Fail, and it's identical to Nine Inch Nails' 1,000,000 which is the song they used in the game if you play with the OST off. The beginning of the song is identical to 1,000,000.
Terms please
I love Hifi Rush
Anderson .Paak is my favorite artist and I’ve always heard that Yoshi sound in “Heart Don’t Stand a Chance”. I though I was going crazy. You don’t understand how happy I am someone else called attention to that because it is NOWHERE else on the internet.
i love how you talk over all the samples it's really helpful
I will forever remember the day my geography teacher decided to show some samples of brazilian funk in class and one of the first songs he showed us sampled the boss theme from Sonic 1
For those wondering, he was showing us a subcategory of brazilian funk known as conscientious funk, in which the artists rap about social issues they're faced with as part of a poor community. None of that gratuitously sexual BS commonly associated with brazilian funk
You remember what song it was? I'm interested in it now lol
@@augustofranklim5409 not the song but the singer. It's MC Garden
Funny that you mention the Navi "hey listen" being used so prevalently. Skrillex just sampled that voice line on his newest album like 2 weeks ago. It's the gift that keeps on giving
There's an NCS song called "Ark" by Ship Wrek & Zookeepers that also uses Navi's voice before the beat drop starts, and there's also a song by TheFatRat called "Time Lapse" that uses Yoshi's SFX (as well as the extra drums) from Super Mario World in one of the parts of the melody.
If you can afford Nintendo online for $50 a year, you can afford an air fryer.
Calling tlop subpar is insane 😭
yep
I had never even heard of this, but then about a year and a half ago my friend, who listens to a lot of rap, told me about how a song called “Love Scar” by Trippie Red sampled parts of the Crashed Frigate theme from Metroid Prime. I’m not going to pretend to know anything about rap, but at the time I thought it was really cool how such a soothing piece could be put into a genre that I know to be frantic and fast-paced
It's so nice to see that you of all people appreciate Burial's style of sampling. It's genius and really creative and the only other artist I know that is as good and as creative with sampling is DJ Shadow, who created an ENTIRE ALBUM purely from samples
It's quite probable Burial did the same thing for his Untrue album which was made using soundforge, a program which afaik only allows you to edit audio i.e. samples are the only thing you really can use. If anyone wants to know more about Burial's Untrue look for the video titled "Burial's Untrue: The making of a masterpiece" by Resident Advisor. Burial's music is almost too emotionally charged for me, even when I'm very happy some of his songs can make me feel like I have a lump in my throat, powerful stuff.
So this is very niche, but if you are into this sort of stuff, I can absolutely thoroughly recommend "Den Sorte Skole", a danish act who have also created several albums purely out of samples - plunderphonics, if you will. They make an art out of doing it, like DJ Shadow, and try to find samples from all around the world through all time periods. Their album "Lektion #3" is still one of my all-time favorites.
lovely stuff, really broadens my horizons.
3:42 yes rakakoie
Raccacoonie
Yeah man. Every time you’ve talked about music on your channel it’s been one of my favorite videos. The Mario strikers one is a personal fave
Death Grips' mixtape Exmilitary does a hell of a lot of sampling, most notably for this topic being a Combine Soldier from Half-Life 2 sampled for Thru the Walls
Can you find the Donkey Kong country sample in steroids?
Great video Alax !
6:14 I've heard Herman Li (DragonForce guitarist) say on stream that this is exactly how he describes that sound he produces on the guitar.
On the official DragonForce CZcams channel there is a video of Herman Li reacting to a Trombone Champ version of Through the Fire and the Flames. Its in that video where he calls it the Pac-Man noise.
It's likely he's made that statement before in other videos, interviews or what have you, but this is one of the most recent references that I know of.
9:07 smooth… that’s why I love you’re content. Unpredictable and funny as hell, not only that but informative as well (like, wow, haven’t heard ‘bout those songs, and thus the music gallery needs to be expanded).
Super interesting content that it was well worth the wait, I can’t wait to see it more.
this might be more of a coincidence than a group sampling from a game, but in 2006 Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are released. One year later, Green Day come out with the song "21 Guns" and some of the guitar riffs sound a bit similar to the Route 209 Day theme from that game.
Which in of itself sounds like 1976 Telephone Line by Electric Light Orchestra
Crazy how JPEGMAFIA wasn't mentioned here
Oh still tippin is a classic 🤣 this was a great video. I've been listening to hip hop, and heavy into gaming since the late 90s. I used to listen to crunkjuice by lil jon, while kicking ass in dragon arena on budokai 3 in 2004.
Alax, I want you to know this is one of my favorite videos of yours that you've done. This specific phenomenon is something I've always seen, but no one around me is obsessed enough with both videogame music and hiphop to really notice these, let alone have a conversation about it. This video felt cathartic to me, so if possible, I'd love to see more like it!
As hard as this type of content would be to get past the copyright system, this is one of the coolest types of videos I've watched in a while. Keep up the good work Alax!
"I'm gonna put f***ing yoshi in this" had me rolling, idk why 😂
Logic - Perfect is a great example of intertwining the music and game sound effects :)
One of my recent favorites is BALD by JPEGMAFIA. Samples some Ridge Racer music and he glides on it man. Does a lot of these too,he’ll just straight up sample CSGO announcer callouts or the MK announcer saying Smoke,he’s one of my favorites
Was hoping someone would mention that, quite a banger
you’re the best for mentioning the Wax Luigi’s Mansion sample in ‘Coins’. That gave me goosebumps It’s like all my favourite things coming together at once.
