Hi yes can - you just need spacers that fit between the base and the headboard so the headboard is far enough away from the base it wont catch as the mattress is lifted up.
Yes each end of the base will have bolt holes under the fabric so you can choose - its helpful if you have storage drawers in the base and want to choose which side they open from

Have you felt beneath the fabric? if its a divan base the holes will be there, try running your finger across the fabric until you locate them