This reminds me of when I went to a jazz concert, and the saxophonist had a solo and played a Mario Kart lick and it made me feel amazing recognizing the reference haha
please do more i love this type o stuff
1:54 is a producers signature, just like the Street fighter “Perfect”
You can literally google this in two seconds. I’m so lost on how you have these crazy editing abilities and appreciate this nuanced stuff but dont even understand what’s going on here lmao
One of my favorite examples is really on the nose - うずまき by Machine Girl, which samples Palmtree Panic (Past) to make the song sound even more like one big mood swing. うずまき constantly switches from hyperpop to sounding like unused Earthbound music to sounding like something that could put you to sleep which makes it all the more fun to listen to. It's like what licking a battery would sound like.
also love mg1 it uses the megaman 2 ending and slows it down
I've never felt older than reading this post.
I hate people thinking that’s the original
sonic cd fans really didn't appreciate the amount of machine girl fans in their ost comment sections.
@CircuitTH i like both calm down blud 😭
I took immediate psychic damage at 7:12.
this was my favourite video of yours!
I’d be down if you did a part 2 of game samples in music. Make it a series of sorts.
Alax: "Drill... What is that?" DRILL 😭😭😭 I love Alax 2:34
Never been is by far my favorite example of sampling a video game track. Love that song!
I'm making an entire playlist out of this. Good ass video.
Love this video! Thundercat is a pretty big Sonic fan. I couldn’t give you another example off the top of my head, but I know I’ve heard more references in his music outside of Them Changes. Terrific job researching and making the topic fun and engaging whether you’re coming from a music background or video game background. “40 what?” had me dying. Great job!
bro said tlop is subpar
The sonic one caught me off guard
4:55 *Shows a Genesis Model 1
*Procceds to let the headphone port go unmentioned
The main hook of Kernkraft 400 by Zombie Nation (an incredibly popular sports anthem) was lifted from one of the few original pieces of music from a Commodore 64 game from 1984 called Lazy Jones (the track is called Stardust in the game).
The original, or the DJ Gius Remix?
I'll answer that for you: Yes.
Glad to see such a creative video from you Alax. I’d keep experimenting with these kind of ideas, they’re really fun to watch and as someone who doesn’t listen to music regularly it’s interesting to learn about these details
Damn, either CZcams is listening to my thoughts or... I was searching this topic lol. Literally was going to make a video about songs that sample games.
There were quite a few I know of that weren't mentioned here, so I'll put that in my pocket for another day.
Love the editing here! Great video- you got my sub!
Dude this video slaps 🔥
Its been years since I watched a video from you, glad to know you still make very good content!
Alax, yes, please continue talking about music and video games! Such an interesting topic! Would be fun to see you talk about how different genres have intersected with game music.
For instance, recently I've been interested in how EDM genres of the mid-late nineties (drum 'n bass, trance, house) influenced game soundtracks, like with Sonic R, Tetrisphere, Bomberman Hero, Wipeout, Rez, etc...
Calling life of pablo subpar is insane
"Rise against - the violence" grabs from the ff6 opera scene. Have a nice day.
im not sure if anybody else has said this yet, but the transitions from the samples to the songs are so good. at 6:26 that was such a good transition
"The Mind Electric" has a sample from Zelda 2 & Punch Out, and it hits hard every time I hear it
«And you give it all you got till you’re down!»
«Hahahaha»
wait is there one from Punch Out? I knew the Zelda 2 but I had no idea about the PO one!
love the MF DOOM inclusion
one of my favourites of video game samples is in Love Scars by Trippie Redd, the sample is from a metroid ost and it’s reversed and slowed down to the point that you would probably never guess that it was a sample from the game
This was excellent and a great break from your traditional content. Please make more love this Alex!
Awesome video, keep at it, the humor is on point as always and the topic was very interesting
This was an awesome video and a topic I don't give a crap about, but it's still really incredibly interesting.
Awesome video and i'd love to see more of it! As a VGM composer/cover artist watching this was pretty interesting. One topic which kinda relates to this is Janne Suni's Acidjazzed Evening which was notoriously """sampled""" (moreso stolen) by Timbaland, I think it'd be neat to see you mention it if you do another video like this.
Hey Alex, I've been watching your videos since 2014 and seeing that you're doing well and making videos again makes me happy. This topic definitely is interesting as I didn't think there were a lot of video game-related things in some songs. Keep up the great work!
3:33 God damn this video feels so personal, I love rap/rnb and I pretty much knew all of these, it was really exciting to see someone else notice them. (I would have another one, tho it's not a sample and just uses a similar sound, the song "closed on sunday" has doot doos that always make me think of mario sunshines soundtrack.)
Another old Wiz song that sampled a game is Ms Rightfernow, has Green Hill from Sonic 1 in it
AlsoD Drake has another song that samples off of the Sonic 06 soundtrack
dude the wax reference. love it lol
Honestly do more of these, it’s so cool seeing these connections
An honorable mention would be the no pressure intro by logic, not for sampling a soundbyte from a game, but for straight up hiring david hayter to reprise his role as solid snake and read out a few lines
I hear you’re planning world domination through a new form of metal gear. Well listen to me it won’t work
too bad logic is shitty music for racist white boys
we hate logic
Good catch on. Camron’s joint… also… She Will ?!! That’s such a dope sample
R&B singer Avant sampled Symphony of the Night
The song is called "Exclusive"
1:00 the beat hard af regardless
Really fascinating video, glad to see somebody cover this topic as it's always been a point of interest to me. I actually have an addition: "Jokes End" from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is used as a sample in XXTENTACION's "came2kill". I'm not familiar with his music but I heard this track playing a couple months ago and immediatly recognized the sample. Whoever was producing for XXTENTACION at the time had great game taste I guess.
ALAX THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THAT COOKIE CHIPS FT DOOM TRACK I LOVE THAT
Wow you know alot about music and games, very nice 👍
